I feel like some (a lot) of people brush off Erid’s gravity too easily. Like, ppl often write Grace reflecting on his arrival like, “ough, I was really going through it with the scurvy, the starvation, barely keeping conscious. oh yea, and I guess it was hard adjusting to the gravity or smth,” like it isn’t, oh I don’t know, OVER DOUBLE the gravity of Earth! It shoulda felt like a bench press weighing down on him 24/7 MINIMUM when he’s trying to get used to this!

Bloodymary fanfics that have Simon automatically teleport to the planet for one reason or another are esp guilty of this. Like guys, it’s DOUBLE Earth gravity! Maybe you get a pass if he’s mutated, but that’s it! Idc how strong he is, even if he was in PEAK health (which you better effing not!), he is gonna struggle to lift his body even an inch off the ground!

i think gender becomes a fad on erid after grace shows up. it’s not an entirely foreign concept, there are animals on erid that have more than one sex, but grace is a sentient being who can describe his experiences with gender to them and a lot of eridians find that Very interesting. at first, there’s a ton of eridians identifying as male — not only is grace a man, but he uses masculine pronouns for rocky, so being a man means you’re like both of the saviors!! shortly after comes the countercultural wave of female-identifying eridians, followed by the ones who identify as nonbinary but in a ‘human’ way. of course, their ideas of what to do about gender — pronouns, presentation, etc. — are WILDLY different from human gender expression.

Guys a decade of eridian years is (approx) 420 earth days. Maybe I'm sleep deprived cause it's 6 am and I haven't been able to sleep all night but I find this far too funny

so i had the idea that it would be cool if the eridians had a constellation named after grace which included the sun, so i looked up a model for where the sun would be from erid's perspective (which i found here) and made a constellation!

I got bit by the speculative biology bug after reading Project Hail Mary and have spent the past two months trying to imagine the critters that live on Erid!

Or at least that's how it started out...In order to design creatures, I decided I needed to work backwards with info in Mr. Weir's Erid lore doc to come up with organisms and systems that could've plausibly* led to the evolution of Eridians from an Astrophage seeding event. So what had started as a character design exercise turned into me spending nights puzzling how the initial airborne life of Erid would deal with high parasite loads, or which circumstances would lead to the evolution of steam-powered muscles.

So now, two months later, I present: a possible evolutionary history of life on Erid, a general map of the elevation/depth of the planet's ecosystems, and a handful of critters that would belong to the suggested clades! I could yap forever about these guys and other evolutionary possibilities, but I think for now I'll stick with this. Maybe I'll revisit and design some more critters in the future!
