my take on the umbrella academy is that it would have had a much more compelling storyline if instead of using the "our father was a bastard that didnt raise us like siblings but more like his recruits" to justify romanticizing allison and luther's relationship they had used it to bring them and the others even closer as a family in the sense of "we might have not been raised as siblings but we should learn to work together and understand each other because we're pretty much all we have left" and eventually build up a supportive band of chaotic siblings that are figuring out how to be a real family while loving and sympathizing with each other and working through the trauma and pain their father inflicted upon them
