Monday, December 7: Only Living Witness, “December”
Although “December” was beloved enough that Shadows Fall reverently covered it for their Fallout from the War compilation, the final track on Only Living Witness’ debut still should’ve transcended its ultimate status as a Boston-area favorite. It wasn’t just that the track- or Only Living Witness in general- was underrated, because this was simply one of the best tunes to come out of the mid ‘90s metal underground. “December” fit the times thanks to Craig Silverman’s chunky riffs and Eric Stevenson’s thick drumming, but it also had an unerring sense of craft, was incredibly well-paced, and Jonah Jenkins’ towering vocals were absolutely timeless. It was heavy and unmistakably metal, but also thoughtful and very accessible; the song acknowledged mid ‘90s trends without bowing down to them, and proved that Only Living Witness was doing their own thing, and doing so brilliantly. Brian Fair wrote glowingly of the band in his notes for Fallout from the War, and he was absolutely right in singling out Only Living Witness as one of the great bands of their time, as well as a trailblazing act in the Massachusetts metal scene.

In researching the Billings’ murder case—one of the biggest and highest profile cases in Pensacola—it became apparent to me that corruption in the government, the “Good Ole Boy” (GOB) system of governmental cronyism is not reserved for just the politicians. One of the most audacious aspects of this case is the lack of journalistic integrity and “stick-to-tiveness” that is exhibited by the…
