You should have known better than to think Megumi Fushiguro would make a clean break.
Not because he was dramatic.
Megumi had never been dramatic.
That was the problem.
He hadn't argued when you ended things.
Hadn't raised his voice. Hadn't begged you to stay.
He had just stood there in the doorway of your apartment, silent for so long that you'd almost thought he hadn't heard you.
Then he'd look at you.
Really looked at you.
And said, quietly, “Okay.”
That had been three months ago.
For three months, you'd heard nothing from him.
No calls.
No texts.
No late-night appearances outside your dorm room.
Nothing.
At first, you'd been relieved.
Then I was confused.
Then—though you hated admitting it—a little hurt.
Years together, and apparently Megumi could simply accept that it was over.
You'd been wrong about that.
You realized it on a Thursday afternoon.
You were sitting alone in a coffee shop several blocks away from Jujutsu High, half-listening to the rain tapping against the windows while you stared down at your phone.
The place was new.
At least, new to you.
You'd only started coming here two weeks ago.
It was quiet. Small. Hidden between a bookstore and an old clothing shop. Nobody from school ever came here.
That was the point.
You lifted your coffee to your lips.
Then the bell above the door chimed.
You didn't look up immediately.
“Welcome in,” the barista said.
A familiar voice answered.
“Black coffee.”
Your hand stopped halfway to your mouth.
No.
Slowly, you lowered the cup.
The barista repeated the order.
“Anything else?”
“No.”
You stared at the rain-streaked window in front of you.
Maybe you were imagining things.
There were plenty of people with low voices.
Plenty of people who sounded tired all the time.
Plenty of people who—
A chair scraped against the floor.
Directly across from you.
You looked up.
Megumi sat down.
For a moment, neither of you said anything.
He looked exactly the same.
Dark uniform. Messy black hair. That permanently exhausted expression.
As if three months hadn't passed.
As if you hadn't ended your relationship.
As if he hadn't disappeared completely from your life.
Your fingers slowly tightened around your cup.
“What are you doing?”
Megumi glanced toward the counter as the barista placed his coffee down.
Then he looked back at you.
“Getting coffee.”
“You don't even like coffee.”
“I know.”
You stared at him.
His expression didn't change.
That somehow made it worse.
“Megumi.”
“What?”
“This isn't funny.”
“I wasn't joking.”
You leaned back in your chair.
Outside, rain slid down the glass in thin streams.
He reached for his coffee.
Calm.
Completely calm.
And suddenly, you hated that.
“You've been ignoring me for three months.”
“You broke up with me.”
“That's not the point.”
“Then what's the point?”
Your mouth opened.
Closed.
Megumi took a sip of his coffee.
His face twisted almost imperceptibly.
You would have laughed once.
You almost did.
Almost.
Instead, you narrowed your eyes.
“You're acting weird.”
He looked at you.
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
The coffee shop was nearly empty.
A couple sitting near the front.
Someone working on a laptop.
The barista cleaning the counter.
Nobody was paying attention to you.
Nobody noticed the way your stomach had started to twist.
Megumi rested his forearms against the table.
“You've been coming here a lot.”
Everything inside you went still.
His expression remained neutral.
You stared at him.
“What?”
“This place.”
He glanced around.
“It's quieter than the one you used to go to.”
Your grip tightened.
“How do you know that?”
Megumi looked back at you.
For the first time since he'd sat down, something changed in his expression.
Not much.
Just the slightest narrowing of his eyes.
Like he was confused by the question.
“You told me you liked quiet places.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Another pause.
Then—
“I know.”
Your heartbeat skipped.
Megumi's fingers tapped once against his coffee cup.
You remembered those hands.
You remembered falling asleep beside him and feeling them absentmindedly brush against yours.
You remembered him holding your wrist when you were about to walk away during an argument.
Not hard.
Never hard.
Just enough to make you stop.
At the time, you'd thought it was sweet.
Now you weren't so sure.
“You've been following me.”
His eyes lifted to yours.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Too soon.
You stared at him.
He stared back.
Then, after a moment, Megumi sighed softly.
“You make it sound worse than it is.”
Your chair scraped against the floor as you stood.
“Megumi—”
“I haven't done anything.”
You froze.
His voice was still quiet.
Still controlled.
But something underneath it made the words land differently.
“I haven't talked to you. I haven't touched you. I haven't called.”
His gaze stayed on you.
“You said you wanted space.”
Your throat felt tight.
“So I gave you space.”
You didn't know what to say.
