tell me, rose, how did teen buck feel when tommy first got a beard girlfriend? or when he first realized people were attracted to tommy?

ah mimi, taking advantage of insider information (the knowledge that this is on my mind 24/7) to get me to ramble... well it worked lol 🩷

oh teen buck, he of latent bisexuality and the biggest crush in the world. he never meets tommy's girlfriend but maddie mentions her once - buck had extremely subtly asked what tommy's been up to - and his developing brain folds in on itself. he doesn't understand why he's feeling Really Really Bad all of a sudden and he can't even identify what it is he's feeling (more jealousy than he ever has in his life), so he just gets angry and acts out. he breaks his skateboard and his arm trying to grind down a handrail at the park, and the chicken soup maddie makes him just tastes bitter.

the girlfriend's gone by the next time he sees tommy, who comments on how tall buck is getting - "hey, maybe you'll be as tall as me soon" - and buck doesn't know that's just something you say to kids, so he holds it close to his chest like it's precious because for some reason it makes him feel squirmy in a good way and he wants to live in that.

then another time, him and maddie are out at a baseball game and maddie's complaining about a girl at work who keeps throwing herself at tommy. "what do you mean?" asks buck, picturing catapults, and maddie tells him oh, she's always giggling at his jokes and he's not that funny, she's always flipping her hair and standing too close and touching his arm.

buck pictures this woman doing that, but he doesn't know what she looks like, so he just thinks about what it's like to stand so close to tommy - what it would be like to touch his arm, maybe higher up where his muscles are curved and solid. his chest feels tight all of a sudden, and he flushes when his eyes wander to one of the player's asses - it's where his gaze has been drawn the whole game, but suddenly for some reason it doesn't feel right to look there.

the thought that maddie might like tommy hits him like ice water. he asks and she makes a face, says an adamant no, like it had never even occurred to her that it was an option. buck's heart slowly stops racing but he never really gets drawn into the game, and he's quiet the rest of the evening, turning everything over in his head, confused about why it felt like it mattered so much.

he doesn't understand that feeling until mitch burke kisses him behind the bleachers eight months later, but by that point tommy's gone back to jersey with no indication he'll be coming back. so buck - young and kind of dumb because of it - puts it all aside and focuses on how his dating pool has just expanded.
