The wait is over - Deskem's "Mutated EP" has arrived and marks a cornerstone in the young German producer's career. Suspenseful atmospheres and stripped-down, groove-oriented beats and basslines define the signature Deskem sound, we're talking epic, goosebumps-inducing breakdowns and fierce, growling midbass acrobatics over bare and militant beat structures finely accentuated by copious amounts of subbass. Title track "Mutated" utilizes these signature Deskem sound elements but adds hip-hop style vocal jabs into the mix to compliment the groove and to jack up the overall wonk factor. "Mutated VIP" takes the solid foundation of the original, pimps out the drums and mid-basslines and streamlines the whole thing to provide a nice upgrade option. "Ancient World" is pure atmosphere - cinematic sound effects meet exotic, mid-eastern leads and build up to a gigantic halfstep drop featuring a filtered, hovering, self-modulating bassline - vibes-a-plenty inside! On "Incubus", we bring in badman Bukez Finezt for collab duties, and the duo manages to keep things reduced and tidy, maintaining focus on their absolutely mindbending bassline modulation antics. No more is needed, the result is a minimal party stomper of the highest order! Meanwhile, "Sunshine" utilizes ominous choir pads and an explicit voice sample to usher in what can only be described as the ultimate head-bobber, an infectious midbass plodder that again demonstrates Deskem's keen ability to produce great sonic impact with a greatly reduced and refined palette of sounds. Electronic virtuoso ILL_K steps up for the "Sunshine Remix" and turns the original template into a dark, unsettling, no-compromise tech stepper by keying in on the tune's vital atmospheric components and recycling them with a more dubbed-out, industrial touch. Quality from start to finish, Deskem's "Mutated EP" is chock-full with dancefloor-killing, mind-melting and technically advanced sonic weaponry. This is no cookie-cutter Dubstep, Deskem brings original militant vibes and convincingly displays his knack for groove, musicality, and gritsy bass combobulation. In other words, it's the ill sh*t!
