Today I tried going on a treadmill for the first time in years. 

Things I learned on the treadmill today:

1. Speeding up does not help  you finish faster if your goal is TIME, not DISTANCE.

2. You can't speed up by moving your legs faster. You just run into the front of the treadmill.

3. Getting off afterward and trying to walk on ground that doesn't move is REALLY hard.

New Pet Peeve:

People at the gym who finish using a machine and walk away and leave 180 pounds of weights on it. I am small and I have already done most of my workout and I do not want to have to drag YOUR ginormous weights off the machine before I can finish it. Pick up after yourself. This is a kindergarten lesson.

Car Update

So my faithful readers are all informed, Diane has been released from the car hospital! They got her fixed up and she seems to be doing just fine!

STORY TIME! OR, WHY I DIDN'T GO TO THE GYM TODAY

This morning, I decided to go to the gym. This was a big decision for me because I have never been to this particular gym before, so I would have to TALK to someone in order to set up my membership, and after that I would be trying to figure out how to function in a NEW place. These are scary things for me. But I was gonna do them, dammit! I was gonna be a big STRONG brave adventurer!

The first thing that went wrong was entirely my own fault. I thought I had a pretty good idea of where the place was, so I got in my '66 Ford Fairlaine and drove off. (It's very important that you picture this car properly, cause she's cool. Also you should know that her name is Diane.) I headed out without bringing directions or my phone with me. I knew the gym was on 99W, and I knew the address started with "14," so I figured it should be near where 14th St crosses 99. Logical, right?

Turns out that's not actually how addresses work in my town. So I drove around for a while and then decided to come home so I could actually look it up. I grabbed the lever that controls my turn signal, and pushed it up to turn on the right-hand turn signal so I could turn down a side street and turn around. 

The turn signal went on.

And the lever came off in my hand.

I turned into a random parking lot and stared at the bit of metal in my hand for a while, the turn signal blinking at me all the while. Of course it was stuck ON now. I imagined how I would have to drive home if I couldn't fix it, telling the whole world that I was constantly turning right, when in fact I was doing no such thing. I mapped out a course home in my head that included nothing but right turns. It didn't sound like fun. So I moved on to trying to FIX the problem.

I'm a good American, you see. I was once told that if an English person and an American both encountered a broken elevator, the English person would wait for someone to come help, while the American would try to fix it. I'm a good American. So with some work I managed to screw the lever back in place. I tested it. I turned the signal off. I turned it on again. I toggled the lever back and forth for a while. It worked, and it didn't fall off again. It seemed pretty stable.

If I were better at reading foreshadowing, I would have driven home and ended the adventure right there. Watch some Supernatural, eat some ice cream, leave the gym for a day with better portents. 

But I was gonna get to the gym, dammit!

I drove home. The blinker worked just fine. I went inside, had a piece of toast because the adventure was making me hungry, and looked up where the place really was. Turns out the 1400 block is closer to 24th street than 14th. All right. That doesn't make any sense to me, but at least now I know for sure where I'm going. Plus, this time I'll bring the phone WITH me in case I get mixed up again. I'm so smart!

I go back to the car. I start the car. I start down our long driveway.

The engine stops.

I put on the brake so I don't go careening down the driveway into the blackberry bushes, and I try to start it again.

It growls. Then it stops growling. It never catches.

Okay. Well, stopped halfway down a long steep driveway, blocking it completely, is a bad place to be. Maybe I can coast down, turn onto the road, and park there where it's level and I won't be in the way.

In neutral. Brake off. Coasting.

Stopping.

Cause naturally, the driveway goes UP at the very end, right before you get to the road. I got enough momentum to get my nose into the road, right in the way of everybody. Not enough to get the rest of me up there.

Reverse.

Coasting back into the little dip of the driveway right before the road. Okay. Safe now. But still blocking the driveway. And look at this, here comes Mrs. Macy, the mortician's wife, in her van, wanting to get down the driveway to the road. Sorry, Mrs. Macy, I guess you can't get out today.

I explain what happened, and I call my brother. He's in the house, still asleep.

"My car's stuck in the driveway, wanna come join the party?"

"YES."

He's a good brother.

He gets some shoes and comes out, and through our combined efforts, we manage to push the car up into the road and to the side to park it.

The point where I'm pushing a big metal death trap boat of a car with one arm, while working the non-power steering wheel with the other, is about the point where I decide I won't be going to the gym today. Even if I could get there, this has been workout enough for a while.

WE PARK THE CAR! ALLELUIA!

Mrs. Macy leaves, and I call Triple A. They're very nice and easy to work with, and my dad has suggested a mechanic already so I can tell them where I want the car to go. A very nice old man with a red tow truck arrives, and dear Diane gets lifted up onto the bed of the truck and gets to go for a ride to the mechanic who will hopefully make her all better (although I'm still in suspense about that; they haven't called me yet).

Just as he's about to drive off, I get a text message from Triple A. "Change in ETA. Your tow truck will arrive at approximately 12:30 pm."

But it was only 12:00 now, and the tow truck was clearly already here. Maybe the mechanic sent a truck too? 

"No, Triple A sent me," said the nice guy. 

"Huh, they just sent me a text to say you won't be here for half an hour!"

"I dunno, I told them ten or fifteen minutes."

We shrugged and laughed and he drove away with my baby car.

I called Triple A just to make sure they hadn't sent two trucks, but they said it was all okay, so I came back to the house and started writing this post. Halfway through it, I heard the rumble of a large engine outside. Uh oh. A minute later my phone rang.

"Hey, Triple A sent me, but I'm not sure about the address, I think I'm there but I don't see a car here . . . ."

So yes, yes indeed, they HAD sent two trucks, so I had to explain that somebody else already had the car. This guy was very very nice too, and said it was no problem, he was just glad everything was safe and taken care of. So basically my takeaway from all of this is that tow truck drivers are pretty much the nicest people in the world. It's a good thing to learn!

So, in conclusion: Diane's in the car hospital now. Hopefully I'll be hearing what the matter is soon. And meanwhile, I'm very sorry I didn't make it to the gym today . . . . but I'm not gonna stress it. I'm gonna watch Supernatural and eat ice cream instead. Pretty sure I've earned it, don't you think?

Nobody told me getting to be STRONG would require so much dealing with PEOPLE. If I actually get out of the house this morning and go talk to the people at the gym so they'll let me USE the gym, do I get to spend the rest of the day watching Supernatural?

Today I went TO THE GYM.

It was scary.

Like, I exercise and stuff, but I got the impression that only SUPER INTENSE PEOPLE go TO THE GYM to exercise. Even though I know lots of nice people who go TO THE GYM just cause it's nice and there's equipment and stuff there?

So I was scared of all the people at the gym and I didn't know what to do with all the things they had there but Devynn showed me! And it was nice and we're gonna go again and maybe do it regular and it won't be scary anymore! And then I will be a person who goes TO THE GYM.

D --> And then I will get STRONG!
