If I can recommend a book for people to read, I’d like to recommend OCEAN by David Attenborough and Colin Butfield. This book is full of amazing information about the ocean, but also about the ways ocean environments have been affected by environmental change. However, the book also consistently demonstrates how ocean environments have an amazing ability to recover if we simply let them. I find it a highly motivational hope-inspiring read.
i think mental health is vital for environmentalism. so many people get distressed and fall into despair regarding environmental news; sometimes this motivates them to work harder, but i think that mostly this results in people losing hope and giving up. That is understandable. However if we're able to approach environmental issues with a positive outlook, finding good news along with the bad so we dont get emotionally burnt out, i think thats very important. That's why i wanted to make this blog.
And the truth is? There is hope. and thats why we'll keep on fighting.
Something to think about with regard to “I can’t make a difference by buying eco friendly products bc I don’t have the money to afford it”, according to this book I’m reading, “Who Cares Wins” by Lily Cole, it’s the wealthier people who have the biggest impact on the environment. So, if you truly can’t afford to buy more ethically, chances are *you’re not the problem*
My thoughts then turn to, the best way to do environmental activism if you’re poor is, to share resources with and try to convince wealthier people than yourself to choose more eco friendly options.
I know that’s easier said than done, but to a degree, it is possible
There’s this post I will share in the reblogs, but basically it’s recounting an experience of joining a Facebook group for right wing Christian’s, and learning how they talk about things. Thru learning this, the person was able to convince these people of the poster’s more left wing views, just by using the kind of language they used
This is something I personally believe in a lot. The idea that if you can learn the right way of phrasing things, you can actually convince more people than you’d think to change their views
i think the important thing about these books im reading is that, while the climate breakdown is going to happen. its still survivable. this is not the end of the world. thats really what inspired me to repurpose this blog and start using it again. before, id been uncertain of what our future actually was, whether we had one at all. but these books have made me realise that yes, we do have a future. so long as we fight for it. and thats made me very inspired to do more envionmentalism, this time with a positive mindset, rather than a distressed one as i used to do. and i want to spread that with others
