Hey, have you been alright? You kind of disappeared
Yes, sorry for the disappearance! I am working like crazy on a bunch of comics projects that I am preparing for print. May be another year or so before I'm able to get back to my tumblr world. I miss all of you, but I will be back! Thanks for asking.
Best American Comics 2019
dear tumblr friends,
big news: my comics were chosen for BEST AMERICAN COMICS 2019.
here's an excerpt from the review on amazon:
Erik Nebel's 'Why Don't We Come Together' ingeniously explores the possibilities of a rigid format—repeating but shifting shapes and colors, figures and patterns play across a set of equal-sized panels stacked into a grid, clicking through simple, whimsical stories like a filmstrip of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis...It's called 'best' for a reason."--Kirkus
(thank you, Kirkus!)
the official site for buying the book is hmhbooks.com
thanks for spreading the word, so people know this book is out now!!!
much love,
erik
DEAD SOULS
i finished drawing my DEAD SOULS comic, which is based on the novel DEAD SOULS written by one of my favorite authors: nikolai gogol.
gogol was queer. he never had a girlfriend or a boyfriend. in his personal letters, he talked about his feelings of romantic attachment to men. i see him as a repressed gay man who grew up in an environment that made it impossible for him to be openly gay.
he spent his life wrestling with his queerness and maybe trying to hide it, but it would keep popping up in funny ways in his stories.
the characters in the novel DEAD SOULS are like cartoon characters, or caricatures, but they also seem so real. on the one hand, their behavior is silly and exaggerated, but on the other hand they’re raw human, the essence of human.
you can read the entire DEAD SOULS comic on eriknebel.tumblr.com
the first page is september 29 of 2019, and the last page is february 5 of 2019.
(1000 thanks to all of you for all the love you have poured onto my comics, i am deeply grateful.)
