It's finally here... Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 6: Sing Gently
EricWhitacre has blessed us again with his music - Sing Gently, during this difficult time we're facing in the world. As a returning virtual choir member (VC4 Alumnus), I was so surprised that I finally got featured in his videos for the first time..ever! #MyProudMoment..😁!!
This was so wonderful to see the premiere of the official video. What a beautiful display of the idea that we may be scattered like broken pieces, but one day, we'll come together and "sing gently as one"... #SoBeautiful. I'm so glad to be part of this experience once again and to be part of the 17 572 singers representing South Africa.
Thank you, Eric Whitacre, for doing this again and being an inspiration to us all choral music lovers. After 10 years of virtual choir projects, you still continue to amaze us with your music, and to unite us all once again, making this your biggest choir family... Can't wait for the next project (hopefully...)

It's very time consuming to change pitch on every note, calculating the harmonically-tuned frequency of every chord member based off the root (except where a note hung over from a previous chord, in which case I based everything off of that), so I didn't go the whole way through. It created a clicking noise at the start and end of every pitch change, so you can easily hear how far I got. Also, it seems that when I highlight a note's wave signal it senses the overall pitch for the entire selection, so when I adjust it I adjust the entire selection by the same amount, so if my pitch varied before, it still varies after, so not all chords are solid all the way through. Perhaps I'll export all the tracks and see what I can do with them in Pro Tools First. #soundediting #Audacity #DAW #EricWhitacre #Sleep #clarinet #multitrack #recording https://www.instagram.com/p/CB_bve2gmcO/?igshid=1g7uxiva5n8nt
Back in the office today. By office I mean Doutor (coffee chain) with cheap coffee I’m addicted too. It’s crazy how my productivity goes up 1000x when I’m here downing coffee vs. working at home. Here’s a toast to being a Coffee Shop Nomad and #CautiousHopeAtReturningToNormalLife.
Today’s task is (silently) absorbing Sing Gently from Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir. It’s a beautiful piece. Any other singers out there participating? For those interested in joining you have to submit your video by May 22 and you can find out more info here. I’m cutting my deadline close (exactly what they asked not to do) but what did I say about productivity and working from home vs. the coffee shop?
Been a long time coming, so proud to have been a part of these recordings! #nycos #ericwhitacre #jamesmacmillan #rsno https://www.instagram.com/p/B6IjEeLJN_lcoFbD-sV8NNMSY0BduT1krgftAY0/?igshid=1owr4h1yibae8
With vocal and choral music, first and foremost, it's the text. Not only do I need to serve the text, but the text - when I'm doing it right - acts as the perfect 'blueprint', and all the architecture is there. The poet has done the heavy lifting, so my job is to find the soul of the poem and then somehow translate that into music.
