@espressonist replied: I actually saw religion as the downfall. Like the guy wasn't made captain ; at least he thinks , because he's religious. The original caption; Branson, would presumably not have gone to the planet. Also the villain is playing god, and hints that he's the devil. Does that make sense? So I think if you look deeper, religion/beliefs causes a lot of the problems the team met with.
Also, I don't know if I think he's queer coded per se? They did have a gay couple die . And he made more of a move on Daniels than Walter. But I see what you mean.
that’s a fair interpretation. i could totally understand it that way too. but the reason i didn’t consider david as representing religion as well is because many people consider scientific advancements to this level - making an android that’s completely human, genetic modification of advanced organisms - to be science “playing god” in a way that will ultimately harm mankind forever because it goes too far. so i thought david was more of a representation of that, of science playing god and people dying as a result.
david was absolutely queercoded because queercoding goes far beyond sexual preference. firstly the statue david by michelangelo is considered a part of gay history bc michelangelo himself was gay and there are a lot of references to the statue and to greek and roman culture within the lgbt+ community. within film the stereotype of the European Dandy(TM) - someone with a british/german accent, is highly educated often to the point of pretentiousness, is constantly making references to highbrow art, music, & literature, etc. which derives from the covert gay male scene in england, france, and germany from the 19th century up through the 1920s - fits david’s exact characterization. so even though sexually david was more overt with daniels, a woman, it’s understood to be due to compulsory heterosexuality and heteronormativity because the villain is so heavily queercoded.
also i didn’t mention the gay couple because i honestly thought i imagined it, i wasn’t sure if it was just implied, but regardless the Kill Your Gays trope is extremely homophobic as well so :////
i totally get where you’re coming from but just, that’s not really how i interpreted alien: covenant at all.