Megumi's eyes dropped briefly to your hands.
Then back to your face.
“But that doesn't mean I stopped caring where you are.”
A cold feeling crawled down your spine.
He seemed to notice.
Of course he did.
Megumi always noticed.
His expression softened.
And somehow, that was worse.
“You're scared of me.”
You swallowed.
“No.”
“Don't lie.”
“I didn't say—”
“You're doing that thing with your hand.”
Your fingers immediately stopped moving.
Megumi looked at them.
Then at you.
“When you're nervous.”
The silence stretched between you.
You hadn't even realized you were doing it.
Slowly, Megumi stood.
You took a step back.
His eyes flickered toward the movement.
Just for a second.
But you saw it.
The way his jaw tightened.
The way his shoulders stiffened.
He noticed the distance.
And he didn't like it.
“I'm leaving,” you said.
“Okay.”
You frowned.
Megumi stepped aside.
Giving you a clear path toward the door.
For a second, you hesitated.
Then you walked past him.
You could feel his eyes on you.
The bell above the door chimed as you stepped outside.
Cold rain immediately hits your skin.
You didn't look back.
You kept walking.
One block.
Two.
Three.
Your heart wouldn't slow down.
You told yourself you were overreacting.
Megumi was your ex.
Of course he knew things about you.
Of course he recognized your nervous habits.
Of course it was possible that he'd simply stumbled into the same coffee shop.
It was possible.
Right?
You reached the corner and stopped beneath the awning of a closed store.
Then, against every instinct telling you not to—
You looked back.
The coffee shop was across the street.
Through the window, you could see Megumi still standing exactly where you'd left him.
He wasn't drinking his coffee.
He wasn't moving.
He was watching you.
Your breath caught.
And then—
Slowly—
Megumi lifted one hand.
Not waving.
Just resting his fingers against the window.
His eyes never left yours.
A message appeared on your phone.
You looked down.
Megumi.
Your stomach dropped.
You forgot your umbrella.
You looked up.
He was still standing there.
Watching.
Another message appeared.
Don't walk home alone.
Your fingers hovered over the screen.
Then a third.
It's dangerous this late.
You stared at it.
The rain continued to fall.
Your heart pounded harder.
Because Megumi knew exactly what time you left school.
He knew you didn't normally walk home this way.
He knew this coffee shop wasn't somewhere you'd told him about.
And suddenly, three months of silence didn't feel like absence anymore.
It felt like patience.
Another message appeared.
This one made your blood run cold.
I let you leave because I thought you'd come back.
You couldn't breathe.
Across the street, Megumi finally moved.
He picked up his umbrella.
And stepped toward the door.
Your phone buzzed one last time.
You didn't.
The door opened.
Megumi stepped outside.
So I changed my mind.
By the next morning, you'd convinced yourself that you were overreacting.
Mostly.
You hadn't slept much.
Every time you closed your eyes, you saw Megumi standing beneath the coffee shop's awning.
You'd checked your locks twice.
Then a third time.
You'd even considered telling Gojo.
But what exactly were you supposed to say?
My ex showed up at a coffee shop.
He knows where I go.
He sent me texts.
None of that sounded dangerous enough to justify the knot that had been sitting in your stomach all night.
So you went to class.
You acted normal.
And, for the first few hours, everything was normal.
Until someone sat beside you at lunch.
“Hey.”
You looked up.
A familiar second-year from another class smiled at you.
“Mind if I sit here?”
You shook your head.
“Go ahead.”
He dropped into the seat beside you.
You'd worked with him on a couple of missions before. He was easygoing, funny, and—unlike most sorcerers—you didn't feel like you had to constantly watch your back around him.
“So,” he said, opening his lunch, “are you doing anything after class?”
“No.”
“Want to grab something to eat?”
You hesitated.
Then shrugged.
“Sure.”
His smile widened.
“Cool.”
You didn't notice Megumi immediately.
Not until the conversation suddenly stopped.
You glanced across the cafeteria.
He was standing near the entrance.
His expression was unreadable.
Your stomach dropped.
He hadn't been there a second ago.
You looked away.
Maybe if you ignored him—
“So,” the guy beside you continued, “there's this place downtown—”
“Who is he?”
You froze.
Megumi's voice came from behind you.
You slowly turned.
He stood beside the table.
His hands were in his pockets.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
You swallowed.
“Megumi.”
He looked at the guy beside you.
Then back at you.
“Who is he?”
The guy raised an eyebrow.
