We’re a little late on posting this one. Gene and Ren make up and are very cute. Continuation of this RP.
Warnings: Depression and anxiety mentions,
Seated at a table facing the doors, Ren sat, as he had for the past few days, and waited. And waited. ...And waited. Gene's letter was a well-handled weight in his pocket as he ran through all the reasons why it was stupid of him to be doing this - weren't there more pressing things to attend to? Wasn't this stalking? Incompetent stalking, but stalking nonetheless? The Whispers members here already knew what he was waiting for, and they would have tipped her off, wouldn't they? If she didn't show... What if it meant she was tired of him, and this was her way to let him down easily? Shouldn't he accept her word and let her be? - The pain and anger he remembered hearing in her voice kept him waiting at the bar, though, hoping to catch sight of her. Sighing, he propped his head in his hands and let his eyes glaze over for a moment.
--
"Excuse me, Initiate? There's a young man here to see you and he won't go away. Please deal with him."
Gene's eyes snapped up from her paperwork. Her brow furrowed in confusion as she stood. "Young man? What are you talking about? A human?" Gene didn't know any humans well, but she was utterly confused. Who could be looking for her, especially here? No one knew she was here. Except... She shook away the thought.
--
Ren checked the sun overhead. Truthfully, Lil would have preferred they head back to their workshop two days ago. The only thing keeping them here this late was him, and his insistence on speaking to Gene before they went, and now it was looking like they'd be another day because of him. One more hour. He'd stay one more hour, and then he'd leave, and... and he'd just have to find reasons to make trips to Lion's Arch, then. Shifting uneasily on his chair, he looked back at the doors, then glanced around the room.
--
Getting a look from her superior, she stood and hurried away without answers to her questions. Her mind reeled as she walked towards the bar. Who? Why? How? Exiting into the sunlight, Gene searched the room. A bartender, a few Whisper members, and- Oh no. Ren. He was facing the doors, looking right at her. She had told him to avoid her, not come looking!! But, her mind argued, who, what, had she expected? Ren was the only one who knew where she was, what she was doing. Had she really believed he would just let her go?
--
Ren sat up straight as Gene entered the room. His hopes for actually seeing her again, especially after the way she'd neatly vanished the other night, had been so low that he almost didn't believe it at first - the look on her face when she set eyes on him, though, cut him deep in a way he assumed a hallucination wouldn't. Clearly, she'd meant the letter. This had been a horrible mistake. Why couldn't he just let her be? But she'd seen him, he couldn't slink away now. Pushing off from the stool, he stood, unsure whether he should approach. He settled for a small, awkward wave.
--
Gene's eyes were wide. "Ren?" She winced as Ren looked in pain. She said nothing, only approached during his small wave and pulled him to a less visible spot. "Ren? What are you doing here?!" A tiny, tiny part of him was glad he's here. She hadn't expected to see him for a long while, maybe even forever, and had braced herself for the inevitable. Seeing him was a strange break to this brace, though not an entirely unwelcome one, however she didn't want to admit it.
--
"Gene - I..." Unresisting, Ren let her lead him into a corner, out of sight of most of the bar. Even though his embarrassment made him want to retreat so that he could curl up and forget he'd ever thought this was a good idea, he was painfully happy to see her. All he wanted to do was put his arms around her. In a way, this was his fault - if he'd never met her, then Vit wouldn't have been so rude. She'd insisted they had problems before, but surely getting her arrested hadn't helped anything. "I... that is, if you... If - if you want me to leave, I will," he stammered. Everything he'd wanted to say fled in his panic. "But I - I couldn't send a reply and leave it! Gene, you're... you're my friend. A, a very good friend."
--
Gene sighed, closing her eyes. "I... You are my friend too, Ren, though I don't know what I've done to deserve it. We knew each other a few weeks and I had you locked in jail!" She almost began rambling. Treesong, what had gotten into her? "But what are you doing here? What did you want to say?" Her voice wavered slightly. "You really, really shouldn't be around me. I'm explosive, Ren. The best I can do is explode on some dragons. Go home, huh? Work on those turrets of yours." She resisted the urge to smile, but a glimmer went through her eye as she remembered how passionate Ren was about his turrets.
--
"That, ah, was as much my fault as yours." Ren made an abortive motion with his hands, letting them thump back to his sides in failure. How to explain? How to express how comfortable he'd felt around her, even though he'd still been awkward and clumsy? He couldn't help but think of her as he worked on his turrets. "I... I don't mind that you're angry. You have reason to be," he managed. "I mean, I - I like explosive things! My turrets, I mean. I mean, not when they explode because I've made some miscalculation but - that is - "
Shutting up took physical effort; he put a hand over his mouth and looked away from her, his cheeks darkening. "I... I will leave, and I'll stay away. If you want me to. But, uhm... I... If you need... Gene, I - I want to be there. If you need me. I would hate to know you need someone but think you're a... a burden, or... or that you're imposing, or..." Lamely, he raked his hand through his spikes.
--
Gene listened with widening eyes as Ren spoke. Why did he care so much about her? What had she ever done to deserve it? She had caused so much turmoil. He never would have been wrapped up in so many problems without her. She remembered their first real meeting like it was yesterday, and yet even that was tainted with anger between Vitrun and herself. But besides that, she remembered what he'd been like. Friendly, passionate, excited, happy. He could be awkward, but Gene had found it endearing. She remembered what she had been like. She was happy. Angry, but happy. She was naive, hopeful. Gene wished more than anything that she could be that person again. That was a person that deserved to be around Ren, around good, happy people. All these thoughts ran through her head as he spoke, and after. She didn't respond immediately, watching in pain as Ren stumbled over his words and raked his hands through his hair. She didn't have time to think before she acted. A lot of her wanted to push Ren away, but she acted on instinct, a piece of her old self, and wrapped her arms around Ren's neck in a tight hug.
--
Ren's breath caught as Gene's arms went around his neck; he barely hesitated before hugging her back, dwarfing her small frame in his own, his chest painfully tight. Truth be told, he wasn't comfortable around many people. Gene had been the first, and for a while the only, person he could call a friend. To see her hurting, angry, and alone broke his heart. "I'm sorry," he said into her hair. He gave her waist a gentle squeeze, but let her pull away easily when she was ready; his hands lingered on her waist for a moment, the contact a reassurance for him - he'd missed her terribly. "Not just for, ah, forcing you to see me today. For... for everything that's happened."
