The Hound of the Baskervilles premiered in New York City on 24 March 1939, before wider release in the US a week later, and a UK release in April.
At least 5 film versions had been made of Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 novel before Sidney Lanfield’s version (with a script by Ernest Pascal).
It was the first (of 14) appearance of Basli Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively.
