My favorite part of the exhibit: the very last quagga! The mare died on the 12th of august in 1883 in the zoo in Amsterdam, without anyone realising she was an endling. There are only 23 taxidermy specimens of quaggas, and a lot of them aren't on display due to their fragility

This is one of the two taxidermy quaggas in the collection of Naturalis, and has recently been restored

Comparing two taxidermy Przewalski horses, one museum quality and a commercially made one that is uh.. not to be rude, not so much museum quality, but still cute in its own way

The one that was commercially made looks very scruffy. Part of that is the longer fur but it's also because of the lack of details. If the mount doesn't have the natural shapes and curves the animal's body should have, the hairs on the pelt will stick out in weird places, making it look sort of moth-eaten and patchy.

It is kind of sad to see such a rare animal being mounted with no attention to the details. Even though the commercial mount is kinda messy and anatomically incorrect (and extremely expensive 🥲), if I could afford it I would've bought him in a heartbeat

One of the highlights of the Malmö museum (in my opinion) was the taxidermy przewalski horse! I'll always be obsessed with these guys. I liked his pose and his calm expression
