Do you think that Patoranger will go back to a more Monster of the Week based format, or will it follow Kyuranger in being more focused on multi-episode story arcs?

I think with the success of the more multi-episode story arcs and longer narrative forms present in Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger (and to a much lesser extent Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger) that mirrors the success the Kamen Rider franchise has had doing the same that the trend is to move more in that direction.

With the popularity of the Heisei Kamen Rider revival couples with the fact that for a lot of people that’s all they’ve ever seen of the franchise or at least where they got started, it’s often easy to forget that the Showa side was driven very much by the one and done villains.  Sure, there were major exceptions for dramatic storylines going back as far as the Shocker Rider story. However, for the most part the villains lasted one or maybe two episodes and were gone with the story barely advancing until major shakeups took place.  There wasn’t the sense of continuing narrative or that if you missed an episode you’d miss something vital.  It was a more relaxed kind of storytelling.

Now though, audiences have become more used to longer stories and greater continuity and character development.  Can you imagine a modern Rider series that was just a monster of the week with occasional two or three part episodes?  No, that wouldn’t fit.  I kind of see Super Sentai going the same way.  Get the viewers really involved in the story, get them hooked on a continuing plot and you are much, much more likely to have the same audience tune in week after week. It keeps eyes on the show and thus, gets more people emotionally involved so when they see the toys and merchandise on the shelves, that emotional attachment carries over.  It’s a brilliant strategy both for ratings and marketing.

Especially if you are marketing higher-end, plot specific and pricier products via your Premium Service that are basically repaints of cheaper products on the shelves.  You want to cosplay as Hebitsukai Metal, better get your Dark Seiza Blaster from Premium Bandai! 

Sure, it might seems a cynical marketing strategy but it also creates a more involving series.  Kyuranger has taken some time to really get going but there again, it reflects the way Kamen Rider changed into a long-form narrative and how now, the seasons seem to take a bit more time to really ramp up the story.

After The Pizzaplex. episode one rewrite.

The car came to a stop in the spacious empty parking lot. The door swung open and a man sized shoe made contact with the ground. Gregory stepped out of the car and took in his surroundings. The morning air had a light breeze and smelled slightly of water dew.Gregory eyes drifted up to the giant sign towering up ahead. In big bold red letter read, “FREDDY FAZBEAR’S MEGA PIZZAWORLD”

A small chill went down his spine at the word “FREDDY”. He remained to stare at the sign. Flashbacks of long hallways, sharp turns, and neon lights played through his head like a film. He still remembered the feeling of panic and exhaustion, being our of breath from running from the terrors that chased him. Even the smell of pizza and musk was still etched into his brain after so many years. 

Gregory didn’t want to be here but he had to be. After his escape from the Pizzaplex he knew he had to return. He has unanswered questions that need to be solved. He did return after some time but when he did it was too late. Somehow, not long after he escaped, the Pizzaplex was destroyed. Turns out it was a massive sinkhole. The ground collapsed in and brought the building down with it. Nothing but rubble was left. 

Now here Gregory stood, right in front of him was the new and improved location. It was bigger, better, a place where fantasy and fun came to life. Well, that's what the advertisements said. Gregory knew this place wasn’t better, it wasn’t great at all. Nothing related to Fazbear Co. was good.

Freddy’s has a dark history and he was here for exactly that. He had a mission, a mystery from the far past yet to be uncovered. And what better way was there than getting behind the curtains of this place? 

Gregory took another look at the sign. The giant mascot of Freddy smiled down at him with a mouth full of teeth. Gregory thought back to his Freddy, the Glamrock one. Even after everything that happened he did miss his Freddy. He helped Gregory escape. Now he’s gone.

Gregory took a deep breath, adjusted his security guard hat, and walked through the gates.

I do take some umbrage with referring to eps in an episodic series as filler. Like, if the list of stand alone eps vastly outnumbers any given arc in the show by at least twice over, then those aren't filler eps they're just...eps.

Jacklyn: How do you feel about skydiving, Ryden?

Ryden: I hate it, next.

Jacklyn: You haven’t even tried it yet, weirdo.

Ryden: I don’t need to. Jumping out of a plane twenty something feet in the air and landing on the ground using a parachute that may or may not open. *scoffs* No thanks. Besides, you have to be 18 years or older to skydive.

Jacklyn: And?

Ryden: And? ...We’re not 18, Jack.

Jacklyn: *raises eyebrow* 

Ryden: *stares at her with squinty eyed confusion* They’re not going to let two 16 year olds jump out of a plane! That’s against the law, Jack! Illegal! 

Jacklyn: Nothing’s really illegal unless you get caught. We’ll just get a couple of fake IDs.

Ryden: ...I-I can’t believe you just said that. You are officially a bad influence on me.
