I did a thing today.
I joined Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 6.
I am officially alto number 2,943!
I stopped singing completely about 3 years ago. In 2009 I found that my voice was deteriorating rapidly, but due to lack of insurance, I wasn't able to do anything about it until I got my current teaching job (with full benefits) in 2014. By then, the damage had been done. A bad case of LPR left my vocal cords warped and scarred beyond repair. After forcing it (because the PASSION) for many years, it became physically painful and I had to step away. No more choir, no more musicals.... it was sad. Whomp whomp.
HOWEVER-- one positive point of this quarantine is that, without teaching and social obligations, my voice has had a much-needed rest. I showered, put on my favorite solid colored shirt and a bit of make-up, built a tower out of totes to record on, and gave it a whirl. Though my voice is fatigued after a morning of practicing and 9 run-throughs, I got a decent recording to submit while my daughter napped. I may never return to choirs or the stage, and performing may be done for me, but I still find joy in music when my voice cooperates. Today was good.
