meeting florence elmore and why that was the worst thing to ever fucking happen

so eros and florence meet very early on and it drives a good portion of the plot afterwards right. their first interaction was pretty trivial, they meet while florence is fucking around with her new overworld friends and she and eros seem to get along and have fun banter with each other!!! shocker i know. unfortunately this is one of the only instances where this will happen because i love suffering meta-narratively

all that gets thrown out the fucking window when florence inadvertently blocks eros from completing whatever busywork task gaia handed him and oops! now he feels the need to get back at her because despite the tragedy he’s still an arrogant little man. he goes home a flop and gaia is only mildly disappointed in him at this point but brother that is about to change

we start snowballing the cycle of increasing hatred out of control and gaia starts deliberately guilt tripping eros and playing to his arrogance to spur everything on wtf!! (eros’ repeated failure threatens to punch holes in his manufactured ‘hero’ persona, and by extension, hers) so now his motive behind constantly trying to get back at florence changes from personal satisfaction to appeasing the parental figure he’s been raised to be dependent on. what was once a minor run-in has taken over his life and by the end of the second arc he feels the need to straight up kill florence but here’s the thing: he doesn’t actually want to pull the trigger AT ALL but thinks he’s in too deep to try and make amends, so the only viable option left is to get rid of her if he wants his life to have some semblance of security and normalcy again

-my most unbelievably fucked up guy yet (second only to the arbiters but we’ll get there when we get there). also the primary antagonist

-i write a bit of myself into all my characters and unfortunately he inherited all the identity issues. struggle in a can

originally ‘born’ as the lowest tier of angel, he’s spent his life as a seraph (the absolute tippity top tier) as part of a political op* by gaia who’s essentially Liquid God at this point. Solid God and Naked God peaced out a long time ago don’t worry about it haha :)

*the political op in question was gaia staging the assassination of one of her last remaining dissenters in power. eros was brought in at random as a ‘replacement’ for publicity and the people were fed a story abt how eros bravely saved gaia from being executed as well by the “murderer” when no such thing actually happened. he’s propped up as a false hero which definitely has caused some Problems

essentially his identity is manufactured for him by gaia making him useful for her to puppeteer and he’s nearly guaranteed to stay compliant because of the consequences if he doesn’t (losing the only defining trait he thinks he has, losing the parental figure he’s been trained to depend on and getting his ass sent back to the bottom of the hierarchy). problem is he’s Problems Mcgee and starts to derail everything through the sheer power of mental illness and meeting florence which makes said mental illness exponentially worse which i’ll probably make a separate post about
