How To Bless Your Home For The Feast Of The Epiphany
Traditionally, Catholics bless their home and those who live in their household on the Feast of the Epiphany each year. It’s not difficult to do and we highly recommend you give it a try! Here’s how.
What You’ll Need To Bless Your Home
1. Prayers – These can be found below:
Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany
The traditional date of Epiphany is January 6, but in the United States it is celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8.
When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung. The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply, “Amen.”
The leader greets those present in the following words:
Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace.
Blessed be God forever. R/. Blessed be God forever.
In the following or similar words, the leader prepares those present for the blessing:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ’s light and love.
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 19:1-9:
Listen to the words of the holy Gospel according to Luke: Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.> When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.”
The intercessions are then said:
Leader: The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him. R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader:Lord Jesus Christ, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord.
After the intercessions the leader invites all present to say the Lord’s Prayer. - [Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.]
The leader says the prayer of blessing with hands joined:
Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill them (us) with the light of Christ, that their (our) concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen.
The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying:
May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. R/. Amen.
It is preferable to end the celebration with a suitable song, for example, “O Come, All Ye Faithful” or “We Three Kings.”
We three Kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star.
Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright Westward leading still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.
Born a babe on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown Him again King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. Refrain.
Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh Pray’r and praising, all men raising, Worship him God most high. Refrain
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. Refrain
Glorious now, behold Him arise, King and God sacrifice! Alleluia, Alleluia Earth to Heav’n replies. Refrain.

P: Bless, O Lord God, this creature, chalk, and let it be a help to mankind. All: Amen.

Meaning Of The Blessing 20 + C + M + B + 19
The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also represent the Latin words “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs symbolize the cross and the 20 and the 19 represent the year.
Epiphany blessing of your home - Any day between January 6th until January 13th.
Remember to use correct year. Pamphlet is not up-dated.
20+C+M+B+22 is the correct posting to your door.

From: To be done at any time between (January 5th - Through January 13th)
The Blessing of the Chalk by the Priest
Epiphany chalk is used to write the inscription over all the doors of one’s house. Soft classroom chalk of any color is best for writing on varnished or painted surfaces. A priest should bless the chalk on Epiphany Day, before the celebration of the main Mass of the day, using the following Blessing, which is taken from the Roman Ritual.
V. Our help os in the name of the Lord R. Who made heaven and earth. V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
O Lord God, bless + this chalk which Thou hast created, that it may be helpful to mankind, and grant that through the invocation of thy most holy name all those who use this chalk or with it write over the doors of their houses the names of thy saints: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, may by their merits and intercession receive health of body and protection of soul. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Later that day - or any day within the Octave of the Feast of the Epiphany - at home, the ceremony is completed by a priest, or the father, or senior member of the family. The following prayer is said once and at the main entrance of the house. All the family members should be present, and should accompany the priest or the head of the family as he or she goes from door to door - everyone keeping a respectful silence, or reciting the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary..
Christus Mansionem Benedicat - Christ Bless this House

The Blessing of the House
Let us pray.
Hear us, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, Eternal God, and send thy holy angel from heaven to watch over, cherish, protect, be with, and defend all who live in my house.
I call upon your saints: Caspar, Melchoir and Balthasar, to protect my family and my home from every harm and danger, and I place the marks of their holy names over the doors of my home to remain there as a constant reminder to us and to all who enter here that my house is truly a house of the Lord.
O God, make the door of my house wide enough to receive all who need human love and companionship; narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and strife.
Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, nor to straying feet but rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power.
O God, make the door of my house the gateway to they eternal kingdom. I ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ, thy Son. Amen
Epiphany Blessing from Fr. Higgins, Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish, Newton/Needham, Ma.