--
Gene pulled away after a moment; she hadn't realized how tall he was and was on her tiptoes to reach his neck. She was hesitant to pull away. His support meant more than she could express in words, and it made her almost angry that she couldn't figure out how to tell him. Just the touch was more helpful than anything she had done in weeks of distancing herself, she realized, and she felt sad when he finally drew away. "No, d-don't be sorry. None of it was your fault. And I don't mind that you came, I just..." She flailed her arms, gesturing as she spoke and continued to even after she had trailed off. "Ren, I really don't know what's going on with me right now. I'm... I'm really angry at a lot of people, a-and I'm not sure what to do about any of it. I have bucket loads of problems and I don't know why. What did I ever go through-" She shook her head and cut herself off. "My point is, I don't want to dump all this stuff even I don't get on you. Can you get that?" She searched his eyes, looking up at him.
--
Ren didn't reply right away; he took her hands in his and considered them. The urge was to hug her again rather than reply, because what could he say to that? He wished he could sort her emotions out for her. "I... I understand. Or at least, I think I do? And I won't... push, or demand anything of you. But... I-if..." Pausing, he furrowed his brow and tried to put his thoughts in order. "If - you - you don't have to be alone because of it. If you want to be, that's... I understand." The urge became too strong, and he pulled her into another hug, bending down this time so she didn't have to reach up to him.
--
Gene was surprised when he took her hands into his. She almost used him to steady herself, looking into his eyes as he spoke, rambling. She felt so much guilt, all at once, it was crushing. When had she become incapable of dealing with her emotions? She felt guilty to be upsetting him, to have left him for so long, to have pushed him away at every turn. What could she say? Ren paused, and Gene opened her mouth to speak, to tell him that maybe she didn't want to be alone, even after everything, but he wrapped her in another hug before she even got the chance. She clung to him, raising herself a little so he didn't bend as far, his presence the only tether she had. "I'm so sorry, Ren..." She said into his hair, "I don't want to be alone." She knew it was true. She knew she should have questions, how she'd deal with so much, but she didn't. Not yet.
--
Holding her carefully, Ren let her hold onto him; he turned his head to try and hide the tears that were threatening. Sorting out the wash of emotions running through him would take him time, but there were more important things to attend to at the moment. "You don't have to be," he said once he was sure his voice would hold steady long enough. "I - the Whispers wouldn't appreciate having me bumbling around, but if - if you need something, you can write me. Or visit. Or... Or something. Hack our terminals." A bit of a laugh snuck into his voice at the end - she'd been a natural with the Archive's terminal - and he gave her a gentle squeeze.
--
Gene squeezed Ren before letting him go, feeling as if he was something precious and fragile she should be careful with as she released him, a tear finally falling from her right eye, and she wiped it away, embarrassed. She smiled, though, at his ability to make a joke, and chuckled. "Maybe. Or maybe not, given last time." She suddenly felt the need to avoid his gaze as she kept thinking. She didn't really feel she deserved to look anyone in the eye, especially not him. "Part of me wants to leave the Order; I was angry, I wanted something t-to hit, to be angry at... But I gave them my word, and..." She shook away her thoughts. "But yes. I will write. And you," she jabbed a finger at him, "Had better write back!"
--
"You have my word!" Ren gave her a mock salute, stepping back to give her a bit of room as he did so. He couldn't miss her sudden reluctance to meet his eye, but he didn't push - after forcing her to speak to him like this, he felt he'd more than overstepped his bounds. Honestly, he'd been expecting her to reject him outright, and this... He couldn't help the smile that grew on his face as warmth filled his chest. "The Order is lucky to have you. And... It, it may be beneficial? Something to focus on other than..."
He shrugged and made a vague, all-encompassing motion before falling awkwardly silent. What to do from here? Excuse himself and leave? Hug her again? Cry? How did one handle this sort of situation? All he could think to do was shuffle his feet. "And, ah... there's nothing wrong or - you... It's alright, that you're angry, and - I know you don't want to be, but -" Ren's face creased in desperation. He was going to bungle it and upset her again. "I... I'll write you a letter. Would that be alright? And for now, we can - we can get a drink, or go for a walk, unless you're busy - I didn't exactly make an appointment..."
--
Gene smiled at Ren's silly salute, looking up at him. How had she forgotten how easy he was to be around? She had been so angry, so upset, and all of a sudden that was just... gone. She watched him smile, and felt guilty for feeling guilty enough not to meet his eyes. She knew he noticed. "I'm not nearly important enough to make appointments." She told him before he continued to ramble. She couldn't help a part of her saying 'No, no, you can't, you'll be weak, you'll get hurt', and she felt a pang in her chest. She wasn't used to that; she'd spent so long hardening herself. He talked about her being angry, and she wished he didn't have to worry about that. "B-but..." She was hesitant, did she deserve this? She looked at him, though, so innocent, so friendly and kind... "I have some papers to fill out, but... Y-yeah?" She kept her arms right at her side, body language tense and unsure.
--
"Okay! I can wait here while you finish your paperwork. They, uh, they're used to me hanging around now anyway. And then we can..." Ren smiled at her, his heart swelling in his chest. Not that he couldn't feel Gene's indecision, the conflict still raging in her, but now he felt... hopeful. That he could help. That she would let him, and he wouldn't have to sit on his hands as she fought her way through it alone. "We can do what you'd like to do."
--
Gene grinned, forcing herself to loosen up. "O-okay! Umm... I haven't seen much of the new city, we could do that?" She didn't want to admit she'd been cooped up in the Whispers base for a long time. She was just happy to get out, especially with Ren. She took a step back, "I'll just be a minute?"
Ren nodded his agreement and took a step back himself, back into the bar proper. "That sounds good. I'll... wait. Over here." He gestured over his shoulder back at the table. Giving her a timid little wave and a smile, he took his seat again this time without his despondant air. Lil would be waiting for him, but she would understand.
