"Natalie Wood in a silk robe, laughing on the sofa, the taste of expensive chocolate and the scent of sophistication. You were, on your best day, a James Dean wanna-be in ripped jeans, leaning against a weather-worn wall, the smell of cheap beer."
excerpt from The Midnight Library, by Era Blaise
woops didn't realize that making up a ballroom dance choreography would cause dizziness and gassiness
my tummy and head were not ready for this
Psychiatric Ward Gothic
1. You arrive on the ward. There are no doctors there. You ask the nurses who you should report to. They tell you that there are no doctors on the ward. You stare at each other. You leave the ward.
2. Your senior makes a throwaway comment about it being the age of Pisces as you leave to assess a patient. You now know everyone’s star sign. You note that the ward is going to pieces.
3. You are introduced as The Medical Doctor. You have only had your degree for one year. Your senior asks you for a medical consult. You scream internally and try to not kill anyone.
4. Everyone on the ward - the patients, yourself, your seniors, and the nursing staff - Everyone has had a Mental State Exam performed on them. You spend hours trying to match the right MSE to the right person.
5. You and your team watch the entirety of Neon Genesis Evangelion together across two shifts. You discuss the ending. You disagree on the ending. You agree that every character in the show needs therapy. You all need therapy.
6. Your senior hands you an ECG for a patient who is taking antipsychotics. The QT interval is prolonged. You stop the antipsychotic. The QT interval normalizes. Your senior asks for a cardiology consult.
7. Your senior hands you an ECG for a patient who is taking antipsychotics. The QT interval is prolonged. You stop the antipsychotic. The QT interval normalizes. Your patient is staring at walls and talking to curtains again.
8. Your patient tells you that the country is going to hell in a basket and you agree with him. He wants to trade places with you. You consider this, briefly.
9. Your patient has had enough sedatives to take out an elephant and somehow is still walking on! his! own goddamned! two feet! and trying to throw hands with anyone who approaches. There is an unconscious elephant in the corner of the room.
10. You use the containment room on the ward to destress. No one can hear you scream in here anyway. “You need therapy, doc, the ward is going to pieces” a patient tells you. There are no doctors on the ward. You leave the ward.
Okay listen listen listen
Two of my four main protagonists from my book are amazing girls right
Love these two
You’ve got Jessamine, the hyper scientist with the ability to bend reality who is more interested in science than her own powers
Tilan, a warrior from childhood with huge bird wings and a gaze that makes lifelong warriors wither and back down, she can kill monsters that usually take five people.
And together what are they? An adorable, flirty, disaster couple that within two days of knowing the both of them, the third of the four protagonists, Marte, is already feeling like he’s third wheeling on his own quest.
Like Tilan gets this soft fond look when she’s with Jessamine, she’s so gentle with Jessamine but she’s firm bc sometimes Jessamine won’t listen to reason and someone has to convince her.
And Jessamine just wants to share the world with Tilan, all her discoveries and her theories on why Shadow’s blood has healing and life-giving properties, and why she thinks time works the way it does and how certain chemicals react. Jessamine wants to share every discovery with Tilan.
And honestly? Tilan wasn’t remotely interested in science or how the world worked until Jessamine came into her life. And now she can’t think of anything more fascinating than listening to Jessamine explain her latest experiment
And Jessamine was never particularly interested in the art of fighting but wow Tilan is so skilled with her spear and moves so fluidly with her team. It’s as if Tilan knows what will happen in a fight before it does. It’s beautiful.
Y’all wanna know the best part? When I first wrote them, they weren’t supposed to fall in love. But then I wrote two pages of them interacting and they just... they were in love. It fit so well. Still does. And I love them.
You're like cigarettes, darling.
It's been years, but sometimes, I still get a craving for you.
I've loved you once and thought I've stopped - but turns out having loved someone means they'll haunt your soul till the end of time.
A Cosmic Exchange
It was the trip of a lifetime yet all I could think of was how I wish I could have stayed home. I was not afraid – there was nothing to be afraid of. I sat on the bus with the clear knowledge that this trip would happen with no real contribution on my part besides having to be there. But I felt something that I could not describe – it was a cold, numb feeling of nothingness and not even the summer heat of the Italian countryside could make my soul feel warmth. There was a general feeling of happiness and excitement all over the bus. We were a group of teenagers anxious about going to a country none of us had ever been to. But all I could think of was a love I didn’t have before, a love I felt I have lost although it never was mine. Have you ever loved without having someone to love?
I’m so scared of hurting others I tear myself apart instead.
