Epocilla sp. 1 (Hong Kong), female 豔蛛屬, 雌蛛
SALTICIDAE (Jumping spider family)
27 May 2012, HK Island east.
The female in this species is recognizable by the two long thin orange stripes on her cephalothorax which form a V shaped pattern, cutting straight across her pair of posterior lateral eyes and ending at her anterior lateral eyes. (As you can see in the bottom picture.)
The full mature adult should be up to 7 - 8 mm long and the one shown here feels to me like a bit younger than that.
But she makes up for youth by valor XD She's one of these jumping spiders that refuse to dash. Clearly she had the speed for dashing away. But after I'd stopped her with my palm and cut off her escape, the girl jumped. Hopped straight at my camera lens. I lowered her to the bannister to hop off again.
I've also seen some others (a male Hasarius adansoni, to be exact) react this way to what they no doubt see as my aggression. (He jumped for my finger.) Jumping spiders also have a trick of occasionally dashing towards me instead of the opposite way during running. Given their excellent sight, I hesitate to think it's only confusion. Have no idea whether this is their way of fighting back, or as a means of 'surprise' escape.
