the blisters in her boots and the soreness in her legs wholeheartedly agree with wil's suggestion, promising respite, a salve, a solution to the incredible ache they both must feel... but hypatia and her stubborn nature, her determination to avoid demonstrating obvious signs of weakness, fight hard against the sound advice. more steps forward. more grass and dirt crunched beneath her feet; more land, explored... they can't stop. they shouldn't. not now. even if wil makes a valid point, the herald can hear scathing lectures in her ear and feel the disapproving stare of her mother. wil might not know this about her yet — wil barely knows anything about the herald right now, but with time, they'll learn. they're bound to see. "your farm is close," hypatia says at last, voice rougher than usual as she turns to find the elf right behind her. "we're better off stopping there than anywhere else out here, unless we want to risk the bears and bandits. i'd feel more comfortable in a barn or house." of course hypatia's analysis of wil's recommendation is utterly dishonest — the elf, wise and kind, strong with magic and steadied by their overall expertise, only means a momentary pause to breathe, to rest, but hypatia can't take even the slightest delay. they're close to wil's farm, to good food, healing herbs, and safety. if she can guarantee their swift arrival, she will, blisters be damned. he's not quite sure how they even got on the topic — parents, families. it was a tough spot for lucien. his mother loved him. his fathers and brothers? not so much. he left their court to go to another, a place where he thought he'd spend the rest of his days. and then amarantha. and then feyre. it seemed the spring court was no place for him either, nor the night court. where was he supposed to go? we all have scars. their soft voice makes him chuckle as tanned fingers raise to run over his own, clear on his face. “ yes, but most people are lucky to escape with mental scars rather than physical ones. and even then, most get to cover theirs with clothing. ” he used to be pretty self conscious about the whole thing, but once people learned who gave him the scar, they congratulated him. funny.

his metal eye whirs as he looks down at the array before him, choosing to focus his attention on the rather delicious looking strawberry cake @eraisa brought. “ how did you know strawberry was my favorite? ” he asks, looking up at them and scrunching his nose. “ very kind of you. thank you. now, shall we? i didn't invite you out here just for you to watch me eat, you know. ”

you should've died from those injuries. he's not quite sure how he found this charming little place, or how he's ended up drinking tea from some delicate china with what he assumes are flowers hand - painted on, or how he's eating vanilla cake with a high fae with an unknown court affiliation. he should probably go, he knows azriel will likely be panicking and that cassian will be teasing him, but . . . perhaps if they knew how much he was enjoying his tea, or how much he was enjoying sharing his stories with them and hearing theirs in return.

“ you're right, i should have. ” he says rather nonchalantly, looking up at @eraisa as he sets his teacup down. “ but i was young. i thought i had something to prove. and maybe i did — maybe it kept me alive. ” rhysand shrugs, grinning across the table at them. “ in the end, it barely even left a scar. now, for that, i'm grateful. not everyone wants a reminder of how stupid they were in their thirties! ” he shudders, mostly for effect. “ now, your turn. where were you during the war? ” cauldron, what if they weren't even born yet? he felt old.
