ME SINTO EPILOGO - Lucas Moraes
Epilogos Research Paper
This is my final research paper for my Intro to Cultural Anthropology class. I wrote it about my time in the field during trip to San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador in August 2010. I hope you enjoy it!
A Critical Study of Longitudinal Research Conducted and Projects Accomplished by Epilogos in the Community of San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador
Cultural Anthropology Research Paper
For my Cultural Anthropology course, one of the final assignments is to construct a research paper on a topic of my choice. I had to write a prospectus, or proposal for my topic. Im choosing to write my paper based off of my experience in the "field" in San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador from a few years ago. I will be using my "field notes," research, and the research of Epilogos (the company I volunteered for). I will also be conducting interviews to obtain research and sites for my research paper.
Prospectus
Longitudinal research is the long term study of region, community, society, and culture devoted to a specific project in a specific location….
I will write a research essay addressing the longitudinal research of the community of San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador. This essay will specifically focus on the longitudinal research that the organization Epilogos has done as well as the projects they have worked on to help improve the standard of living of the community. This includes the creation of clean water filtration systems and other environmental endeavors, the establishment of academic and religious institutions, the construction of houses, and sponsoring of education.
Journal Entry from August 2010 - El Salvador
This was a brief excerpt from one of my journals that I recorded in August 2010 during my trip. I turned this journal entry into my college essay. You can find the picture of Maria in the wheelchair below this post.
Driving on this ugly, decrepit, dirt road was impossible. We began walking, and I saw a wooden structure that was supposed to be a fence that wrapped around what looked like a hut. It was actually a house with a dirt floor, no electricity, and no running water. A woman stumbled out of the house, followed by a girl, Maria, no more than five years old. The little girl was paralyzed from the waist down; she was boney and looked extremely malnourished. She was in a wheelchair, and she struggled to wheel herself out of her house. The back of her wheelchair revealed that it was sponsored by a Canadian organization. Maria repeatedly thanked us, even though none of us directly gave her the gift.
I met this girl a few years ago in San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador. I traveled there with the president of a non-profit organization called Epilogos. Epilogos sponsors poor students so that they can go to school, it helps to institute higher education, brings technology to schools and hospitals, builds houses and churches, and brings electricity, running water, and water filters to families who do not have them.
While volunteering in El Salvador, I taught English to Spanish speaking children without knowing Spanish myself. I learned a lot about the way people live and work by visiting them and seeing the types of projects Epilogos completed. I realized how different and challenging life in a third world country is for children and adults, and I was appalled to see the truth of a life that I did not know existed. These so called “homes” consisted of dirt floors, a few blankets piled on top of wooden slats for beds, and scrap pieces of metal laid on top of each other for roofs. Unfiltered and unsanitary river water was used for bathing, and for washing dishes and clothes. These impoverished people did not have the money to even buy the food that was needed for their families. The children were malnourished and unhealthy. I had never seen such hazardous and inhumane living conditions.
Obtaining an education in Communications will give me the skills necessary to help countries improve their standards of living. I hope to better understand the problems occurring in places like El Salvador so that I may then explore sustainable solutions for those problems. I also want to become fluent in French and Spanish so that I will be able to communicate more efficiently with people in different countries through their native languages.
I’m not sure exactly where I will go or whom I will be helping, but I know that I want to use my talents and my passion to make a difference for those who cannot help themselves. My experience with Maria, and the wheelchair that changed her life, has encouraged me to pursue a career dedicated to positively impacting the lives of others. I know I cannot solve world hunger or create world peace, but I have realized how easily I can change one person’s world forever.
El Salvador & Epilogos
A little over 4 years ago, in August of 2010, I traveled to El Salvador. My trip was a week long, and in just one week my life was changed. This trip was something that I would not have expected myself to take until a few months before I actually went. I first found out about the trip through a woman who was a member of the temple that I belonged to. Her name was Terry and all I knew about her was that she was one of my mom's friends and thirty-some years older than me. She was and still is the president of an organization called Epilogos. In Spanish, Epilogos means epilogues. The name however does not have much to do with actual epilogues. Terry made a few presentations at the temple explaining what Epilogos does as an organization.
Epilogos's mission "is to improve the lives of the impoverished people in the town of San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador by engaging in community development. For Epilogos, community development means improving the quality of life in many areas, including health, education, housing, employment, water issues, energy, and public sanitation. Epilogos is a non-profit organization supported entirely by donations."
Epilogos is recognized and supported by many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity of El Salvador, ADESCOJ (a local community development organization), the school administrations and municipal government of San Jose Villanueva, many faith-based communities and churches, Engineers Without Borders from many universities, health professionals from many different states in the U.S., and Rotary Clubs from many countries.
--- (above info taken from & found at www.epilogos.org) ---
When I discovered Epilogos from Terry and learned much moire about their missions and cause, I wanted to help. I wanted to jump on board with the program. Since helping people is a large goal of Epilogos, I wanted to help people in the town of San Jose Villanueva and pledge to making a difference int heir community in whatever way I could.
When my parents agreed to letting me go on the trip with Terry for just under a week, I was extremely excited. I was a little nervous to be traveling outside the country for my first time and to a part of the world I knew next to nothing about. I was taking French in High School at the time and I had not taken Spanish since elementary school.
During my 6 days, I traveled through the town of San Jose Villanueva and the capital, San Salvador. I was extremely busy shadowing Terry and learning all about what Epilogos did. I saw many of the projects that the company was working on at the time. I saw clean water filter projects, churches and homes that were being built, and I visited a school where I helped a computer teacher and his kids in a classroom for a few hours. Since the computers were donated by American companies, the languages of the computers had to be switched from English to Spanish.
I visited impoverished parts of the country as well as parts of the country that were thriving. It was heartbreaking to see the impoverished communities to say the least. Most houses in El Salvador did not have electricity or running water, and only a little more than half had functioning roofs. I spent my week visiting these communities and learning much about the standard of living in the country. It was an eye opening experience and it made me appreciate everything I have and everything that Americans take for granted to much more.
I also met many amazing people. I met some extremely kind and adorable children, families, and the Epilogos staff who I still often think about. I met Mike and Susie (the founders of Epilogos), Graciella (the program coordinator), and Gabby. Gabby was terry's sponsored student who she sponsored for many years to attend school in El Salvador. When I first met Gabby years ago, I did not think that I would see her again anytime soon. I have gotten to see her 3 times since my trip, about once each year. She ended up taking classes at a college in New York and is doing well.
I did keep journals during my trip, but I don't have them with me. I am hoping to find them soon and see what I wrote about over 4 years ago....
Ever since my trip to El Salvador, I have been more focused on service. I value community service and doing things for others; I always have. There is something different about traveling to a foreign country and learning its culture and way of life, while helping to improve the country's standard of living. I only got a small taste of this through my trip to El Salvador, but I hope to return to San Jose Villanueva again, as well as to travel to more developing countries.....
