The World Economic Forum recently announced its 2016 class of Young Global Leaders - people under the age of 40 who are changing the world - and 24 of the 121 are American. This year's Young Global Leaders class includes leaders from an array of backgrounds.

DECEMBER 6 - NINA TANDON

Nina Tandon, CEO and cofounder of EpiBone, is revolutionizing medicine. Her company is the first in the world to use a patient’s stem cells to grow human bone that can then be used to repair bone defects like bone loss.

Ideally, these bones can be grown to the exact shape and size needed and are easily implanted into the body because they are made from the patient’s own cells. Tandon was named a TED senior fellow last year and she's also one of Business Insider’s “40 under 40: People to watch in 2015.”

On the brink of entering human trials, a new bone transplant technology could dramatically reduce the risks of today that are involved with the procedure. Instead of using a donor or cadaver, EpiBone encourage patients to grow their own replacement bone. A cow bone is milled down to the exact size and shape required for the transplants, and once ‘seeded’ with the patient’s stem cells, will eventually grow a replica of the patient’s bone.
