March Rapidfire Reviews
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me // Mariko Tamaki
4.5/5 graphic novel about Freddy Riley and her toxic relationship with the most popular girl in school, the advice column acts as a framing device so info is largely conveyed through inner monolog rather than the live interactions, cute art style and a good look into trouble of teen relationships, very queer exactly in the way i like its a nice little time
possible tw: toxic relationships, teen pregnancy, abortion, teenagers getting with legal adults
Hollow Kingdom // Kira Jane Buxton
2.5/5 a domesticated crow and dog work together to navigate seattle after the zombie apocalypse, couldn't really get into it as a book but the audiobook makes it better, you can tell it thinks its funny but i dont quite buy it all the time, can image it as an animated animal movie along the lines of Rats of NIHM or Watership Down, "screens are evil and thats why we're zombies" doesnt really land in a post pandemic world and i'm kinda tired of this theme in plots, really jumps the shark at the end i was getting into it and then... why
possible tw: gore & body horror (mutation & mutilation), language, nature doc style animal violence & death (including dog),
Gender Queer // Maia Kobabe
5/5 graphic novel memoir of the author realizing ey're ace & gender queer, god this was good, i couldn't relate to all of it because not all of eir experiences matched with mine but god did i relate hard to what did, there's so many books and texts Kobabe refferences in here you want to write them down to read later i love it, i'm glad i bought this one i want to keep it with me this is going to be one of my forever books that i read at exactly the right time
possible tw: dysphoria (the worst moments are tied to periods and pap smears), nudity, internal conflicts on gender & pronouns & asking people to respect your pronouns & sexuality, sexual situations & depictions
The Book Thief // Mark Zusak
4.5/5 death narrates the story of a book thief in Nazi Germany, was not looking forward to this one bc wwii is so bleak and it's difficult to get through something thats only suffering especially because this is real and it happened, also as an american in 2021 i hate reading about nazis because theyre fucking BACK so everything feels stupidly familiar and i hate it, i cried so much like i knew i would oof this thing, cant spoil it bc they say everything from the beginning but oof 4 characters survive and it's gut wrenching
possible tw: basically everything relating to nazis & WWII (camps are briefly discussed but it's mostly outside problems), character deaths, child character deaths, bombings, blackface (it's kinda innocent?), suicide, war & war injuries,
My Androgynous Boyfriend Vol 1 // Tamekou
4.5/5 cute slice of life manga about a stereotypical working girl & her cute instagram model boyfriend, it's fucking adorable absolutely sickening i love everything about this its so cute, this straight couple says fuck gender roles and it's pretty great, good emotion fix after book thief thank god
Punching the Air // Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salaam
5/5 YA novel in verse telling the story of a black boy who has been wrongfully imprisoned, the delivery of it in verse does make the emotions hit harder its very well done, a lot of the topics in here are along the same lines as nonfiction stuff for adults like "the new jim crow" so its a good way to introduce points for a discussion on prison reform/abolition to a younger audience,
possible tw: topics relating to race & the american prison system, refferences to slavery,
I am not your Perfect Mexican Daughter // Ericka Sánchez
3/5 a girl is thrust into an unwanted spotlight after her perfect older sister's sudden death, i havent seen Ladybird but this book seems to go along similar lines, main character's "imperfection" is basically her whole character like i know its the uglyness of mental illness but it is not a fun headspace to live in, so many sexual harassment scenes and theyre not even plot relevant theyre just there, as a gay i cant ever really get the "you've got to forgive your parents shitty behavior bc of what theyve gone through" but its not too egregious here like i've seen worse
possible tw: death of a sibling/child, brief & skippable mentions of pedophilia that goes unaddressed by adults, drug use/alcohol consumption, shitty parents just in general, sexual harassment, failed suicide attempt, somewhat graphic animal death (for cooking), reference to a past rape, talk about abortion

The deal with Dimension X-244: The whole main cast was born the opposite sex than their originals. I might make some art for the rest of the family later on!
