Darling Star
Featuring Joe Popp (vocals, guitars) and Tylor Durand (guitars). This song began with some chord progressions played on acoustic guitar over a simple drumbeat. That's what I presented Joe and Tylor when they arrived at my Brooklyn studio one day in March 2014. Very quickly, Joe came up with the melody for the verses and chorus. After a brief perusal through my journal, we came up with some lyrics. We recorded vocals first. Electric guitar (via a Fender Maurader played through Positive Grid's Bias Amp Modeller iOS app) was added next. Over the next several weeks, I worked out the arrangement and added additional layers of analog synths, bass, guitars, percussion and drums. When it came time for the video, I turned to some iPhone footage I'd shot one afternoon in White Sands, New Mexico. It was an extremely hot day - so hot that the iPhone kept giving me the message: "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it."
Surrender To The Moment
My new single, “Surrender To The Moment,” coming soon. Featuring Miguelito LaMorte on vocals.
A La Playa
The very first song I wrote and produced. It was recorded on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder back in 2000. The timing is off, the levels are all over the place and the instruments and voice fall in and out of tune. This is the very definition of lo-fi. Despite the shoddy production and performance, it resonated among friends and family at the time. With their support firmly in place, I kept going. This represents the birth of enstereo and the avant-barrio sound.
The Other World
This track, featuring Tylor Durand (guitar), Nick Harbaugh (vocals) and Joe Popp (guitar, vocals), began on my iPhone with the help of an app called Chordbot, which spits out chord progressions. After finding one I liked, I played it on the piano. From there I built it up with bass, drums, guitars and all kinds of sound textures courtesy of my Prophet 08 analog synth. I also recorded some verses and chorus. A couple of years later, I invited Nick over to my studio - I'd sent him the instrumental version beforehand - where he arrived with his own idea for verses and chorus. I never played him my vocal. Several months later, I had Joe sing my parts. I never played him what Nick had done. Joe and Nick never met, but their voices did come together on this track.