“I'm—”
“I wasn't asking you.”
The cafeteria seemed quieter.
You frowned.
“What's your problem?”
“Nothing.”
Megumi's gaze moved back toward him.
“Do you have plans after class?”
The guy blinked.
“Uh…”
“He asked me,” you said.
“I know.”
Megumi looked at you.
Something about his expression made your chest tighten.
“Then why are you answering for him?”
You stared.
He didn't say anything else.
He simply pulled out the chair across from you and sat down.
Like he belonged there.
Like he had every right.
The other guy shifted uncomfortably.
You could feel Megumi watching him.
Not glaring.
Not threatening.
Just watching.
And somehow, that was worse.
Eventually, the guy cleared his throat.
“I'll, uh… see you later.”
You watched him leave.
Then turned toward Megumi.
“What was that?”
Megumi picked up your unopened drink.
You stared at his hand.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
Slowly, he placed it back down.
“What?”
“You don't get to do that.”
“Do what?”
“You know exactly what.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“You're going out with him.”
It wasn't a question.
You stared at him.
“That's none of your business.”
“It is to me.”
“No, it isn't.”
Megumi's jaw tightened.
For a moment, you thought he might argue.
Instead, he leaned back.
“Fine.”
The word sounded almost casual.
You didn't believe him.
“You're still coming to training tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He stood.
Then leaned slightly closer.
His voice dropped so only you could hear.
“Because I'd rather talk to you when we're alone.”
Your heartbeat jumped.
“There's nothing to talk about.”
Megumi looked at you for several seconds.
Then he smiled.
Barely.
It wasn't a happy smile.
It was the kind of smile that made you realize he'd already decided something.
“There is.”
He walked away.
You watched him disappear through the cafeteria doors.
Your phone buzzed.
You didn't want to look.
You did anyway.
Megumi.
You shouldn't go with him.
You stared.
Another message.
He doesn't know you.
Another.
I do.
Your heart pounded.
You typed before you could stop yourself.
You're my ex. You don't get a say in who I spend time with.
The typing indicator appeared almost immediately.
Then it disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally:
I know.
A pause.
That's what I'm trying to fix.
You stared at the screen.
Then another message came through.
You used to hate eating alone.
Your stomach dropped.
You always picked the seat facing the door.
Another.
You still tap your thumb against your cup when you're anxious.
Your blood ran cold.
You still sleep with the window cracked even when it's cold.
You stopped breathing.
The final message appeared.
And you still look behind you when you think someone's following you.
Slowly, you looked over your shoulder.
The cafeteria doors were closed.
Megumi was gone.
You turned back around.
Your phone buzzed again.
Don't worry.
A pause.
I'm not following you.
You stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
I'm waiting for you to notice me.
Your fingers went numb.
And somewhere down the hallway, completely out of sight—
Megumi stood with his back against the wall, phone in hand.
Reading your response.
Waiting.
Patiently.
Because three months had taught him something.
You could run from him.
You could ignore him.
You could even convince yourself you didn't love him anymore.
But Megumi had never been good at giving up.
You didn't sleep.
By morning, you'd convinced yourself the hair tie was a coincidence.
It had to be.
There were explanations for everything.
Maybe you'd dropped it outside.
Maybe someone had found it.
Maybe Megumi had—
No.
You refused to finish that thought.
You arrived at Jujutsu High earlier than usual, hoping the training grounds would be empty.
They weren't.
Megumi was already there.
Of course he was.
He stood beneath one of the trees, hands tucked into his pockets, staring out across the field.
He looked completely ordinary.
That almost made you angry.
“You're early.”
His eyes moved toward you.
“So are you.”
You dropped your bag onto the ground.
“I wanted to talk.”
Megumi nodded.
“Okay.”
You stared at him.
“You're not going to deny it?”
“Deny what?”
“You know what.”
His expression remained neutral.
You stepped closer.
“The messages. The hair tie. Following me yesterday.”
“I didn't follow you.”
“You were outside the restaurant.”
“Yes.”
“That is following me.”
“No.”
Your eyebrows pulled together.
“What would you call it?”
Megumi looked at you.
“Watching.”
Your stomach turned.
“You think that's better?”
“I think it's different.”
“How?”
“I wasn't trying to hide.”
“You were standing across the street.”
“I wanted to see you.”
“You've said that.”
“I meant it.”
You stared at him.
There was something different about him today.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just certain.
“You need to stop.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Stop what?”
“All of it.”
A pause.
