Here are four images made in Middletown along the former Erie and NYO&W back in the mid-1980s. The first image is where the Erie Railroad crossed over Genung Street. The next few pictures were made in the center of town where the Erie intermingled with the New York, Ontario & Western Railway.
It’s curious that this steam locomotive was sitting about; I’ve found some information on the engine and linked it here. The caboose is interesting too in that Warrenton was a southern railroad that closed a year after these images were made. That last shot was taken where E. Main Street crossed both railroads near a station, as far as I can tell, and I wish I’d photographed any numbers or markings on that GE 44-ton switcher.
Until I scanned these old negatives, I'd never heard of the Middletown and New Jersey Railway—as I understand it, the railroad began back on 1947 and is still extant here in town as the Middletown and New Jersey Railroad.
Four images by Richard Koenig; taken in the summer of 1984.
