The Eoarchean era kicked off the Archean Eon around 4 billion years ago. Just before the end of the Hadean, an event known as the Late Heavy Bombardment began and lasted well into the Eoarchean. The Earth was pummeled by space rocks and comets. Comets, if you don't know, are typically balls of ice flying through space. So after these snowballs slam into the surface, they would melt and contribute to our planet's water supply. Volcanism was still rampant and celestial impacts calmed down as the moon slowly drifted away. Soon the very first signs of life would appear.