“The messages. Showing up everywhere. Watching me. Acting like you still have some kind of claim over me.”
Megumi's jaw tightened.
“I don't have a claim over you.”
“Good.”
“I have a memory.”
You frowned.
“What?”
“I remember you.”
He took one step toward you.
“You think three months means I forgot everything?”
Another step.
“I remember what you drink.”
Another.
“How you take your coffee.”
Another.
“What side of the bed do you sleep on?”
You stopped breathing.
“How you get quiet when you're upset.”
He was close now.
Too close.
“And how you look at the floor when you're lying.”
You forced yourself not to step backward.
“You're proving my point.”
His eyes searched your face.
“You're scared.”
“Yes.”
That seemed to hurt him.
Only for a second.
His expression tightened.
Then he looked away.
“I don't want you to be.”
“But I am.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then you heard footsteps behind you.
You turned.
The guy from yesterday was walking across the field.
He lifted a hand when he saw you.
“Hey.”
You smiled.
“Hey.”
Megumi went completely still.
The guy approached.
“Didn't know you trained this early.”
“Yeah. Couldn't sleep.”
“Same.”
He glanced at Megumi.
“Morning.”
Megumi looked at him.
“Morning.”
The word was polite.
Almost unnaturally so.
You watched them.
The other guy looked between you.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah,” you said.
Megumi answered at the same time.
“No.”
You looked at him.
His eyes remained fixed on the other man.
“Megumi.”
He finally looked at you.
“I'm fine.”
The other guy laughed awkwardly.
“Right.”
He turned toward you.
“So, about yesterday—”
“She's busy.”
Megumi's voice was quiet.
The guy frowned.
“I was talking to her.”
“I know.”
“Then let her answer.”
You stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Megumi's gaze snapped to you.
You could see the anger now.
Not explosive.
Something colder.
“You don't get to decide who I talk to.”
“I know.”
“Then act like it.”
His eyes flickered.
For a moment, neither of you moved.
Then he stepped aside.
“Fine.”
You exhaled.
The other guy gave you a confused look.
“You sure you're okay?”
You nodded.
“Yeah.”
Megumi turned away.
He walked toward the other side of the field.
You watched him go.
For one brief second, you thought you'd actually gotten through to him.
Then your phone vibrated.
You looked down.
Megumi.
I won't do anything.
You frowned.
Another message.
Not here.
Your eyes lifted toward him.
He was standing with his back to you.
Another message appeared.
But don't mistake that for me accepting this.
Your stomach sank.
Then:
I can be patient.
You stared at the screen.
I've been patient for three months.
You locked your phone.
“Hey.”
You looked at the guy beside you.
He was smiling.
“Want to train together?”
You hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Sure.”
Across the field, Megumi's head turned.
He watched you walk away with someone else.
His expression didn't change.
But his hand slowly tightened around the phone in his pocket.
He had promised himself he wouldn't do anything.
He hadn't said how long that promise would last.
not on you.
By the end of training, you were exhausted.
Your arms ached.
Your clothes were damp with sweat.
And, thankfully, Megumi had disappeared.
You hadn't seen him for nearly two hours.
You should have felt relieved.
Instead, you kept catching yourself looking toward the training field.
Nothing.
No black hair.
No shadow beneath the trees.
No quiet stare from across the courtyard.
Maybe he'd finally listened.
You finished gathering your things and started toward the dorms.
“Wait.”
You stopped.
The guy from training jogged toward you.
“Are you heading back?”
“Yeah.”
“Mind if I walk with you?”
You hesitated.
Then smiled.
“Sure.”
You walked together.
It was easy.
He talked about training, complained about one of the instructors, and made you laugh.
Normal.
You desperately needed normal.
By the time you reached the dorms, you'd almost forgotten the knot in your stomach.
He stopped at the bottom of the steps.
“I had fun yesterday.”
You smiled.
“Me too.”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I was wondering if maybe you'd want to do it again.”
You understood immediately.
Your heart fluttered.
“I—”
A voice came from behind you.
“She said no.”
You froze.
The guy's expression changed.
Slowly, you turned.
Megumi stood at the end of the walkway.
You hadn't heard him approach.
His hands were in his pockets.
His face was expressionless.
But his eyes—
They were fixed on the person standing beside you.
“What the hell, Megumi?”
He ignored you.
The other guy frowned.
“You don't speak for her.”
Megumi's gaze shifted toward him.
“I know.”
“Then why are you answering?”
“Because I know what she's going to say.”
Your jaw tightened.
