When/How I Was Diagnosed
I started having trouble keeping my food down when I was in 7th grade. I noticed I had to drink a lot in order to swallow my food. I could feel it getting stuck in my chest. At first, I had trouble with things like bread and meat, but I started to have trouble with almost everything by 8th grade. I didn't tell anyone because I had no idea what was going on with me. I started secretly throwing up all the time anywhere I could find a place. My mom was the first one to find out I was throwing up all of the time. I forgot to flush the toilet in my bathroom, and she saw that I had thrown up my dinner. It was undigested food so she thought I made myself throw up my dinner. She accused my of having an eating disorder. I insisted that I just couldn't keep it down and that I had been having trouble getting my food in my stomach. She didn't believe me but said I needed to explain to the doctor if I was telling the truth. Luckly, I had a doctor's appointment 2 days later to get a physical to play basketball. I told my doctor what was going on and she immediately said, "That sounds like something I just read about called achalasia." My doctor recommended that I go see a local gastro doctor. The gastrointerologist ran a few tests on me. I did a monometry, esophagram, and edoscopy scope. After all of that, the doctor concluded that I had type 2 achalasia.
Ugh esophagram test tomorrow but it's okay because when it's over I'm going to Dunkin Donuts so yay.
