Rachel Klein did not have Rebecca (that's the only name I have for her) study vampires to hammer in Ernessa's vampire-ness.
Rebecca was mentally ill. From the very beginning, she had issues. Throughout the story, Rebecca's mental health declines as she starts losing her best friend Lucy to Ernessa. Because of this, Rebecca hates Ernessa. Rebecca demonizes Ernessa, makes her the reason why Rebecca's life goes downhill. Lucy's mental and physical health decline, which Rebecca also blames Ernessa for. As has been mentioned by many a reviewer, Rebecca learns about the vampire during the tragedies that take place around her. Rebecca latches onto the vampire, bringer of death and corrupter of virginal women, and puts Ernessa in the role. Stories of Carmilla and similar vampires fuel Rebecca's delusions. They were added to give the reader a reason for Rebecca jumping to the vampire conclusion. Nothing around Ernessa particularly screams vampire. None of the deaths appear to be vampire attacks (animal attack, falling off the roof, anorexia). But Rebecca still decides Ernessa is a vampire. Why? Because in Rebecca's mind, Ernessa is a monster. The vampire was the most recent monster Rebecca learned of.
Imagine how Ernessa was feeling during all of Rebecca's insanity.
Poor girl. It must have been so confusing, being hated and stalked and judged by someone for no reason. And Lucy! All she wanted was for her best friend to accept her girlfriend. Must have been nerve wracking for Ernessa and Lucy. They were teenagers in a relationship deemed unacceptable by many people. Lucy was probably sure Rebecca would have be fine with Lucy's lesbian tendencies, but she knew Rebecca would have been hurt that Lucy was in a relationship with someone else. Hurt and jealous. So Lucy eased tried to ease into it. But then Rebecca started losing her mind and Lucy got tired of always having to support Rebecca. Lucy started having her own problems. I'm not entirely convinced that Ernessa fed into Lucy's disease. I think that if Ernessa was anorexic and encouraging Lucy, Ernessa would have gotten sick as well. Sure she never seemed to eat, but that could be do to lots of reasons. Maybe Ernessa just hated eating around other people. I don't see two anorexics encouraging each other's disease leading to one's death while leaving the other in near perfect health. I don't think it's too far fetched to suggest that Lucy became anorexic on her own. She was seen as very attractive and was put on a pedestal as this shining example of kindness. It must have been very stressful to have to keep that up. All that combined with a lesbian relationship in a strict boarding school, psychotic best friend, and death all around her could have easily messed with her brain.
Oh, Ernessa. It must have been so hard for her when Lucy died. Ernessa was an outcast. She was not what most people would call attractive. Ernessa was also seen as strange and avoided by nearly everybody. Except Lucy. Ernessa found someone who didn't just accept her, but loved her. And that person was a beautiful and compassionate girl. If Ernessa was a lesbian or a bisexual, it must have been exhilarating to find another girl who felt the same way. When Lucy died, Ernessa was alone again. I wish I knew if things got better for Ernessa like they did for Rachel.