Lillica Foster, Gavaya Querii, ludrix, Barran the Bold, Mender Duncan
Lillica decides to bring in a specialist to look at ludrix. Continuation of this RP.
Warnings: Emotional abuse? Jail time and crying.
Lillica
Lillica was in her office staring at a sheet of paper. She'd used a typewriter this time. Perhaps the neat, blocky font would convey a little more authority and urgency. That's what she needed in this second letter to Querii, who still hadn't arrived at the lab despite the first letter Lillica wrote to her nearly two weeks ago. "Blah blah blah, important assignment, relevancy to sylvari, chaos infused sprout," she mumbled, reading it back to herself. It was nearly identical to the first letter, just a notice that Querii was to report as soon as possible to the Lab in Garenhoff, an assist with testing and analysis of Iudrix, who still showed no signs of chaotic energy dissipation. If anything, the levels in his body had started to rise again for the first time since the incident. It was what forced Lillica to admit she needed an expert's opinion on his condition. How every good Lillica was with tools, gadgets, and now chaos, the realm of advanced biology was still beyond her.
Yavril
Querii had received the letter, of course. But even joining the Consortium couldn't alter her ways, and she was not one to leave anything unfinished, even if it was only a series of simple tests. No matter how intrigued she was by the chaos radiation's effects on a sylvari. She had vaguely sworn to herself when she'd received the letter - she'd never have condoned these kind of experiments on a sylvari. But it was far too late now, and she had prepared to leave just as soon as she had finished.
Brom
In the sprout's eyes, he was doing good. Nothing hurt, he was alive- life was still an adventure and each day was doing something new anyways. Hiccups were normal and he really hadn't destroyed anything too big yet. So what if he had to step outside sometimes so he didn't mess up whatever experiment was going on, he didn't understand it at all anyways. He was actually outside right now, sitting by the door, his back against the frame. Playing that flute again. He only ever played one song, and it was clearly unfinished whatever it was. But at least he was getting there. The ever-present pink sword lay across the top of his feet.
Lillica
Lillica gazed out the window at Iudrix, peaceful as usual. She considered breaking out her old lute, joining him for a song. It had been a year since she last played in Divinity's Reach, and ever since being kicked from the city, music didn't feel as rewarding. "Iudrix!" She hollered out the window, "Do you think you could mail this for me?" The letter was finished, tucked neatly inside a sealed envelope which she waved for him to see. "I'll give you a few silver if you do~!"
Brom
"Another one?" Iudrix stood up, the sword cracking out of existance and reappearing at his side. "Alright." he tucked the flute away and walked over to the window, standing on his toes to reach up and get the letter. "I won't be gone long. Probably." The sapling grinned at her, waving the envelope in a half-salute before turning to leave down the path. Mailing something was a thing he COULD do.
Yavril
Querii got the second letter just as she was finishing up and preparing to leave. Reading over it quietly, she sighed. It was typed, this time - perhaps the situation was more urgent than she'd thought. She tucked it into a pocket and pushed away the last of her tools in the now cluttered room she'd been given. The journey to Kessex would take a few days; she was going to have to cross Caledon and Kessex to get to where Lillica spoke of.
Lillica
"Thank you Iudrix," Lillica gave a small now of her head, sending him on his way. Even now she could tell things were off. He seemed more pink than usual. Lillica scrounged for another piece of paper, jotting down a note to herself and pinning it to the wall above her desk. The note read: Modify Inventor's Goggles. Change Grade B to Grade C, with added chaos sighting functionality. Reduce distance viewing to accommodate. From the look of things, Querii might not come by, at least not soon. If that happened Lillica would have to use what she could to keep Moniter Iudrix's condition, and the most sure fire way was constant surveillance.
Yavril
The trek across the vast Caledon and still slightly corrupted Kessex was not forgiving, but it did come to an end and Querii found herself in the small port town of Garrenhoff. It was rather quaint, and the asura felt almost uncomfortable in such a place after getting used to the Sylvari environment. She had to pull out the letter again to recall where Lillica had asked her to be. She ignored peculiar looks from the townspeople as she followed the letter's directions.
"Hello?" She called as she arrived, hoping she'd found the right place.
Brom
"...Hello?" Iudrix was outside yet again, the tall thin sylvari popping up from where he was sitting to greet whoever it was. He was a sight, all long limbs with those bold purple faux wings jutting out from his back and shirt. And, of course the ghostly illusion sword in his left hand, solid though it looked like it wasn't, the point in the dirt yet again. "I haven't seen you before. Are you looking for someone?" He tilted his head, looking down at her. While he'd seen asura from a distance he really hadn't TALKED to one.
Yavril
Querii wondered if this was who Lillica had mentioned. "Yes. My name is Gavaya Querii, Lillica sent for me. Is she present?"
Brom
"I think so. She's inside. Hold on." he held up a finger then went to the door, opening it and just yelling inside. "Lillica! There's a--- Gavaya Querii looking for you!" He almost just said asura, but that was rude. Probably.
Lillica
"Ah, finally an Asura. My old scratch would hate me for saying this, but it finally feels like a lab here," she hollered down the stairs, swiftly traveling from the third to first floor, meeting them in the doorway. "Querii, you're late by more than a few weeks. Whatever, just put your stuff down and step inside, yes, we have much to discuss." Lillica motioned for Iudrix to help with the bags while she led Querii to her office. It wasn't time for lab work just yet, they had to establish why Querii was here first. "I know I didn't explain much in the letter but you'll have to forgive me, there's just too much to explain. The sprout out there is Iudrix, he's the one in question. I'm sure you saw his sword. The poor thing isn't even six months old and already... He's progressing along strange lines at a strange pace. I was hoping you could help explain why."
Yavril
Querii frowned, following Lillica with a certain air or dissatisfaction. Lillica was an interesting specimen of a Sylvari, but she could certainly be an overpowering source sometimes, and that didn't sit quite right with Querii most of the time. She listened quietly as Lillica explained, until- "Wait, less than six months?" She was glaring at Lillica now, although really more calculatingly than angrily. "Exactly how old is he? There could be serious repercussions if he wasn't old enough. That might explain some of the symptoms you mentioned." She spoke quickly, not a moment to loose. "I will need you to describe the experiments in full. I do not pretend to understand chaos energy, you may need to fill me in. I'll also need him to give consent to minor examination, unless you've already done as such."
