Something about The Odyssey, and the axes of Odysseus' famous trick shot. I've seen it depicted in fiction with axes having rings on the bottom of the handle, or being axes with holes in the head (sometimes round holes, sometimes they have the same shape of the head). The film The Return depicts it as being shot through the holes for the handles... And that's the one disappointment I have with their depiction of Odysseus' trick shot, as they were the first film that depicted the correct type of bow and used the right Mycenean costumes, only to fumble here and forget the epsilon axe.
This kind of axe was invented in the Bronze Age - not sure by whom, but it spread through all the cultures of the Bronze Age, and survived the Late Bronze Age Collapse. It was in fact still in use in the Middle Ages among the Nordic populations.
THIS is why The Odyssey just says he shot through twelve axes, back in the day everyone would have known there was a kind of axe whose design allowed a skilled archer to shoot an arrow through it.
