Coalition Broadcasting Corporation (aka Coalition) - Fish

CBC’S 1983 “Untied Shoelaces Are (Still) Dangerous” C30 was recently co-reissued digitally and on cassette by Epic Sweep and Lingering Sound. Done so through the latter’s website, which mostly specializes in New Zealand music, with the occasional international record thrown in. All orders run through Paypal.

“The Coalition Broadcasting Corporation (Coalition) formed in Auckland in the early 1980s from the ashes of the Herco Pilots. It became a broader more chaotic collective including Chris Todd, Peter Williams, Chris Williams, Steve Webster, Hugo Tercel, Steve Canning, Caroline Sommerville and Kristen Rowe who 'all played everything but not always at the same time BUT something's more than once! Coalition released a cassette called 'Shoelaces Are...Dangerous' in 1983. According to the sleeve it was made up of 'material gleamed from numerous cassettes, 2 track and 4 track recording installations”

The album was reviewed by Chris Knox in 'Rip It Up', so I don’t have to bother:

“...Meanwhile out of Mt Eden (remember Under the Mountain) comes the slug-like Coalition, leaving a musical trail of purest silver. Well, mostly pure – 75 per cent silver, 20 per cent base metals and five percent sludge but folks! Forty-two songs! And only one cover version! Remarkable! Admirable! There's some magic stuff on this and recording quality veers from 'Abysmal Plus' to 'Shimmering Hi Fi'. Slime with worms..."

Also worth checking out is the three Mary Briefcase cassettes (two remastered reissues from the early 80s and an album of brand new material) that Epic Sweep also put out: Jupiter by Ridge (1980) / Whisper of the Sheba Dawn (1982) / Page Thirty Nine: The Fickle Nest Project (2015). You can get all three in a bundle (way cheaper per tape) or individually.

The COOLIES Punk Is Bread 7” ep (Epic Sweep, NZ - 2014)

Have not heard anything this recklessly wired and of its own universe since what, Slay Tracks: 1933-1969? That can’t possibly be true, but all the same, this is completely tilted.  Epic Sweep does it again.

I got in touch with Teneti at Epic Sweep last week to grab the new mind-scramble of a 7" by the Coolies (stream it), and thought I'd grab something else to make the shipping costs worthwhile. Turns out not much is in stock, but he still had the 10" lathe by Piece War, which features 1/2 of the Coolies. Piece War is a much different breed than the Coolies; instead of aggressively lo-fi clangor, we get very sharp, catchy garage-punk that feels like it was all recorded in an afternoon. This tossed-off vibe works for the two ladies in Piece War, as they lace their sugar with small sharp scraps of steel leftover from small arms manufacturers. Song titles like "Dead Bodies," "Ice Is Melting" and "Darkness" keep the record from becoming summertime fodder (hey, it's winter down there now). The warped guitar line in the middle of "Monster" lands just this side of ominous; "We Are at War" (above) smacks you with the desperate shouted chorus of "Nothing, nothing/I am nothing/I'm here," all of it coming across like an attempt to overcome the album title's namesake. The whole of Apathy cuts pretty deep, correctly nailing the feeling of frustration involved with being an overconnected, hyper-aware individual with no real authority. Let Piece War help you off the couch and just, like, not be an asshole, OK?

I found this on youtube and thought it was freaking awesome! Go check this guys channel he has some really cool sweeps including a Shedinja, Ditto and Rattatta sweep.