Brom
While they talked Iudrix shuffled the bags around downstairs, taking his own sweet time to find an empty corner of a room he could stash them in. It wasn't as easy a task as it sounded. Finally he finished, slinking up the edge of the stairs to hover as close as he thought he could get away with- curious about the asura and whatever they were talking about. Not that he could really make out the fast words.
Lillica
"I'm not sure he was even a month when first exposed to the chaotic energy," she began, "And it know enough about chaos to make up for your gaps in knowledge. Initially I wanted to figure out how chaotic leakage influenced verdant biomatter, since we only have baselines for the fleshier races. I can show you my data. I interpreted it using my limited knowledge, but as a biologist you may read into it more than I can. Iudrix, could you get the charts? The ones on you, they should be in the lab. Also grab a consent form to fill out!" She hoped he'd heard her.
Yavril
Querii groaned; less than a month was far, far too early to be exposed to such radiation. "Testing on sylvari will be far different than testing on a... 'fleshy' race. Especially considering your candidate is so young. Unlike other races, they do not change shape, but I have been hypothesizing recently that their connection to the dream may change as they age, almost similar to a human's developmental stage. At first, a sylvari requires a deeper connection to the dream to make up for a lack of experience, et cetera. Because these are cerebral, mental changes, I have no idea what effect chaos energy could have on him. Even if my hypothesis is false, the connection to the dream could be effected by the chaos energy anyway. I'll need to know how old he was when the tests first occurred - precisely - and how old he is now." She pulled out her notepad that she had previously kept hidden in a pocket and began to flip through her notes wildly, waiting for ludrix to return.
Brom
It didn't take long to find the charts, especially since he kept having to add on to them. He also grabbed the form and a pen, pausing over it before heading back up the stairs. Something about another consent form and an asura was making him feel nervous, although exactly WHY Iudrix could not quite place, and by the time he was back up to the office those ephemeral butterflies were popping in and out again, flickering near his shoulders at a noticeable but random pace. They matched the sword he still had tucked into his belt, pink and glassy. "Got them." He didn't say anything else, just sort of stayed in the doorway.
Lillica
"Come inside Iudrix, Querii has some things she'd like to know," Lillica had already forgotten Iudrix's exact age. She wasn't good with remembering things like that, the ones that don't matter too much. Despite Querii's warning, she still didn't think it mattered that he was young. She'd kept a careful monitor on him throughout the testing, and they stopped before anything dangerous occurred. Not before anything permanent, but the permanent things were alright so far, so long as Querii could help devise a way to keep the chaos from spiking again. While Lillica pointed out the places for him to sign in consent, she remained quiet. Iudrix could answer most of the basic questions more accurately than she could. To pass the time, Lillica found herself recalling a day many moons ago, when she'd first met Zezzifer and started down this line of inquiry, into the subject of chaos. Zezzifer was always bursting with energy, always turning things into something else, blinking from here to there, stirring up trouble whether she intended to or not. Iudrix hadn't undergone the Zezzifer recreation trials, but he was exposed to energy from a leaking battery, which was the product of her Zezzifer tests. Could it be that he would be starting down the same path anyways? We're the butterflies that jumped in and out of existence just the beginning? Just like Zezzifer, if Iudrix's chaotic signature continued to rise, would he be forced to shape the area around him with magic just to keep it from bursting out in less controlled, more damaging ways? These were the things Lillica had begun to consider. Her thoughts usually zipped from point to point like this, making connections before she recognize they were there, and by the time she could catch up it was too late. Maybe Iudrix was the same, a brilliant, unwitting success at the cost of terrifying means to reach it, which Lillica, as usual, didn't recognize until after the fact.
Yavril
Querii nodded, even smiled as ludrix entered the room. This was something reserved for Sylvari alone, sometimes genuine, and other times simply a method of disarming. There was no doubt she felt more comfortable around Sylvari than her own kind. "Allow me to reintroduce myself," she began. "My name is Gavaya Querii. I am a... researcher, for the consortium." As she spoke, she looked up and down the green/purple sprout with new eyes, trying to pinpoint any possible physical damages from whatever chaos tests Lillica had preformed. "Lillica has called me in to help with this case because I am a biological expert on Sylvari. I tell you this so you are aware you are entirely safe in my hands." As Lillica went over the forms, Querii scrambled through a few more of her notes before settling on a blank page. She didn't find any signs of external damage, and she doubted he could hide it from her. She took it as a good sign. "I do have some questions. Firstly, your age when you began these experiments, and your current age."
Brom
In this light the only difference was his eyes, once a bright green they'd slowly picked up more a pinkish tint. His glow as well, though the indigo it started as still deafened the slight bit of pink it had started to gain. Not that that could even be examined with the sun overhead. Her smile definitely helped as he stood awkwardly in front of her with papers signed, the speed of the butterflies calming with his nerves. "I'm really fine," Iudrix mumbled, "It only hurt when it happened." He took a deep breath. "I, um, don't really keep track of days too well. Maybe- 6, 7? Weeks ago? Two months? When I got here it'd been, um... Fivedays." The last sentence was sad rather quickly, remembering how upset Ren had been.
Yavril
"Five days? Really? How did you even get far enough from the Grove?" She looked between ludrix and Lillica wildly. Had Lillica known that he was so young? Even without knowledge of Sylvari biology, it seemed like common sense not to perform experiments on one so young. She just shook her head in amazement, though, and jotted down what ludrix had told her. "Lillica, can you recall how long he's been here? And my next question is if the experiments have been repeated since the initial tests."
