#Envision2030
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW!!!
Over 1 billion people live with some form of disability and that was approximately 15% of the world's population. This includes 93 million children and 720 million adults with significant difficulties in functioning. (World Health Organization, 2020)
With appropriate services and support, persons with disabilities can participate in society as much as anyone else. However, 40% of people with disabilities are not receiving the assistance they needed. (World Health Organization, 2020)
People with disability are often stigmatized and discriminated that leads them to be deprived in work opportunities, access in education and be excluded in the society.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs is a collaborative project leading different countries, local and international communities towards the accomplishment of inclusive development. It promotes holistic plans that guarantees the involvement of persons with disabilities and other disadvantage groups upon the fulfillment of the development goals. (World Health Organization, 2019)
Disability is referenced in various parts of the SDGs (Goal 4, 8, 10, 11, 17) and most of it are associated to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and monitoring of the SDGs. (UN DESA, 2015)
Persons with disabilities are an integral part of society. Only through inclusivity, we can achieve our goals collectively. What makes them different is not their condition, but the stigma that they are “disabled” with which excluded them from the opportunities that they greatly deserve and capable of doing.
Here are 8 vision response household action plan to foster and promote inclusivity towards people with disabilities:
When you have the opportunity to meet them, smile and have the initiative to offer help when necessary.
Eradicate barriers by addressing them as “persons with disability” and not disabled.
Advocate people to speak out against stigma and discrimination through conversations and social media platforms.
Respect people with disabilities through thought, word, and deed.
Enable them to feel accepted by genuinely acknowledging them.
Observe if they needed assistance, or better yet ask them if they needed help, so they will not be offended if you suddenly give aid.
Negate stereotypes by informing people how persons with disabilities are capable with given support.
Encourage family members to embrace inclusivity by informing them of what they can do to contribute to its fulfillment.
