The Legacy Of Hope(lessness)

I already talked at length about first episode of earthspark's special. I will be intentionally not referencing it in this post, as it ruins any possible themes you can see in what I will be talking about because of how it is written in such a fucking evil and shitty way.

Here I wanted to give some attention to the second part of it, particulary to what I liked about the thing. Not, mind you, what I found good. I think the whole thing was bad, but the last twenty minutes and some specific moments before were truly interesting, and I appreciate them, in some way. Were they good? No, not narrative-wise, not plot-wise, no at all fronts. So I understand if you are not buying it, but I still think it can be fun(?) to at least talk about them.

Without further ado, let's go.

I've got to admit, the scene of Megatron's death got me. The way in which he gets slashed with that time-backing thingy and DIES before he gets changed. I think it says something powerful. With how firm he states his change is in previous moments in the episode it just hit me. With how he told Liege Maximo before how no, it was not matrix who had changed him, it was his own doing. Without a shadow of doubt. Because he knows Optimus would not do that, I think this statement works well, and works well with his death, how he has to physically die to return to what he was, so strong is this attachement to his new self, symbolically.

The fact that he does so while protecting Optimus of course also is something that I liked, but it speaks louder when you connect it to the theme of Megatron's change. As Megatron without a doubt believes Optimus would not force him to change, he without a doubt dies for him. This just... goes hard ok.

It is also one of the only moments where Earthspark S4 cares to look any good, in my opinion.

What I also liked was the parallel we got, between Optimus/Megatron and Bumblebee/Breakdown relationships. Both being unlikely bonds between two bots of different fractions that grown to care for each other to the point of self-sacrifice. The fact that Bumblebee and Megatron both throw themselves to save their loved one in so similar way, and pay the same price is very important to me, for reasons that I will bring up later, but also because one of them is a decepticon and one of them is an autobot. It kind of shows that members of both factions are able of such action, if the thing they are driven by is the same: love and care.

I also appreciate what happened with Bumblebee and Breakdown, at the end. It is, of course, absolutely unearned after everything that happened with them in S2 and S3, but still feels somewhat significant.

The fact that Bumblebee does not remember what they have, but despite that you can already see them starting over again at the end of the special. It's like they got another chance.

The fact that Bumblebee does not have the memories is not making it impossible for them to make amends, because he is still the same person, despite it all, the person that could see a person in Breakdown, not only a decepticon.

You can see them catching the energy of each other again in the final minutes, in a moment that I genuinely find cute. Them going on an adventure, on a mission together, to get to know each other again feels somehow kathartic to me, even if I will never actually see that happening.

With that out of the way, I'm going to adress the elephant in the room. Megatron turning "evil", and why I think it's a wrong way to look at what happened.

Throughout the entire Legacy Of Hope we see this small bits of references to old Megatron. Megatron knows of Autobot's base, because he was a decepticon warlord with spies everywhere (a knowledge he utilises). Megatron knows of Liege Maximo's plan, because it was his plan, once (again, a bit of info that is helpful and that he is sure to use). Megatron earned a reputation of being untrustworthy, that is still affecting how people see him (which he accepts as fair).

All of those things show, in a way, that there is no "evil Megatron" that disappeared and was replaced by "good Megatron". He is the same person, that, without some continuity break, never ceased to exist. But a person who decided to change, which he explicitly says in the special. You see, there would be no present Megatron, if old Megatron would not decide to become him. And so, if he had decided that once, why couldn't he do that again?

Optimus upon realising Megatron's return to the past acts like he lost him again. But I don't think it is a fair assumption, and I don't think we are meant to agree with him on that note. I think it is possible that Optimus, who believed in Megatron's change, at the same time never truly understood it. For him, old and new Megatron are indeed two separate people. His defetism is not left without a respnce though.