“You don't.”
Megumi finally looked at you.
“Yes, I do.”
You stared at him.
“No. You don't know me anymore.”
Something in his expression changed.
Barely.
But you saw it.
Pain.
Then anger.
Then nothing.
He walked closer.
“Don't say that.”
“Why?”
“Because it's not true.”
“It is.”
“No.”
His voice was quieter now.
“You don't get to erase years because you decided you were finished.”
The other guy stepped forward.
“Hey. Maybe you should back off.”
Megumi's eyes moved toward him.
The air changed.
You felt it immediately.
The shadows around Megumi's feet seemed darker.
His expression remained perfectly calm.
“Stay out of this.”
“Megumi.”
You grabbed his arm.
He looked down at your hand.
For a second, everything stopped.
You hadn't touched him since the breakup.
His eyes softened.
His entire body seemed to relax beneath your fingers.
He looked at your hand like you'd given him something precious.
Then he looked back at you.
“You still remember.”
Your heart sank.
“Remember what?”
“What it feels like to touch me.”
You immediately pulled away.
His expression hardened.
“Don't.”
You stepped back.
“Don't what?”
“Don't look at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I'm a stranger.”
You swallowed.
“You are.”
His face went blank.
Completely blank.
The other guy moved closer to you.
Megumi noticed.
Of course he noticed.
“You should go,” Megumi said.
The guy shook his head.
“No.”
Megumi tilted his head slightly.
“You really want to do this?”
“Do what?”
Megumi smiled.
It was small.
Cold.
“Nothing.”
You stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Megumi looked at you.
You could see something burning behind his eyes.
“Go inside.”
“No.”
“Please.”
The word came out softer than you expected.
Megumi went still.
You stared at him.
“Please just leave me alone tonight.”
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.”
He turned around.
I walked away.
You watched until he disappeared around the corner.
The guy beside you exhaled.
“Your ex is terrifying.”
You laughed nervously.
“Yeah.”
He looked at you.
“You sure you're okay?”
You nodded.
“I'm fine.”
But neither of you noticed the figure standing on the roof across the courtyard.
Megumi watched until you disappeared inside.
He waited.
One minute.
Two.
Five.
Then your bedroom light turned on.
He looked at it.
His phone was already in his hand.
He typed.
Deleted.
Typed again.
Finally:
You should have come back.
He stared at the message.
Didn't send it.
Instead, he locked his phone.
He told himself he was leaving.
That he'd walk away.
That he would respect your choice.
Then he saw your bedroom curtain move.
And imagined someone else standing beside you.
His jaw tightened.
No.
He couldn't do this.
He couldn't watch someone else take his place.
He'd tried being patient.
He'd tried being reasonable.
He'd tried letting you go.
And all it had gotten him was three months of pretending he could live without you.
Megumi looked up at your window.
His expression was almost peaceful.
“You should have come back,” he whispered.
Then he smiled faintly.
“Now I'm going to have to come get you.”
You had barely gotten into bed when your phone buzzed.
You looked at the screen.
Megumi.
You stared at his name.
You didn't answer.
The phone stopped.
A minute later, it buzzed again.
Open the door.
Your stomach dropped.
You sat upright.
For several seconds, you didn't move.
Then came three quiet knocks.
Your blood ran cold.
No.
You couldn't have heard that.
Three more knocks.
Slow.
Patient.
You slipped out of bed and walked toward the door.
“Who's there?”
Silence.
You already knew.
“Megumi?”
“Yeah.”
Your hand hovered over the lock.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to talk.”
“You can talk from there.”
A pause.
“I don't think you want to.”
You stepped away from the door.
“I'm not letting you in.”
Silence.
Then—
“Okay.”
You frowned.
That was too easy.
You took another step backward.
“Goodnight, Megumi.”
You turned away.
The lock clicked.
You froze.
Slowly, you looked back.
The door opened.
Megumi stepped inside.
Your heart slammed against your ribs.
“How did you—”
“You changed the lock.”
His eyes moved briefly toward the door.
“It's not very good.”
“You can't just come into my room!”
“I know.”
He closed the door behind himself.
Quietly.
No anger.
No raised voice.
He simply stood there, looking at you.
You backed away.
“What do you want?”
Megumi's eyes softened.
“You.”
Your breath caught.
“You need to leave.”
“I know.”
“Then leave.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
His expression tightened.
“Because I watched you today.”
You went still.
He continued.
“I watched you laugh with him.”
“Megumi—”
“I watched him touch you.”
