An older commission, but still one of my favorites. Illayda from the Burning Stars book series, commissioned by @rurikredwolf. I highly recommend the series so please consider checking it out!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
The inimitable @norwegianpornfaerie turned me on to the Mass Effect trilogy (I’m still on ME3, no spoilers!). The character of Tali has been one I’ve been finding very intriguing, as someone in an area where SARS-CoV2 is not under control, and is looking at a year or more of no contact. Hence this little vignette.
[FASHION] Necessity Meets Luxury In Designer Envirosuits
via In View Five years have gone by. There is firm ground under our feet, Tikkun shines in our eyes and gone is the perpetual hum of myriad life-support systems tethering us to the horrors of cold, airless spaceships. It’s about time we began to look like respectable citizens of the galaxy. Fortunately, change is making its way into our midst. Jares'Iksam and his Bureau Iksam in Imija is one pioneer of reborn quarian fashion, having made our envirosuits reflect the immense value they give to us. He spoke to us about his work and future plans in this exclusive interview: "I'm not pretending to be the inventor of the omni-tool, first of all. I dare say we all did something little to our suits on the Flotilla; repairs, something unique to tell ourselves apart from our peers. The largest limit there was scarcity. That was the bottleneck between necessary and comfort additions. Our hoods got past that because they helped keep the cabling connecting the helmets to the suits from snagging, I think. But it came to an end. That first year on Rannoch was wild, with everyone capable of tailoring and suit-fixing starting their own business. Most of them faded away after they ran visor first into reality of trying to run an enterprise with little experience prior...but not me. I got past that hurdle, and took a few aspiring textile artists onboard my 'ship'. Back then it wasn't a Bureau, I was just fixing envirosuits up like I used to on the Flotilla. "We didn't move into full-time fashionista immediately. It was after we got a textile mill back into operation and bought salvaged fashion catalogs to use as a basis. I and my co-workers took on from there, offering new hood and cloak designs, different patterns and cuts. Then we expanded towards new clothing articles that could be worn over the suit. Sleeves, vests, coats. Everyday articles for any other species, but finally in size and shape designed only for us. Easy to slip over ourselves now, but it’s groundwork for those days when envirosuit becomes a choice between other clothing." Bureau Iksam is soon to be celebrating its third anniversary and has special plans for the occasion. Jares and his artisan colleagues are preparing to unveil a series of suits named 'Reverence' in honor of that milestone. "Our third anniversary project is going to be huge. 'Reverence' will be a line of made-to-fit custom envirosuits, with form standing on same line with function. Fashion will mark 'Reverence's release as watershed moment, dividing our looks in pre and post!" The veracity of Jares'Iksam's claims will be tested in two months, with the approach of the anniversary. Until then, we have only his words and scarce pictures of the new line to tide us over.
