Ballerina (2016)
I have a question involving the Weinstein Company that I’d like some opinions on...
On August 25th, 2017, the Weinstein Company publicly released the American dub of the French Canadian film, ‘Ballerina’. They released it under the title, ‘Leap!’, likely to make it more appealing to a wider audience.
Before the situation involving Harvey Weinstein, I was fully intending on owning my own copy of Leap! to go with my copy of its original English dub, Ballerina. I personally think both English dubs have their strengths, despite their own respective weaknesses (I even think Nat Wolff was a better Victor than Dane DeHann, who sounded more like a grown man than an 11 or 12 year old).
So with that said, while my money wouldn’t be going to Harvey himself, I still feel this reluctance to invest in it, like I’d wanted to before recent events. I’m glad the Weinstein Company fired him after the fact, but on the other hand, I’d hate to invest in a product that could be condoning terrible behavior.
Thankfully, Ballerina’s origins aren’t even with this group. It’s with Gaumont and L’atelier Animation (not a bad film for the latter’s first try by the way), with Eric Summer and Eric Warin as its directors. I’d hate for them and their cast and crew to suffer because of someone else’s stupidity. So my question is this:
Do I invest in this version that I actually do like and forgive, knowing the money won’t go to the man in question?
Or do I just stick with the Ballerina version, despite the 2 or 3 issues the Leap! dub actually fixed (in my opinion)?
I just want to do the right thing. Honest, constructive comments are always welcomed.