Lillica
"I'm not sure exactly. A few months maybe," Lillica said as she picked at her rose-buns, "I'm not sure. I did not repeat the same experiment, though I did try something else, more for information gathering than anything. Looks here," Lillica whispered, poking the corner of page seven, "You'll see in the initial findings. Iudrix had claimed that I was pink, along with other red things. He also claimed to have a ghostly sword in his hand. Of course we didn't see any sword, and I am as red now as ever. Page seven details about two weeks after the initial test, once the new imagining equipment arrived. By looking through it we could see the highlights of chaotic energy shaping a sword in his left hand, along with strong signatures behind his eyes, and remaining ones throughout his body, as if crossing all veins." Lillica pointed at the sword by Iudrix's side, "The sword in the image was missing it's tip. Somehow we managed to complete it with infused chaotic energy from phantasmal butterflies. Doing so made it tangible, and he seems more comfortable with it now. Iudrix has been steadily growing an affinity for atypical phantasms since then. The exact details are inside."
Brom
"Ren brought me. I wanted to get out, but I kept getting stopped. So I convinced him to take me." Iudrix went quiet while they talked, listening. It was all stuff he knew already of course. "She still looks pink to me. But I'm okay. I don't need that color." He fidgeted a little, uncomfortable with all the focus. "I- It doesn't hurt or anything. Honest."
Lillica
"Ren is another like you who joined the program," Lillica said to Querii, "He's been helping me out with some of my research, but for the most part looks after Iudrix when he isn't trying to solve the problems in his own work on rail gun technology. I'm... Not sure where he is right now, but you can't miss him if you see him. Big, blue, fuzzy, and easily flustered. You should probably get to know him, since you two are the program's most prominent stars."
raumlet
Ren chose just that moment to poke his head into the room, having heard his name as he came down the stairs - he'd been shifting things in the attic in an attempt to make more room. For... reasons. His bark was noticeably less minty green than usual, what with the dust. "What?" His eyes dropped to Querri, well below the height he was used to looking. "Oh. Um. Hello."
Yavril
Querii looked over Lillica's data inch by inch. Much of the results regarding chaos energy totally lost her, but others shone like stars in the night. She wasn't sure she believed ludrix's insistence he was in no further pain - being affected by the chaos energy in a way that was still lingering in his brain, eyes, and body could - and to be frank, should - be screwing with his nervous system. She listened to Lillica and Ren speak as she worked through the pages, until she heard someone new enter. The Sylvari seemed friendly enough, and Querii nodded to him. She couldn't help but remark that it was yet another Sylvari. She wondered what about the Consortium drew their interest. That was a question for another time, however. "Hello. My name is Gavaya Querii, I'm a Sylvari biologist, and I am assisting Lillica with the project. I assume you are Ren? Is there any chance you'd be able to assist with a few questions I have before I begin?"
Brom
Iudrix startled when Ren spoke, a burst of butterflies flickering around him before completely vanishing. The rest of his nervousness seemed to fade completely when he realized who it was, the young sylvari letting out a sigh. "I don't really need taken care of. Really," he continued, turning back around to face the two with the notes.
raumlet
"Ah -" Ren's eyes darted briefly to Drix as the sparkles burst into nothingness, but he stepped fully into the room. "I'm, um - that's me. What sort of questions did you have? What... uh, what exactly were you planning to do... ?"
Lillica
"I just called her in to help assess Iudrix," Lillica answered, "She is a biologist, and like you she is with the program."
Yavril
Querii sighed, "At the moment," she glanced at Lillica, "I'm just trying to tell if Lillica's caused any long term damage to ludrix while she was testing previously. Now, to start, I'm wondering how long exactly ludrix has been here."
raumlet
The look Ren gave Lil could be classified as suspicious, but he folded his arms and furrowed his brow as he thought back. "Ah... Since.... 295 Colossus? Roughly two months," he said, addressing Querii. "The initial testing was the same day. Lil forced him to manifest the sword two weeks later, 309 Colossus."
Yavril
Querii nodded as she jotted down notes in a script no one but her would ever be able to read. "That's still too young," she remarked, with a pointed look towards Lillica. "Thank you, Ren. ludrix," she shifted her gaze, "did you notice any... problems with your connection to the dream while the tests were occurring? Or either of you? Do you, ludrix, notice any lack of connection to the dream now?"
Brom
"I- I--- I'm not sure. It was all so fast and things are different now- but-" he shrugged lamely, wings drooping. "Looking back at it, it's all like a bright flash, sharp and then- everything breaks." Iudrix drew his sword, just letting it rest in his hand. "It was a gun before it was a sword. I think it might be because I remember blades, not bullets."
Yavril
Querii couldn't help but feel a tinge of concern for the Sylvari. Her forehead drew together in a frown and she noted something to check on later. "Interesting." She looked back and forth between Lillica's data and her own notes. "What about now? Is your connection to the dream altered in any way? It may feel different than two months ago, I believe this is a natural part of the Sylvari aging process, but I'm looking for... background chaos energy or the like. Something that seems innately off."
Lillica
Lillica listened intently to what they were saying for all of three minutes, then her mind was off wandering again. Connection to the dream, huh? She'd never had one as strong as the others seemed to. A number of Mesmers in her old chronomancer teams were sylvari, and as each of them left, they always left with a pointed remark, "How can you stand the feeling?" They'd say something like that. "What feeling?" Was her stock answer. If they were referring to guilt, Lillica had built her experiments to avoid any major predictable blunders, she didn't allow sylvari for the Zezzifer timeslip trials, and everyone was given detailed paperwork before getting involved. But if they meant a collective anxiety in the room, Lillica was never able to take part in it. To her, the dream didn't share such feelings so obviously.
Brom
"I don't know. I don't really know much of anything. I- I don't remember what it felt like before if it was different. It was... so much." Iudrix hung his head, a little ashamed at his lack of explanations. "I can still feel when people are... upset and things." He didn't look at Ren. "I just feel normal, it's everyone else who's saying I'm not."
Yavril
Querii didn't comment as she jotted down more details. There was no way she liked the way that ludrix seemed to be feeling, but it was a part of the questions she had to ask. "The fact that you're seeing pink instead of red," she said, "is enough to prove there has been some affect on you." Never over good at comfort, Querii distracted herself with her notes before looking up to Ren and Lillica. "Alright, a few questions. One, do either of you recall if you felt unconnected to the dream while the tests were under way? Did ludrix seem disconnected? Did ludrix, during the tests, give off a strange emotional reading over your Sylvari senses during the test? Does he now?" There were more questions on rapid-fire than she had had initially, but her mind carried her far away, and suddenly there were hundreds.
