Giuliana la balena scoperta nel 2006 sulle sponde del Lago di San Giuliano (Matera), da cui prende il nome, è il più grande cetaceo del Pleistocene mai scoperto. Animale onirico e ancestrale, ha solcato per milioni di anni i mari della terra ispirando poeti e artisti di ogni secolo, dalla Bibbia fino al Moby Dick di Melville; nel ventre della balena albergano i personaggi del nostro immaginario come Giona, Pinocchio, il Barone di Münchhausen, il Soldatino di Piombo. La balena vive nei quadri tempestosi di William Turner e nelle fiabe persiane delle Mille e una notte, dove Sinbad il marinaio approda su un'isola, che si rivela la parte emersa di una monumentale balena. Giuliana diventa simbolo creativo del Matera Film Festival incarnando, fin dalle origini della civiltà, quanto di più propriamente letterario e cinematografico possa esistere: il divino, il mistero, la sfida, la vendetta, il superamento dell’ essere umano, l’avventura.

The image of a whale, Giuliana, which will be the emblem of the awarding statuette given to the winners of the festival (MFF Long, MFF Doc, MFF Short, Best Italian First Feature, Lifetime Achievement Award) was chosen as the symbol of the festival. Giuliana the whale discovered in 2006 on the shores of Lake San Giuliano (Matera), from which it takes its name, is the largest Pleistocene cetacean ever discovered. Dreamlike and ancestral animal, it has sailed for millions of years and seas of the earth inspiring poets and artists of every century, from the Bible up to Moby Dick of Melville; in the belly of the whale there are the characters of our imagination such as Jonah, Pinocchio, the Baron of Münchhausen, the Lead Soldier. The whale lives in the stormy paintings of William Turner and in the Persian fairy tales of the Thousand and One Nights, where Sinbad the sailor lands on an island, which turns out to be the emerged part of a monumental whale. Giuliana becomes a creative symbol of the Matera Film Festival, embodying, since the origins of civilization, what most literary and cinematographic could exist: the divine, the mystery, the challenge, revenge, the overcoming of the human being, the adventure.
