The study done in Sweden over the last 20 years shows that about 50% of adults and children were seizure-free after the surgery. After 10 seizure-free years, 40% of adults and 80% of children were able to stop taking medication. Doctors recommend epilepsy patients to get treated with surgeries if they are resistant to epileptic drugs. Also, patients without clear kidney failure can especially benefit from palliative epilepsy surgery. While some people think the surgery will bring negative effects, the risk of preoperative complications is relatively low in epileptic surgery. Although it is true that some negative effects are expected, they are not regarded as complications. Children may experience a certain motor deterioration after hemispherotomy, but they have the ability to maintain it. About one third of patients with epilepsy do not become seizure-free despite medication.