Lillica
"I don't know," Lillica sighed, "I've never been very well connected to the dream. I'm sure he felt something, but whatever it was never reached me. Ren's a much bigger softie than I am, so maybe he did?" she elbowed Ren playfully, despite knowing fully that he had become quite annoyed with her since Iudrix came. It was all over his face. She didn't need the dream's empathy to tell her. "Oh but there is one thing. Iudrix claimed that during their tests time seemed... Different. He heard an saw things that we didn't, and I'm guessing the sword we managed to make tangible is only a fraction of what flashed before his eyes. I had initially written it off as typical chaotic nature, perhaps a consequence of resonance with the battery, which is a product of refined chronomancy. Are you suggesting that there may be another, more biologically related reason to the experiences?"
raumlet
"Nothing seemed off for me during the tests, but I wasn't paying attention," Ren said with a shrug. He swayed with Lil's nudge, but otherwise, he didn't react - a great, fuzzy wall. "He's anxious a lot, but that's... understandable. Whether anything is truly different... I'm sorry." With another helpless shrug, Ren spread his hands. "I'd only just met him. I... I didn't think before I brought him here, and... he... I-if something has changed, I wouldn't be able to recognize it."
Yavril
Querii sighed, jotting down something short in her book before putting it away entirely. "Alright, fair enough." She crossed her arms. "And yes, Lillica, I think it's possible. Sylvari brains are wired in a completely different way than any other race. Your brain is designed to pick up on signals mine can't even comprehend. It's very possible the chaos radiation affected these parts of ludrix's brain and caused these bizarre experiences. I have no idea yet which parts were hallucinations and which parts were a reality none of us but ludrix can see, but it's clear at least some of it was real, given his sword."
Lillica
Lillica grinned, "That's exactly why I wrote for you to come in. I was in the same boat as you, but from the opposite perspective. Maybe together we'll be able to figure what's going on, and what should be done about it if anything. Do you think it would help at all to see the blueprints of my batteries that were being tested, or is that beyond your area of expertise?"
Brom
"I don't see it at all now, though! It's gone. It only happened when- when it hurt. After that, there was only the sword and now that I HAVE it there's not even that anymore it's- I don't see any of it now." Something slowly seemed to dawn on him, and he hugged said sword to his chest, a few sharp-edged butterflies flickering. "Nothing needs to be done. I know you don't like it- but I'm fine. Please don't take away the sword. The one I gave to Sikora- I- She- It was bad." The idea was plainly distressing, from the tangible pieces of accidental magic to the pitch of his voice.
Lillica
Lillica smiled at Iudrix, the poor sprout. She still couldn't get over the fact that he hadn't left yet. Everyone else did since he began the new line of research, and even Ren looked uneasy. But Iudrix? Well, Lillica felt like giving him a wintersday bonus present just for being so unfazed, for even growing attached to the changes that had come about. "I won't let her do anything you don't want her to do, including removal of your swords. Querii was called her on my order, as a consultant. She is consortium as well, and not the management type. So you can be more at ease. I'll do my best to explain any options that arise with her expertise available to help analyze you."
Yavril
Querii frowned as she watched the two. Sikora? Clearly she was missing some context. "I will not take away your sword without good reason, ludrix. I promise." She meant her words - he was clearly emotionally attached, and perhaps even physically attached, somehow. There was a moment's pause as Querii considered Lillica's offer. The closest thing to a battery she had studied lately was the Pale Tree and how it was living. She shrugged, finally, "A battery is rather far out of my experience range. It depends on how well you believe you can explain the technology."
Lillica
Lillica paused. Could she explain it? Yes, given time, she might have a way. Does that promise Querii would really understand it? Absolutely not. This was an entirely new technology, a prototype battery that refined chronomancy through specialized spell casting across three levels. It funneled two or more mesmer's power to lock another Mesmer in time, hopefully making that One into something of a chaotic generator or charger when they came out, though all attempts thus far resulted in unstable individuals. Then that Mesmer, titled a Zezzifer, would direct enormous amounts of its chaotic power into the batteries Lillica created to store it. Lillica sighed and did her best to explain it all. "... And then the batteries can be recharged by a Zezzifer. I- I lost all of the previous Zezzifer's, along with the chronomancer teams to create them. Iudrix, he volunteered to help me test the effects of chaotic leakage on sylvari, since there's no existing empirical data on it. We used the only battery I had managed to fill in an Elixer rifle, and he stood outside after powering it up. That was all. The only other thing I can mention about my process is the crystals I used in my batteries were from the same mine as the thaumanova reactor's, which means it's likely they have an abnormal tendency towards resonance with the source cluster. It might also be why Iudrix became so intwined with them." Lillica leaned back in her chair to take a breath and stretch, "I've explained about as much as I can, without getting technical. That's what's happened from a chaos and tech perspective, but how it affects or has been affected by the intricacies of sylvari anatomy... You're going to have to figure that part out. Do you think you can do it? And if so, is there anything you'll need, equipment or funding?"
Yavril
Querii's mind had to race to follow Lillica's long explanation. She certainly had been right to go into biology. "I can try, but..." she looked at ludrix with a hint of regret in her eye, "I'm unsure how far I will be able to take the research without seeing the experiment first hand, or repeating it. It would also require full cooperation from ludrix to experiments he may or may not be comfortable with." She inhaled. "Assuming he is, I would need other Sylvari of a similar age - within a month of him - willing to allow me to perform some tests. At least one, though two would be helpful. Also, full access to any and all research on chaos energy the consortium has ever performed, a few basic tools for reading Sylvari from my lab..." She paused, trying to come up with the rest of what she'd need. "I can have a full list by the end of the day, but those are the essentials." She looked ludrix up and down; this was quite the project she was taking on. The implications could be extraordinary, if she could understand them. Already she had thought of three different tests she wanted to run on him and whatever other Sylvari subjects she would get.(edited)
Brom
"If it helps I guess I could do it," Iudrix slowly stated, still holding that sword. The battery explanation had once again gone over his head as it always did, but at least the promises had assuaged his fears about them tearing the sword away like Sikora had. "But I broke the gun last time and- and I wasn't really that helpful." He looked over to Ren to see what he thought of the whole thing, although honestly the sapling figured he already knew the answer to that question.