No, he is opposed by Twitch, a bot who just mere moments ago successfuly beared and used Matrix, full of hope and fresh blood (energon? cavewater?), slightly-hinted maybe-would-be next Prime. She, contrary to Optimus, has true belief in change, a change that is a result of one's decision to change, a decision that this exact Megatron had made once already, so she knows he is capable of it.

The fact that she wants to look for him is also very dear to me with how Megatron promised to her in the first part of S4 that, as he was there to help her, he trusts she will be there to help him one day, too. It feels like Twitch wanting to fulfill that promise, in an unexpected way.

Another thing that adds depth to Megatron's regression is Bumblebee's situation that I mentioned before. The fact that he and Breakdown are the ones to help Twitch find Megatron is by no means accidental. They are the example that change is a choice, and there is no radical divide between past and present self, as regressed Bumblebee still chooses to again befriend Breakdown. The change that happened to him does not mean he can't change himself again as he once have done. If Bumblebee can do that, Why can't Megatron, his direct parallel?

Isn't it somehow beutiful that now Twitch, Megatron's daughter figure would be able to show him again the reason why he wanted to change in the first place?

I can't express how much I appreciate this ending. It feels like a blast from the past, something with the spirit of S1, something that brings back the topic of change and redemption, and how it is not impossible for anyone. There is something profound in those moments' themes, someting honest. How reeducation into a better person requires a not-so-good person to make that decision, how at the end there is no replacement of one for another at any point, rather one being a continuation, a resulf of another.

It plays well with the title to me, too. "The legacy of hope" referring to hoping that this change is a thing that can happen, a hope born out of fondness and love and perspective of new generation (represented by Twitch, perspective of the young being another important theme of S1).

It is an ugly ending, though. An absolutely unearned thing, as Megatron lost his importance in the show in S2 and S3 and became an utterly meaningless figure, his redemption as unimportant as possible, as Bumblebee and Breakdown barely seen each other since S1. It has no basis.

It also has, of course, no future, as there will be no more Earthspark. The open ending will not guide us to any more adventures.

We will not see Twitch fulfilling her promise to Megatron, nor Megatron going through his redemtion again, this time before our very eyes. We will not see Brakdown and Bee getting to know each other again.

It is an ending that does not end anything, really, being a structural disaster and leaving every question unanswered.

It is a thing with no real past to be grounded in and no future to go into. But at the same time, a thing that feels like a glimpse into a different reality, where after S1 we got something similarily interesting, something equally invested in S1's themes. A thing showing us what we could have, but never got and never will.

Is this good, that we got to see that? No, of course not. None the less I'm glad we did. I'm glad the show did not die an easy death of a dull and mediocre ending, instead finished with that weird, bad thing. I'm glad this show gave me the last chance to think something deeper about it instead.

(on the finishing note, I truly believe this ending has a great fanfiction-premise opening. So, by all means, if you found anything worth it in S4, please, write! Write all the self-indulgent things, write fix-its, write it all! Let the time spent with this show not be wasted!)

Been playing TL:LTD all day, having lots of fun.

I put swindle on the island for the sake of Swinbee, and then Twitch wanted to make friends with him, and because Swindle’s whole thing is money, I made the topic “a fat stack of cash”. Then they related it to stuffed animals. And now this discussion keeps happening when making friends, from both of them, so it seems like Swindle is using the twins to kidnap all of the Terrans, lmaoooooo.

Transformers fandom on their way to find the most ridiculous way to bash Earthspark Optimus Prime:

"See how the Terrans pounding on mind-controlled Optimus hard with no restraint versus. how the Terrans went soft on Megatron? It shows how the Terrans like Megatron more than Optimus Prime because he didn't bother to spend time with Malto kids and Malto bots"

Episode 25 and 26: All five Malto bots ganged up on Optimus Prime to put him to unconscious mode to stop him from attacking them versus only Twitch was "fighting" with Megatron and it was basically an eagle hunting a little sparrow... Also Twitch lost her swords and was basically frantically begging for Megatron to wake up because she knew she couldn't defeat him...