His voice remained quiet.
“I watched you let him.”
You shook your head.
“You don't get to be angry about that.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to decide who I see.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to come into my room whenever you want.”
His eyes met yours.
“I know.”
You stared at him.
“Then why are you here?”
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he stepped closer.
“Because knowing doesn't make it easier.”
You took another step back.
He stopped immediately.
That tiny gesture almost made you breathe easier.
Then he spoke.
“I tried.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“I stayed away.”
You swallowed.
“I gave you three months.”
“I didn't ask you to.”
“I know.”
He looked down.
His hands curled at his sides.
“I thought if I gave you enough time, you'd remember what we had.”
He looked back at you.
“You didn't.”
Your voice shook.
“Megumi…”
“I watched you move on.”
He stepped closer again.
“I watched someone else make you laugh.”
Another step.
“I watched him put his hands on you.”
You backed into the edge of your desk.
Megumi stopped directly in front of you.
His eyes searched your face.
“Do you know what I realized?”
You didn't answer.
“I don't want to watch anymore.”
Your heart pounded.
“What does that mean?”
His gaze dropped to your hands.
Then your face.
“It means I'm done waiting for you to come back.”
A cold feeling settled in your chest.
“Then what are you going to do?”
Megumi reached for your coat hanging beside the door.
He held it out to you.
“Come with me.”
You stared at him.
“No.”
His expression barely changed.
“You're coming with me.”
“I'm not.”
“I don't want to fight you.”
“Then don't.”
“I won't.”
He set your coat down.
For a moment, you thought that meant he was giving up.
Then he reached into his pocket.
Your eyes widened when you saw your phone in his hand.
Your phone.
The one you'd been holding five minutes ago.
“How did you—”
“You dropped it.”
“I didn't.”
“Come on.”
You shook your head.
“No.”
He sighed.
There was something almost heartbreakingly tired in his expression.
“I really didn't want it to be like this.”
“Like what?”
He looked at you.
“Me having to come get you.”
Your heart pounded.
“Megumi, I'm not going anywhere with you.”
His eyes closed briefly.
When they opened again, the softness was gone.
Not replaced by rage.
By certainty.
“Okay.”
He stepped toward you.
You tried to move around him.
He caught your wrist.
Not violently.
Just firmly enough to stop you.
You stared at his hand.
Then at him.
“Let go.”
He didn't.
“Megumi.”
“I can't.”
“You're scaring me.”
His grip loosened.
For one second, you thought he'd release you.
Instead, he whispered,
“I know.”
And somehow that was worse.
Because he wasn't unaware.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
He simply didn't care enough to stop.
“I'll make it easy,” he murmured.
You shook your head.
“No.”
“I won't hurt you.”
“That's not the point.”
“I know.”
He looked at you for a long moment.
Then he pulled your coat from the desk and draped it over your shoulders.
The gesture was almost gentle.
Familiar. Like he'd done it hundreds of times before.
And definitely not the kind that involved feelings.
He rarely told people what was on his mind, preferring to keep everything tucked safely behind quiet responses, blank expressions, and the occasional shrug.
If something bothered him...
He'd deal with it himself.
If something made him happy...
You'd probably never know.
And if he cared about someone?
Well...
You'd have to figure that one out on your own.
There was, however, one thing Megumi seemed perfectly comfortable expressing himself through.
Music.
He almost always had his wired headphones with him.
Sometimes one earbud sat in his ear.
Sometimes both.
Walking to class.
Studying.
Training.
Waiting around between missions.
Even during those quiet walks home you took together.
It was starting to get annoying.
Not because you hated music.
Because you were curious.
What was he listening to?
What songs did he replay?
What kind of music did the quietest person you knew actually like?
You'd asked before.
He'd simply said, "...Music."
Oh, sooooo helpful.
Very helpful.
So eventually...
You decided you'd just have to find out yourself.
The walk home has always been a routine.
Not in the boring sense, like it once was.
More in the comforting one.
The route never changed.
Left at the convenience store.
Across the small bridge.
Past the row of vending machines that always seemed to have at least one out of order.
Then the long sidewalk that led back toward the dorms.
Somehow...
You always ended up walking it together.
Today was no different.
The afternoon sun hung low in the sky, bathing everything in warm shades of gold as students gradually disappeared in different directions.
You, unfortunately, had discovered you were painfully bored.
"...So."
"Mhm."
"...How was training?"
"...Fine."
"...That's all?"
"...Mhm."
