Chocolate USA · All Jets Are Gonna Fail Today / Bar/None

“Rock'n'roll has to be loud because I do understand they play in large places and it has to be loud.” So states Marie Caso, Julian Koster’s grandmother and the narrative voice that threads through Chocolate’s debut label release. So, turn it up and enjoy the noise — there's all sorts of noise to be listened to here. This is a musical journey through the land of sound bytes and exaggerations including extremes in music from jazz fusion (sort of...) to King Missilian “Sensitive Artist” meanderings (sort of...) through teen disillusionment with relationships, as well as with oneself. The “self” in the songs is Koster, who writes, sings, and plays with wit and wry humor and, along with Liza Wakeman’s Celtic, searing violin playing, carries irony to new heights. Koster wrote it all, except “The Feelies Show” (which I got to see — Ybor City, Masquerade Club — at a very young age deep in the heart of Tampa). Now, the band makes Athens its home... for the time being. Somehow the Bar/None folks discovered that this eccentric group of folks would fit in quite nicely with the label's back catalogue of They Might Be Giants, Drink Me, Freedy Johnson, and, well, Shrimp Boat. To tell you about the lyrics would be a disservice — you should decipher them for yourself though I will say anyone that can write a song about two dogs, crazy glue, and falling in love is definitely looking at the world in a... um... unique way. Oh, there are also songs about falling off buildings, face washing, and Doogie Howser. All the while each cut, track, piece, byte, what have you, is separated by amusing little bits of conversation by Grandma as well as other musical ditties. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Local music takes off in the soaring ‘All Jets’

The sky’s the limit for musician/showman Julian Koster and his changing cast of bandmates.

The much delayed ‘All Jets Are Gonna Fall Today’ is rife with fragmented genius, nervous energy and a creative vibe so powerful, it could send shivers down a spine of stainless steel. All this, stapled together not so haphazardly by narration from band leader Julian Koster’s grandmother, adds up to the sum of one superb album.

A motley assortment of 16 contributors under the Miss America moniker, including a host of Tampa Bay talent such as folk singer Maggie Council, appear on 'All Jets'. The crew textures songs with many a studio prank. Subliminal gibberish, yummy harmonies and layers of instrumentation that sometime lapse into shameless overproduction, spice up songs. French horn on '100 Feet Tall' makes a good song more emotional. Dynamic drums, piano and violin flesh out many others.

It takes a vision like Koster's, eyes glazed over with dreamy looks, to coordinate all this hodgepodge into something cohesive.

Oddly, one of 'All Jets' most tender moments does not belong to Koster; 'The Feelies Show', penned and sung by one-time Miss America guitarist Erick Morrison, aches with longing.

Koster’s songwriting runs the gamut of oddball subject matter but usually pertains to two of his fetishes: bathtubs and airplanes. His little boy charm likens him to Jonathan Richman, but peculiar lyrics hint more of Robyn Hitchcock.

Miss America is the band that perked up the ears of people who normally don’t give a hoot about local music. 'All Jets' has some explanations. It is an album that boasts both snippets and excess; it is as exhausting as it is engaging.
