LINEWORK NW 2016 (may 22nd, sunday) fantastic comics show in portland, oregon!!!
thanks to all of you who stopped by to buy my comics!!!!
At CAKE, Yeti Press premiered a collection of comics by Erik Nebel. Super strange scenes of collision and exchange play out across wordless, three panel, high gloss pages- colored like a brain test for a baby. Movement, gravity, physics- the visual clarity is total and perfect.
This balance between clarity and deep symbolic abstraction is something I think about a lot. I tend to like stuff with open symbols like this, it's clearer to me what I'm projecting on to the forms in the narrative based on whatever's going on in life, and so I feel like I can read this twenty times and have a different reading experience every time.
If you need a cultural signpost, the only comics this reminds me of are Chester Brown-"Underwater", and "qviet". It's sort of like those things, maybe, but what I love most about CAKE* is that there's a place for this book that looks and reads like nothing else in the room.
