康提 Kandy 的佛牙節

因為是八月來斯里蘭卡，正好遇上康提有佛牙節 Esala Perahera，是斯里蘭卡重要的節慶之一，由佛牙寺和當地四個印度教寺院一起舉辦的慶典，每年八月份月圓的前十天開始，每天晚上有不同路線的遊行。

這幾天的市區會非常忙碌，中午開始就有人開始佔位子，下午三點開始封街。

我在這裡也試了不少當地食物。

在當地大排檔吃 Masala Dosal 只要15塊台幣，還有不辣的milk rice也是好選擇。

白天繞湖走一圈還蠻舒服的。

佛牙節有兩個晚上的遊行路線會經過我住的青旅，所以坐在窗口正好可以看完整兩小時的遊行。

遊行隊伍一開始最前面是一群甩鞭人打響鞭，我猜應該有點報馬仔的意味，然後群眾們會丟銅板進去，甩鞭人則有好幾個助手會四處撿錢。

接下來是玩火人的表演，有拿在手上轉圈的，也有頂在頭上轉圈，甚至還有拋接。

後面開始就是五個寺廟的隊伍，各自有自己的顏色代表，每個隊伍有掌旗、舞蹈團、還有披著華蓋閃亮著燈飾的大象，最後則是都有馱著複製佛牙匣的大象壓隊。

Kandy Esala Perahera

The revered Kandy Esala Perahera is celebrated to worship the four Guardian godsVishnu, Kataragama, Natha, and Goddess Pattini as well as the precious tooth relic of Lord Buddha. Esala full moon day, which occurs between July and August, is when the pageant is held. The Diyawadana Nilame, also known as the chief lay head or trustee of the Dalada Maligawa, will decide on the final dates. The tentative date for the year 2022 will be the 02nd to 12th August.This extravagant event, which is regarded as the biggest in all of south Asia, is a reflection of Sri Lanka's religious and cultural values. The pageant is packed with traditional dancers and other acts, including the unique "Wewal Natuma" that can only be seen in Sri Lanka. The Perahara doesn't end there; to make it more enthralling and vivid, it also has several tuskers and elephants, traditional drums, torch bears, fire eaters, jugglers, and acrobats. History of Kandy Esala Perahera The Esla and Dalada were combined to create the modern Esala Perahera. Esala Perahera, which dates to the third century BC, was a ceremony carried out to ask the gods to send rain so that crops may be grown.

when the Kingdom was conquered by the British in 1815. The British government presented the Buddhist clergy with a sacred tooth relic from Lord Buddha. The parade was forbidden. It is said that this embargo caused the country to experience a severe drought. Governor Edward Bance then made the decision to hold the procession continually on the suggestion of the Kandyan chief and Mahanayaka Thero (head monks). . As you see, The highlight of the Kandy Esala Perahera (parade) is the spectacular sight of over a hundred elephants, decorated in lavish costumes of colorful silk and fairy lights while some of them sway to the drum beats. The Kandy Esala Perahera is renowned as the biggest religious festival in Sri Lanka. Imagine the sound of distant drum beats while the streets are awash with lines of dancers and acrobats, bright colors and lights, fireball dancers, the excitement of the crowds, children sitting on their parents' shoulders for a better view. This spectacular pageant takes place annually in July or August, for ten days. The dates may vary according to the full moon and auspicious times determined by the Temple astrologers. This year festival arrangements are set to commence from 13th August.
