Late Night Episode releases new video “Golden Age”!

New York alt-rock band Late Night Episode has released the video for their new single Golden Age! The new track is off their upcoming EP and is set to be added to Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist and featured on Sirius XM’s Alt-Nation. “I had the lyrics for the hook of ‘Golden Age’ written for a while before the instrumental came along” reveals lead singer Daniel Lonner. “I wanted to remind people that even though the internet is a wonderful world of its own, 2017 is the most opportune time to be alive and to live, you have to get out and do shit”. The new video follows the band’s adventures around New York City in an old convertible, giving it a nostalgic home movie aesthetic. “As for the making of the music video, we worked with our homie Patrick Golan to create the visual, which was shot on 16mm film” Lonner notes. “We wanted to capture the beauty of the places we hang out and grew up”.

Late Night Episode was formed in New York City’s East Village neighborhood by Lonner and guitarist Eric Sherman. Brett Daniel (drums) and Giovanni Stockton-Rossini (bass) would later join to complete the band’s line-up of stellar musicians and songwriters. Golden Age is the band’s third single release, following Talk About Love and Swim, which were also accompanied by a third release of an acoustic demo of Lost In Cali. The singles garnered enough buzz to catch the attention producers Shep Goodman and Aaron Accetta of Dirty Canvas (American Authors, Young Rising Sons) who signed the band in late 2016.  Billboard has praised their signature version of “rowdy rock,” and the group has drawn comparisons to artists like Kings of Leon. Late Night Episode is not only crossing the genres of rock and pop through their own music, but has expanded into other realms, having executive produced Topaz Jones‘ critically acclaimed soul-funk record Arcade. TNA has sure-fire strategy to right the ship

That strategy is: Hire a media executive with no background in wrestling!

Yesterday the company announced via press release that it’s hired Eric Sherman - a former MTV Networks executive and Fuse TV president - to be the new “chief strategy officer” for TNA. Here’s the text of the release:

Eric Sherman has been named Chief Strategy Officer for TNA Entertainment effective immediately. Sherman is an accomplished media and entertainment executive who served more than 20 years with MTV Networks overseeing VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul and Palladia, served as president of Fuse TV and most recently was CEO of Veria Living, a health and wellness network. Sherman also has served as a talent manager for artists such as Steven Tyler, securing his deal to judge American Idol. In his role as Chief Strategy Officer, Sherman will develop, coordinate and oversee implementation of global strategic initiatives in advancement of TNA and its affiliated brands and properties.  

“As we celebrate our 13 year anniversary, TNA, with the incredible support of our fans, has been cultivated into a robust diverse global business poised for significant growth,” said TNA President Dixie Carter. “Eric’s depth of experience in television, digital media and talent management undergirds his capacity to organize and lead teams in the development and implementation of vision-fulfilling strategies. We are delighted to have him join the TNA family.”

"I'm thrilled to be joining a company experiencing record international growth with content seen in more than 120 countries,” said Sherman. “There is a bright future for TNA on traditional and emerging platforms, and I'm excited to join Dixie’s executive team as head of strategy."

Sherman, a resident of New York City, will split his time between his office there and the TNA Headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

If you come from the media industry, this may remind you of other ailing properties’ attempts to bring in an outsider in an effort to shake up the institutional culture. Perhaps if, like me, you worked in newspapers, you recall the dread name Lee Abrams, a former radio executive and Ron Jeremy lookalike who was brought in as a top-level executive to bring a “rock ‘n’ roll” feel to the news. After a serious of memos that functioned as magnificently ruthless parodies of corporate cool, Abrams was fired, and Tribune filed for bankruptcy.

It’s possible that Sherman may be coming aboard simply to help TNA negotiate a TV deal with a new partner, although God knows who’d want TNA at this point: so much has been done to devalue them from Day One that it’s honestly incredible they’ve lasted 13 years. 

It’s hard to say exactly what the plan is, or what a “chief strategy officer” does; Dixie’s quote is basically a public relations Mad Lib (”robust”; “diverse”; “global”; “vision-fulfilling strategies”; I work in PR and this makes me roll my eyes) rather than a coherent statement from an actual human being. The only thing that seems safe to say is that a new corporate executive is unlikely to bring in large numbers of new fans for the product.
