Nakana.io Flash Round (Switch)
EQQO (Parallel Studio): This is such a weird game to review. It’s called EQQO, which is really close to “Ico” and it looks sorta vaguely like it and the hero escorts (well, carries) a companion through the entire game and when they leave them shadows attack and try to steal them. Yet they’re saying here it’s inspired by Ethiopian mythology. Oh and the companion is an egg, which makes me think they wanted to call it “EGGO” but then they saw Stranger Things and went “oh” (because I’m pretty sure they don’t have Eggos in France.) Oh also it’s like a touch based game where you control the camera by moving the Switch around, to the point where it kind of feels totally like it’s supposed to be a VR game? But it’s on Switch? [Checks notes] Hang on it was released in VR. It’s probably fine in VR, but it feels so insanely derivative of, uh, “this kind of thing” and none of the puzzles are interesting at all (push a switch, pull a chain, etc. etc.) so while I did finish this, I did do it while watching a documentary about Tony Slattery… and then a documentary about Peter Sellers. I mean it’s at least short (a couple of documentaries worth!) and honestly, very very polished for what it is. It’s like if the Wreckin’ Ball Adventure devs were way, way better at copying their influences, but maybe just do something… different than that.
Should anyone pay money for this? This is so polished, but it’s not interesting at all. I think there’s a chance if this was a buck or whatever on your VR system of choice you might give it a shot but I feel like there’d be better things to do with your dosh, even if you just had to save a few more pennies.
