So, I saw this post on my dash where it pretty much looked like Spock and Bones were having an entire conversation with just their eyebrows and I thought "What if they really did that, though." What if for a long period of time on the Enterprise they spent a lot of time together, just the two of them, in the labs working on a cure for some of McCoy's patients, maybe, and they found words to distract from their work most of the time. So they actually developed a well thought out system of phrases
((cont)) and basics sentences and such by raising and lowering their eyebrows various degrees. 45°'s raise from the usual resting place of the right eyebrow meant "Did you get that, Spock?" and the same raise for Spock meant "Indeed, Doctor" or asked the same question. A 45° raise of the left eyebrow from it's usual resting place meant "Dammit, you pointy eared hobgoblin! Shut up!" And that same raise for Spock meant "Doctor McCoy, my mouth is closed. I cannot 'shut up' as you put it, as I am not verbally speaking." (Well, they never actually sorted that one out officially, but they can read each other's facial expressions pretty well at this point.) And of course this becomes incredibly useful on away missions and the like when things need to be said but silently, without drawing attention of others. Also very useful for silent arguments fought on the bridge when neither of the two wish to disrupt the other crewmen's concentration, but still wanna spar it out.
imagine spock and bones believing that theyre being really subtle and quiet about it but sometimes jim catches them
imagine jim covering his mouth with his hand, trying not to laugh because his blueshirts are literally staring into each other’s eyes and making ridiculous facial expressions at each other and it is the cutest thing