Lillica
Lillica stopped them, "No, this won't work. The battery, as Iudrix said, is gone. It and the gone more or less turned into his sword. After hearing the process to make batteries, it goes without saying that constructing another filled one is out of the question, it simply cannot be done. We have neither a willing subject nor a chronomancy team. I can help with anything else, but recreating the tests is impossible."
raumlet
"I... I wouldn't recommend repeating the initial test again anyway," Ren said quietly, his arms folded across his broad chest. Although he caught Iudrix's eye, he looked away after only a few seconds, guilt tweaking at him. "I wouldn't consider what happened to be, uh.... Ethical. At all. None of it. If y-you think your experiments might - that is -" He seemed to shrivel as he spoke, his arms tightning across himself until he fell quiet. "I - I'll, um, offer what assistance I can, but... My strength lies in mechanical engineering, as Lil said, so there isn't much I can do."
Yavril
Querii didn't seem upset at the revelation there would be no way to repeat the experiment. It surely meant that her job would be harder - perhaps even impossible - but if there was a way to avoid harming more Sylvari, she would take it. "That's fine, Lillica. I still need young Sylvari to compare ludrix to. If you happen to know any young Sylvari that you're familiar with, it would help with their trust." Querii smirked at Ren, almost amused. He seemed to be a nice guy, but the stuttering and shyness was out of hand. "Thank you for the support, Ren. I understand your concern."
Lillica
"I haven't been back to the grove in some time," Lillica admitted, "Any sylvari I knew who were young have since grown. Perhaps Ren or Iudrix would be better to ask? Otherwise, it's time to see about posting help wanted flyers."
Brom
"I left so quick I really don't know anyone. I barely remember their faces, much less names." Iudrix looked at the ground again, letting the sword just burst into a field of swifly vanishing butterflies. "There's really only two other than Lil and Ren I know that are even somewhat close by, and they think I'm some sort of monster." Plus they were definitely too old but what did that matter if there was no way they'd agree anyways.(edited)
raumlet
"I only visit the Grove occasionally, and never for long," Ren said. "I am under a year, but barely. The only other Sylvari I know is my age... Who thinks you're a monster?" He asked, brow creased.
Yavril
Querii sighed, "Well... you and your friend might work as a last resort, assuming you could convince them, but younger would be ideal. I can return to the Grove to look for candidates if it requires that. From what I can tell, ludrix isn't in any immediate danger. So we have time."
Brom
"Dandy and Roisenrot. They live..." Iudrix gestured vaguely in the direction, "Over that way. She's nice enough but he-" He sort of gave up midway, just letting the explanation trail off. "I really am fine, things happen sometimes but it's never nothing bad. Even when I ended up somewhere else I could still walk back." He brought the sword back, just at his side this time where it belonged.
Lillica
Lillica nodded, "It sounds like returning to the grove to search is our best option. Do you think you could do that? Would anyone like to go with Querii, as an ambassador?"
raumlet
Ren glanced over at Drix, then down at Querii. "I... I could go? If you wanted me to," he said to the Asura. "I, uh, have a reputation with the Wardens, though..."
Yavril
Querii shrugged. "I don't expect the Wardens to be much trouble. A few of them even know me by now. Having a younger Sylvari with me will likely encorage the saplings. Many of them are wary around my kind." She didn't mention that that infuriated her - she wished they could tell they were safe with her like they could with other Sylvari. She shook away the thought, "Although, if it's the kind of reputation that will have us arrested on sight, maybe not."
raumlet
"Oh, no, nothing that serious," Ren said - finally, he released himself to hold his hands with the palms facing out defensively. "I - as a sapling in the Grove, anything I built tended to be, uh... Unstable. The Wardens knew that. They're still wary."
Lillica
Lillica cut in, "You should have studied beyond the grove, like me! My Scratch was incredibly enlightening. I'd recommend it to any young sylvari."
Brom
Iudrix bit his lower lip, quiet while they discussed. "I don't know what will happen if I go back. I didn't, um, really leave like I was supposed to. I was specifically told not to. A lot."
Lillica
Lillica grinned at him, "Well it ended fine, didn't it? There are some things that just need to be done despite what people say. Like one time, in Divinity's Reach, I saw this massive silver..." She stopped herself, "...Bad example. Nevermind. I'm happy you're here though."
Yavril
Querii nodded to Ren. "Alright, so you'll come, unless you've got a big problem. And ludrix... it's up to you, honestly. I assume Lillica won't be coming?"
Brom
"I'm almost more scared of going back than holding another gun like that," the sapling slowly admitted, a soft smile touching the corners of his mouth. "B-but I guess if this mess is mine I probably should." He looked back up at everyone. "Just as long as no one makes me stay."
raumlet
"You're older now - they shouldn't be able to hold you," Ren said quietly. His arms went back over his chest, less defensively this time. "Querii, if you'd like me to, I'll accompany you."
Yavril
Querii looked up at ludrix. She wished desperately for a high place so she could be on eye level with him. "I won't stop anyone from coming if they wish to."
Lillica
"I'll stay here and continue my work. Iudrix, it's fine if you stay. I can order some jiggle-ooze-jelly for us."
Brom
Iudrix shook his head. "No, I'll go. At the very least someone should know I'm not dead. I'll probably have to go back some day, might as well be sooner than later. Besides. It's my mess."
Brom
The trip was thankfully uneventful. With those waypoint devices along the journey the Grove was honestly not that far. Iudrix spent most of the trip in a nervous quiet as he followed the other two, only blinking ahead by accident once when he was trying to make something in the distance out. And it wasn't that far. As they reached the bright giant leaves that framed the curling entrance he was mostly hiding directly behind Ren's bulk, just tall enough to peek over one fuzzy shoulder. There were butterflies everywhere, the closer they got to the door the more nervous he got.
raumlet
Ren would have been hard-pressed to miss the anxiety rolling off of Iudrix; even without that handy empathy Sylvari shared, the butterflies were a bit of a giveaway, flickering madly around them in an eyecatching display. "Iudrix," he said softly, looking over his shoulder at the sapling, "You aren't a week old anymore and they can't make you stay... But you don't have to come with us if you don't like."