You sighed dramatically.
"Do you ever answer with more than one word?"
"...Sometimes."
"...When?"
He thought about it.
"...I don't know."
"You are unbelievable."
Megumi glanced at you for a brief second before looking back down the sidewalk.
"...You keep talking anyway."
"...Because someone has to carry this conversation."
"...Mhm."
You groaned loud enough for a passing cyclist to glance over.
"You know, one day you're going to miss my talking."
"...Probably."
"...That sounded sarcastic."
"It wasn't."
"...Liar."
The conversation fizzled out after that.
Well...
Your side of it did.
Megumi continued walking at his usual pace, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket.
A thin white wire disappeared beneath the collar of his hoodie.
You noticed it only because the afternoon had become so quiet.
"...Are you listening to music?"
"Mhm."
"You've been listening this whole time?"
"...Yeah."
"...And you let me talk to myself?"
"I was listening."
"You nodded three times."
"...I did."
"That's barely participating."
He didn't argue.
Instead, he reached up, pulling one of the wired earbuds from his ear.
He held it toward you.
"...Here."
You blinked.
"...Really?"
"Mhm."
"You don't mind?"
"...No."
You took it carefully, trying not to let your fingers brush his for too long.
The moment the music started, your expression softened.
Homesick by Wave To Earth.
"...Oh."
Megumi looked over.
"...What?"
"I know this song."
"...Do you?"
"Mhm."
“One of my favourite songs actually.”
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
The two of you simply kept walking, sharing the same song beneath the fading afternoon sky.
It felt...
Strangely peaceful.
When the song changed, you smiled.
"...You actually have good taste."
"...I know."
You looked at him in mock disbelief.
"...Was that confidence?"
"...Maybe."
"I should've kept the earbud."
"...Mmmm too late."
"You know Megumi, you've changed."
"I haven't."
"You smiled earlier too."
"...Did I?"
"Mhm."
"...That's unfortunate."
You laughed.
"No, it's not."
The corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly.
"...You're smiling again."
"...You're imagining things."
"I literally watched it happen."
"...Mhm."
"You know, I think you secretly like talking to me."
"I tolerate it."
"Wow."
"...Generously."
You nudged his shoulder.
"You're truly impossible."
"Yet... you still walk home with me."
"..."
"...That's different."
"...How?"
You opened your mouth.
Closed it.
"...I don't know."
Megumi looked ahead again.
"...Thought so."
The music continued, one song fading into the next.
Sometimes you talked over it.
Sometimes neither of you said anything at all.
Oddly enough...
The silence never felt empty.
It was filled with footsteps.
The breeze drifting through the trees.
The occasional sound of cars passing.
And the quiet understanding that neither of you had to fill every second with words.
By the time the dorms came into view, the playlist had nearly ended.
You reluctantly handed the earbud back.
"...Thanks."
"Mhm."
"...Can I make a confession?"
Megumi raised an eyebrow.
“…Hm?”
"I think I liked listening to your music more than talking to you."
He clipped the earbud back into place.
"...I know."
"...You were supposed to be offended."
"...I'm not."
"...Why?"
He opened the dorm door, waiting for you to walk in first.
"...Because you'll ask again tomorrow."
You paused.
"...Will I?"
"...Mhm."
"..."
"...Maybe."
The next afternoon...
Before you'd even had the chance to ask—
Megumi silently held out one earbud.
You smiled as you took it.
Somehow...
It had already become part of the walk home.

wait can we also talk about how i’m ranked unreal in fortnite now 🙏🙏🙏😛😛✌️✌️🐐
Not in an obvious way. He wasn't the type to announce that he wanted your company, and he certainly wasn't going to admit that he'd begun gravitating toward you.
But somehow, whenever you looked up there he was.
Across the training field, At the table beside yours during breakfast, Walking next to you on the way back from missions, Sitting close enough that your shoulders occasionally brushed.
It was almost strange, especially because Megumi wasn't particularly affectionate. At least, not with anyone else.
“Are you following me?” You stopped abruptly in the hallway.
“No.” Megumi, who had been walking beside you, stopped too.
You stared at him.
He stared back.
“You're going the same direction I am.”
“Yeah.” he answered like you were saying the most obvious thing ever
“You've been going the same direction I have for the last ten minutes.”
A pause.
“…We have class.” he deadpanned
“You have class in the opposite direction.”
Megumi's expression didn't change.
You raised an eyebrow.
He looked away. “Whatever.”
And then he continued walking.
