i think, if i were playing carlo quinto in ernani, i would want to spend the whole opera completely playing up how stupid the plot is and how he is completely aware of the stupidity of it all. nobody recognises him because he is wearing a hat and this is hilarious to him, that sort of thing...

...up until The Exact Point at which he is completely alone on the stage, both for the first time as a character and for the first time full stop in the opera, and then try to freak the audience out with how. un-stupid and not in any way funny. that aria is. as much as possible.
