a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:

NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.

Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.

YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.

DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.

SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.

As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.

adding to this. the probabilistic framing is great but there’s another layer: fiction is working under serious time and space constraints. grief in real life might look like eating cereal at 11pm and forgetting to answer texts for a week. you don’t always have a week. so characters end up doing things that are statistically rare but emotionally efficient, and that’s not bad writing, that’s compression. the name-dropping dialogue thing is still a crutch though, because it’s not compressing anything, it’s just substituting for actual voice work. heightened behavior = often necessary. heightened language = usually lazy.

I get what the last bit is trying to say, I think, about name dropping, but in my experience as a comic artist if you don’t drop character names a little more often than is realistic people will just call characters things like “sword guy” and “redhead” in your comment section constantly

While trying not to fall asleep, I wanted to do a testsketch of Ryland Grace from "Project Hail Mary" aaand got carried away... 😅

I didn't pay attention to the materials, and the lines were smudged by the alcohol markers🫠 and, of course: right in his face. I have limited colours, so I didn't want to use his face further as colour tester XD

For my lack of experience and practice in traditional art, the outcome is pretty good in my books👎🏻

I'm proud of his hair 🤣

Simon would probably do it first. Not because Ryland doesn’t trust Simon, but because Mr “didn’t tell Rocky he’s going to die when this is all over for a long time to not make him sad” isn’t going to burden the man they found covered in blood with his problem. Ryland is surprised when he realizes what Simon wants, but steps up. He grabs his quilt and wraps it over his shoulders.

when Ryland needs comfort, he’s a lot more reluctant. Yet, Simon is pretty good at reading people (you know, from cult experience) and realizes what Ryland needs. Ryland is pretty surprised how good at comforting Simon is.

I really want people to explore disabled Grace as well.

In bloodymary I see a lot of focus on Simon being an amputee, which I LOVE, and I see a lot of neurodivergent Grace, but I feel like a lot of people forget that long term comas can have a lot of physical affects such as atrophied muscles, joint confractures, severe bone density, ect. The change in gravity on Erid would also worsen these affects.

Not to mention permanent mental affects like poor memory and lack of focus. Personally, I like the idea of Grace maybe using mobility aids such as forearm crutches, KAFO's, or wheelchairs. But of course, these are all just ideas and reminders, and everyone is welcome to portray these two however they so choose. Just food for thought :)

(PS: I have chronic pain but I don't use mobility aids, so if any of my information is off, please feel free to let me know and I will edit this post accordingly. Also feel free to comment or reblog to expand on these ideas if you want!)

I think that there should be more content in which Simon knows about Carl (it could be in any AU really). Like maybe in father's day or something Grace breaks in laughs saying that he remember celebrating it with Carl, with who he had a kid, Simon is there having hundred of questions passing through his mind: Is Grace a dad? how is he a dad?did he left his kid?, just for Grace to see his confusion and explain that Carl was a...friend he had back in the Petrova Task Force, who helped him to create the first earthy astrophage.

Grace then feeling nostalgic talks a lot about Carl and all the things they did together, and Simon feels jealous of this unknown man, just to then hate him for not defending Grace in the end.

Carl would be the origin of a lot of self-doubt for Simon -specially is they are in alone in Erid or space, instead that an AU in earth- because he thought that Grace didn't have anything with which compare his weird relationship with Simon, but now he knows that Grace actually have a person to which compare him, or at least someone who Simon thinks Grace compare him with. This would lead to Simon feeling conscious of his new state as an amputee, his mutations and his general social awkwardness. Carl, at least for Grace, was a super cool guy, collected, calm, funny, things that Simon hmself doesn't consider himself.

Extra:

Rocky - who did not know Carl more than Simon, but likes to mess up with Simon once he notice the jealousy and with Grace just because he can- would say things like "Carl would go to sleep his eight human hours", "Carl would have eat all his tau-veggies","Carl would have never kick Rocky's ball".

I think that in a AU in earth it would be funny if Grace never does nor explain the joke about him and Carl been parents, and just tells Simon he is a friend from work, and in the end Simon, after forming a picture of a perfect Carl in his mind, realizes that he may actually knows Carl from one of his jobs (security or somethins), but he is not sure, Carl is a common name after all, so he tries to ask subtlely if he knows someone called Grace, or something and Carl, dead serious just answers: "I haven't pay him our kid's support for months."
