(he’s winking at Serena here)
Broke take: Arc V is about an interdimensional war.
Woke take: Arc V is about Dennis playing a game with himself to see how many counterparts he can seduce.
I was involved in the YuGiOh Rare Pair Mini Bang, and was fortuitously giving the chance to pinch hit for SparkleSpritz's "To live another life with you would be nice, so I'll do it in this one" which features Dennis/Yuya~! My love for both characters is well known and getting to put them together? Excellent. I was unable to read the entire story because of the rating, but the dynamic of, 'oops, it turns out despite my scheming intent, you are delightful and I have Feeling for you' is one I really enjoy~
Great times all around~!
For the mini fic prompts, either 3 or 20 with Dennis and Yuya, if you want? Thank you ✩
03: things you said too quietly
Red eyeshadow looks dazzling around Yuuya's eyes, Dennis thinks. It makes his green irises pop, makes his soft skin fiery and warm. It accentuates the deep red blush on the apples of his cheeks and the strong outline of lipstick around his puckered lips. Naturally, the serious effect is ruined by Yuuya pulling faces in the mirror at him, practicing his smiles and laughs and silly expressions for the crowd eagerly awaiting him.
"Say," Yuuya says, tilting his head back, "what about this expression?" Eyes pop, cheeks dimple. When Yuuya smiles, the world grows a little brighter, a little healthier, a little warmer.
Dennis tucks his hand round Yuuya's cheek and brings his head down and centred. "I think," he says, rolling the words off his pinched tongue, "that it's impossible to do your stage makeup with that expression."
A pink tongue pokes out between Yuuya's cherry-red lips. "Hard mode."
"Expert mode." Unconsciously, his fingers move down to Yuuya's collar to adjust his flamboyant attire—a bright, clown-like suit with a patchwork of every gaudy patterned fabric under the sun. Only Yuuya could wear such a costume with pride, and the button-up top and parachute pants make him look like a soft, huggable teddy bear. It takes all his willpower not to embrace Yuuya in the moment and swing him around the cramped dressing room, ruining the hour and a half he's already spent fixing his hair and applying his stage makeup.
Instead, he settles for a firm squeeze on the shoulders.
"One minute to go."
"You're always on time," Yuuya says. He kicks his heels against the ground, spinning the chair round so now he's facing Dennis, gaudy attire on full display. He leans forward, but Dennis brings a hand out to slow him.
"I love you, but you're going to ruin your makeup."
"Would be worth it."
Quickly, Dennis pecks him on the cheeks; blush-dust coats his lips. "And ruin my handiwork? I'll save it for after the show."
At the mention of the show, the crowd erupts with cheers and applauses. The dressing room door bursts open and a stage attendant decked in wires, headsets, and microphones comes running in. "Mr. Sakaki, it's time."
"Show time," Yuuya says. He leaps off the chair, throwing himself backwards, up and over, twirling in the air like a graceful dancer. Dennis leans back so as not to be kicked by Yuuya's flying feet. He lands gracefully in the middle of the room, throwing out an arm in preparation for a deep bow. In the bright lights, Yuuya sparkles. Glows.
"Good luck," Dennis says.
And then the attendant is hurrying him out of the room else he miss his stage cue. Dennis watches him go, walk down the length of mirrors lined round the dressing room. The attendant passes through the door first; he has places to be, people to find, work to do. Yuuya has to go to, but at the final step, he slows, and through the mirror's reflection Dennis sees the facade crack. The entertainer breaks one chip and crack at a time, until he's a fragment of himself standing on the precipice of joy and sorrow. One more performance, one more laugh. How many performances can he keep doing, how many laughs does he have left in him?
You don't have to go alone, he wants to say. He even thinks he says it sometimes, in a voice so quiet and weak that Yuuya would never hear him.
In the blink of an eye, Yuuya puts himself back together, fills the chips in his soul. He marches through the door, head held high, parachute pants fluttering with whip-whip sounds that follow him down the corridors leading to the stage. Dennis stays in the room, arms hanging at either side. His eyeliner pen hangs limply in his fingers.
"You don't have to go alone."
But the roar of the crowd, the vigour of the audience's cheers, drown out his weak words.

Arc V Rare Pair Week Day 4: Monsters
Dennis usually feels safe in Heartland. Sometimes, though, people don't want to let go of what he did.
