Figured this would be a timely post to bust up all the the rich food consumption that accompanies Christmas and over the holiday’s.

The inspiration for this making this drink originally came when I was working at a co-op a few years ago, and a fermented drink (“Fire Cider”) was introduced to the Health and Wellness department in the indigestion section. There is a sweetened and unsweetened version, but I always go for the unsweetened version, as sugar abounds in just about everything.

Since it was a new product we received a few bottles to test it out, and another few bottles so we could give sample “shots” to customers to try out-which was always fun as we witnessed how people reacted. The first time we drank it, (and every time thereafter,) even if it was just a half ounce or so, our eyes would water up and our mouth would pucker up, because it was so strong, and the reaction was often akin to this:

Equally as powerful as the outside reaction that the “Fire Cider” induced was the reaction internally. You could just feel it favorably trickling through your insides, working it’s way down, busting up whatever was stubbornly sticking in your guts, which made it a great tonic if you ate too much of the delicious offerings at the co-op hot bar, or just had a generally upset stomach.

Since Becki and I (the canine rescuer and Dr. Doolittle like wellness expert mentioned in Dog Arthritis Relief Tip’s were the only ones that could, or preferred to stomach it, we had the bottles to ourselves and would take a shot or two daily, and also Daniel from grocery would stop by on Sunday mornings where we would do a “toast” pouring a hearty shot, and involuntarily shaking our heads as a reaction. It was a great way to start the morning.

Though it’s a very effective product and the best thing I know of for a upset stomach next to Kombucha (which is also effective, but actually tastes good,) it’s not cheap by any means, (but I am) so onto the wide world of web I went in search of some recipes, and printed out this one, and though it’s been on the kitchen cabinet for over a year now, I haven’t made it yet, as the process takes a few weeks and I don’t trust not making myself sick from the fermentation process, nor have the patience, so I searched online for “cold buster drink,” and since there was no shortage of recipes that fit that search term, I went with a reliable source that hasn’t failed me yet, (OhSheGlows.com) and it’s been the recipe I’ve been using ever since, though I’ve gradually greatly upped the amount of ginger, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric since first trying it, as my tolerance for some of the ingredients in the drink has greatly increased since.

Also, when I was reading an issue of “Mother Old News,” (which was thrifted for only $.69 from a library,) I came across a similar recipe, pretty identical, (as most of these are,) and you could try that one too:

Lastly, here the version I’ve worked gradually up to now, but it’s not for the faint of mouth, so I’d start with one of the previous two recipes. I should mentioned though these don’t pack quite the mouth haymaker that “Fire Cider” does, they do work extremely well, and when you make it yourself with fresh ingredients you save a ton of money, and you can meter out the ingredients at your discretion.

Though you can finely mince or grate the ginger, I recently (actually four days ago) thrifted a mint condition micro-grater at Goodwill for only $4 and it makes a big difference, as the finer you can grind the ginger the more potent it is.

Here’s my latest version, everything organic is marked with an asterisk*, but it doesn’t have to be organic, the punch will be packed either way!

Heaping Tbsp of fresh Ginger* (Steeped in nearly boiling water, about 12 ounces, then left to sit for at least 10 minutes to cool and infuse the water).

Pour into cup, then add: 2 Tbsp strongly shaken up Apple Cider Vinegar* One freshly squeezed lemon Tsp of Turmeric Generous dash of Cayenne Pepper (1/3 tsp) Hint of Cinnamon (1/7th tsp) Smaller hint of Black Pepper (1/10th tsp)

Stir well and sip, continuing to stir before each sip or whisk well and slam, (then prepare for for the pucker then ensues).