You couldn't help but laugh as you caught up.
“Were you seriously following me?” you said smiling
“I said no.” he mumbled
“You're terrible at lying.” you smiled even harder
“I'm not lying.” he said a little louder
“You are.”
Megumi glanced at you.
For a second, something softened in his expression, Then his eyes moved away again.
“Just keep walking.”
You did.
Neither of you mentioned that he'd slowed his pace so you could walk beside him.
It got worse during training, Or better, Depending on who you asked.
Gojo had paired the two of you together again, which meant Megumi had spent the better part of the afternoon watching you.
Not training. Watching.
“You're staring again,” you said.
Megumi's brows pulled together.
“I’m watching your movements.”
“You've been watching me for five minutes and I haven't moved.”
“…You're distracting.”
You blinked.
Megumi seemed to realize what he'd just said.
His ears turned faintly red.
You smiled.
“Am I?”
“Forget it.”
He turned away.
You laughed.
“Megumi.”
“What?”
“You're cute when you're embarrassed.”
He froze.
Completely.
You hadn't expected the reaction.
His shoulders stiffened, and he stared straight ahead as though the training field had suddenly become the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen.
Then, quietly—
“Don't say things like that.”
“Why?”
He looked at you.
His expression was almost painfully serious.
“Because I like hearing it.”
Your smile disappeared.
For once, Megumi looked away first.
And then, as though admitting that hadn't been enough, he stepped closer.
Close enough that your arms brushed.
Neither of you moved.
Megumi looked down at your hand.
Then back at your face.
“You're staying after training, right?”
You frowned.
“I don't know. Why?”
His fingers twitched at his side.
“…Just stay.”
There was something almost vulnerable in the way he said it.
So you nodded.
“Okay.”
Megumi relaxed immediately.
His shoulders dropped.
And the smallest smile appeared on his face.
“Okay.”
He looked almost relieved.
Like he'd been waiting all day just to hear you say yes.
That's exactly how you found yourself in the situation you were in now, in Megumi's dorm, still flustered from being pushed back against the door as soon as it latched behind you and being kissed with such impatience like you might disappear any second.
He kissed down your neck “fuck been thinking about this all day” he mumbled against your skin.
This was new, actually foreign, he is emotionally constipated like Nobara once said and it's the same for in the bedroom, biting his lip to hold back his moans only letting the occasional groan of your name slip out.
When he dropped to his knees in front of your already flustered body, you let out a surprised sound, he looked up at you like you were his owner and he was a puppy begging for a treat. His eyes were so wide, his cheek pressed against your lower stomach.
“Gumi what has gotten into you” you said, reaching down and ruffling his already messy hair.
“Just need you, need you so bad it hurts” he whined out
“Yeah? What do you need?” you whispered down at him
“Your hand, your mouth, anything y/n just please” he said, his eyes getting even more puppy-like.
After that final please it was a blur, a blur of kissing so hard and fast teeth clashed, a blur of clothes getting stripped off and thrown somewhere and a blur of stumbling to the bed.
He was sprawled out on the bed while you were kneeled beside him on the plush surface, he was naked, already breathing heavy, chest already red, cock already hard and standing for you and all you did was kiss him.
“Please” he whimpered out
You bent over and let spit drip out of your mouth directly onto his length, as soon as it hit his hips bucked up. You wasted no time wrapping your hand around him, he immediately tensed up in pleasure letting out a long breathy moan.
“Gosh what's got you so worked up, gumi?” you said with a chuckle not stopping your movements
“Nghh i had a- fuck a dream about you” he struggled
“Yeah got you all needy for me hm?” you said tilting your head sideways at him
All you got in response was a nod and a whimper of your name, you leaned down and kissed your way around his abs and down his happy trail, you gave a quick kiss to his tip causing his body to thrash as he cursed.
Your tongue connected to his balls, hand still working on his length, his hand had left the sheets and now was gripping your back with such a tight grip you were for sure going to have a bruise tomorrow.
“Oh fuck y/n im gonna fuck im gonna cum” he called out his body thrashing even more now, you kept your movement on his cock the same, ypu tightiend your grip and sucked his balls harder, his body stilled and he cried out your name as you felt his warm seed spread over your face and hand. You pulled away from him smiling to see him eyes still scrunched up in pleasure, breathing heaver than before, and his cock still standing angry and red.
“Can you please sit on my dick” he whined out eyes still closed, hand still on your back grip still as tight.
You smirked and swung your leg over his hips to take your seat.