Entertainmentship
While both thought the other was good-looking, Dennis only got a crush on Yuya after episode 144
Ever since watching him card himself, Yusho had wanted to watch over him a bit more, so often Dennis came over to the Sakaki house and was already like a son in-law
Both of them teach at their branch of the You Show school and are fiercely proud of their students
Yuya was the one to ask Dennis out on a date first
One day he asks him about the self-carding and the two of them had a long in-depth conversation about their own issues with mental health
This one’s pretty short, so I’m not going to bother publishing it on AO3, but here’s some entertainmentshipping for Arc V rarepair week, Day 1 Prompt Applause.
Dennis had dueled many times in his…career. Win or lose, it didn’t matter as long as it was all part of the act. It was the part he took the most pleasure in, the role of entertainer.
And yet.
He always knew that the role he had to play was the villain.
That was what he was, underneath. The entertainer act was a con. A trick. He couldn’t truly enjoy it, he always had to have a dispassionate internal response towards the audience that he duped. And so every duel left him restless and unsatisfied. Every ring of applause felt hollow. But that was fine. All that mattered was the act.
Until Yuuya tore that all down.
Tore apart the real act, the one Dennis played on himself. Showed him that the entertainer act wasn’t the con, the villain act was.
Yuuya was too good for him.
That didn’t stop Dennis from falling in love all the same. How could he not? Dennis had betrayed Yuuya; Yuuya had forgiven him. No, he’d gone further than that. He’d seen past everything and torn past every defense to pull Dennis out of that misery. He’d reached out to help Dennis when Dennis refused every offer. Yuuya had saved Dennis and gave him the chance of redemption.
And on top of all of that…he’d somehow convinced Dennis that he deserved that chance.
He still wasn’t convinced he deserved Yuuya, though.
No…he knew he didn’t.
But, as their duel concluded, as Yuuya smiled at him, as sparkles rained down from the sky…the audience, surrounding them in the ruins, clapped.
And for the first time, it didn’t ring hollow.
34. “Those things you said yesterday… Did you mean them?” Entertainmentshipping go!
((heres this thing i pulled from my ass. warning for a little bit of suicide mention and implied suicidal thoughts cause,,,, i cant not help but write angst. set in some kind of post canon))
“I’ve been thinking about it at lot lately...” Dennis murmurs into the night air.
Yuuya shifts beside him, but doesn’t ask what he means. Doesn’t need to. By now he’s heard of what happened in the Fusion Dimension. Of what he did after losing that duel against Kaito.
“Is it...” he swallows and tries again, “is it bad that I liked it? The peaceful oblivion of it. How... everything was just silent for once.”
They are watching some children play in the park below them as they sit on rubble steps. A different time, Yuuya might have commented on how happy they all looked now that the war and fear that came with it was over and done with. They are now free to duel for fun rather than for their lives and at any other time his heart would be filled with warmth at the sight.
Yet now is not the time to feel warmth when the one sitting next to him is filled with so much sorrow.
He doesn’t quite know where to start, so he begins with a quiet, “it’s not bad.”
“It’s not?”
“No.” Yuuya leans back to watch the stars twinkle against the darkness of the sky. “Sometimes I want the same thing...” - a small pause - “silence.”
Dennis makes a broken noise from the back of his throat. The next moment finds them leaning against each other as the streetlights that still work begin to flicker on.
“I think I deserve it-”
“No. No one deserves it, Dennis.”
“But I-”
Yuuya turns so he can hold the other’s face with both hands without straining his back muscles too much. “Listen to me. No one deserves that, Dennis. Do you hear me? No one.” He pushes his forehead against Dennis’ for emphasis. “And you don’t deserve it, either. Yes, you may have done things in the past. Things you regret. The fact that you regret them at all is a sign that you’ve grown. No one deserves that. But everyone deserves a second chance. Do you understand me?”
It takes a moment, but Dennis nods eventually. Yuuya only lets go when he’s sure that he means it.
The tears in both their eyes goes unnoticed by the children in the park, along with the rest of what is left of Heartland City.
“Yuuya...?”
He hums from beside him. The stars are fainter that day, though the sight is welcoming. It means Heartland is slowly regaining the life it had lost, stealing the light from above to illuminate the streets below.
“Those things you said yesterday… Did you mean them?”
Yuuya reaches the space between them to grip Dennis’ hand and give it a light squeeze. “Every word.”
If he hears a hitch in Dennis’ breath, he doesn’t make it known.
They spend the rest of the evening stargazing with Yuuya’s hand in Dennis’ clutch like a lifeline.
