Natasha could find many reasons to disdain the early morning shift at the hospital: everyone was grouchy, they were always out of coffee, the pastries and breakfast options in the lounges always tasted a week old, and the patients always seemed more impatient at that hour. There were many wonderful upsides to it, however, and most of them came along the walk to work. Whenever possible, Natasha preferred to walk, even if it might take another hour or more out of her day. There was just something so peaceful about the stroll from Point A to Point B, and despite the slower transport, she never felt delayed or in a rush. Especially not on these early mornings when it was just past dawn and everything was painted in a beautiful golden hue.

As she passed by a paper boy, the younger sibling of an old friend, she tossed him a wink and a wave that was met with an amusingly groggy nod. Even with little sleep behind her from the night before, she was still able to smile as brightly as any other day. It just seemed impossible not to when the sky was looking to be so clear that day and she was certain that this was going to be a good day at work. Well, as good as any day at the hospital could be. She was only in her second year of her residency and already she felt as though she’d seen more in the town’s hospital than she ever would have expected to see in her entire career. The late night accidents, the mysterious illnesses, and the bizarre things that always seemed to occur on the nights of full moons. Even prior to desiring any career in the medical field, Natasha had always observed people acting strangely on those nights. Once she began to work at the hospital, however, she came to realize just how strange people could be when the moon was fully visible.

Still, she smiled. She smiled as she walked to work just like she smiled at at the hospital just as she had smiled all through her years in college and medical school. Criticism made that bright smile falter more frequently than she liked to admit, but there was always her mother to call or visit at the end of the day who could give her comfort, advice, and, best of all, a promise to send some food Natasha’s way. The girl always knew that there was a little something extra special in the food, and sometimes she felt almost slighted by the fact she couldn’t make it on her own. It would only take a few moments of reading through the latest bookmarked medical journal article for her to realize there was enough else in her life, enough else she could do to help others and herself, for her to live a wonderful life without even a drop of magic in her blood.

Now the lack of magic was in question, though. Tucked deep into her backpack, beneath a change of clothes and some little plastic containers of House of Curry leftovers, were a couple word search booklets she was nearly done with. Sudoku, word searches, crosswords, number games, any type of activity like that had always been the most appealing way to bide time for Natasha. Even on days when she’d been in the library studying for hours on end, she still took a pencil or pen (only when she was feeling very confident) to paper to help relax. Her parents loved to indulge the habit on holidays and give her brand new stacks of booklets, but lately they didn’t even require any special occasion. Family has always been important to Natasha, both because of how willing she is to help them, and how willing her parents are to help her. When she started to notice some oddities in her life and her own behavior, her parents were the first people she went to with questions they were both eager to help her find the answers to.

It was not until a bit of blue began to break up the golden sheet over the town that Natasha pulled herself from her own thoughts so focused on the indescribable strangeness seeping into her life. It took a few moments for her to realize she had taken a different turn that usual, not a route she never traveled but simply one frequently untraveled. She’d left early enough that an alteration in her path didn’t concern her about punctuality. Even when she planned her commutes, she always made sure to add ample time for changes or hold-ups. After all, one never knew what might happen, even this early in the day.