Yavril
Querii led the group, unafraid of the Wardens. Unlike her companions seemed to be. If he was this frightened outside the Grove, how was he going to be inside? She'd have to give him a moment, she figured, and paused while Ren talked. Besides, she'd been itching to draw a flashy red Sylvari practicing with a bow and arrow. She'd never finish, but she pulled out her notepad anyway.
Brom
Iudrix looked down and to the side, wrinkling his nose. "As long as you're sure I guess it will be okay. You'll stop them if you're wrong, right?" A couple of the butterflies cracked as he tried to get control of them, fragmenting away with the sounds of breaking glass. He took a step back away from the other Sylvari. Not far enough to be anything more than a token attempt, mind you.
raumlet
"Honestly, I don't think they could contain you," Ren said, a little grin tugging at his lips. "You'd blink out of the cell on accident - but if I can stop them, I will. Okay?" He waited for Iudrix to nod before looking to Querii. "Oh, were you - um. We're ready, if you're not busy."
Yavril
"No." Querii stuffed her notepad away - she'd only finished a rough, vague, head outline. She didn't mind, she do more later. She didn't make a motion to explain herself to them, didn't bother.
Brom
Iudrix frowned at that idea. "I don't know if that's possible, there's bars wouldn't I hit th-- I'm not sure how it works. Maybe." Otherwise how could you keep anyone who actually knew what they were doing inside. He forced a grin anyways. "I'll follow you two. "
raumlet
"I'm sure you'd manage," Ren said as he headed up the final stretch into the Grove proper. "Querii, I assume you know where to go?"
Yavril
Querii led the group in through the front gates of the Grove. "Well," she called back, "My first attempt would be the classes they hold for saplings. They should be our age range. If either of you have another idea, we can split up."
"Oh, and Ren," she glanced over her shoulder to look at him, and saw the whole of Caledon as a backdrop, "If that friend of yours is here, you may want to warn them that we may need their help. As a last resort, of course."
Brom
"I would rather not split up!" Iudrix cut in hastily with a flurry of butterflies. "Let's not." Now that they were actually inside and not immediately being apprehended he looked around with a calmer heart. It was so colorful and warm and inviting and for a moment the sapling felt a deep pange of regret. Why had he felt so eager to leave? But he had, and that was all the past, now.
raumlet
"It's very unlikely that Gene would be here," Ren said, dropping his gaze to his feet for a moment. The buzz of the Grove rose up around him, familiar and comforting, the soft tide of emotions underlying the warmth of their Mother above them - the Omphalos Chamber drew his eyes. "The House of each of the Luminaries might be good to visit - most of the Sylvari my age I knew as a sapling stayed there. We can head down to the Houses - together - after we visit the classes?"
Lillica
There was a man near the pod up to the Omphalos Chamber. White, bright orange glow, thorns for hair and twigs whiskers. A crowd had gathered around him, and it made his height all the more apparent. He was ranting about... Something. "Winter!" Was the only word Iudrix's party could catch without getting closer. As they did, the crowd's faces came into view. Some angry, some ecstatic.
"You there!" The man called out to Iudrix, "I can sense it. There is youth in you, yet being here... Unease? At least a hint of it. Tell me brother, are you truly satisfied with life her in the grove, living in the shadow of our dear enigma, mother tree?"
Yavril
Querii didn't mind that this "Gene" wouldn't be here - she didn't expect needing to contact them anyway. She'd be damned if she left without at least one candidate. As they entered the center of the Grove's top floor, her attention was suddenly drawn towards a loud rambling man standing near one of the transportation pods. She frowned, torn between curiosity and a wish to complete her mission. She ignored several surprised looks she was getting from younger Sylvari, to whom an Asura was an odd sight. When he called out to ludrix, she twirled, looking back at him in surprise.(edited)
Brom
"Yes?! No?! I- Hello?" Though he was catching quite a few looks of his own with his fear and sword and magic Iudrix still startled when he was directly called out to. Amazingly he managed to not hide completely behind Ren, instead just freezing up like a deer, the wings that jutted from his back making the pose that much more comical. "I don't live here anymore! I'm visiting!" He really didn't know what to say., shouting back the first thing that came to mind.
Lillica
The man turned back to his audience, giving a big wave at the grove in general, "You see!? Even this one, certainly less than a year of age, has made his escape from the layered oppressions of our society, our world, our dream run by the pale mother. Be angry, sprouts. Be furious, even you who have put down roots. Know that however much the dream and our mother seems a set reality of the sylvari race, there are people who believe it doesn't have to be so. People who believe there is another way, a solution beyond the Soundless, Nightmare, and Mordrem. Hear me now, brothers and sisters, for I hail from the Winter Court-the court that will forge a new dream."
Yavril
Querii only smirked at the man. The Sylvari were growing as a species, certainly, to find this grey area between the Nightmare and the Tablet. The 'Winter Court' might not succed, but the idea of another path was forming. "Come on, ludrix," she said, moving past the crowds, "we have work to do."
raumlet
Once the strange Sylvari had turned away, Ren moved to push Iudrix ahead of him without waiting to hear what he was saying - the Wardens would take care of this, if they needed to. Iudrix's discomfort was putting him on edge. "That's interesting," was all he said, but without much actual interest - the Pale Tree had never occupied his thoughts, for better or worse; she was an assumed presence, but a distant one. "Are you alright?"
Brom
"That's not what I- I'm pretty okay with-" the air in front of Iudrix shimmered as he tried to come up with a flustered answer, almost like looking through a mirage. That, however, was quickly broken when Ren pushed him, the sapling quite happy to escape the attention and whatever was going on. "Who was that?"
Yavril
"A new kind of Sylvari." Querii replied, "But new is not always better. Not for everyone. Don't worry about it over-long. It was only chance he called on you. Focus on the job ahead." She attempted to distract from the commotion - sure it would only distract them - and led them ahead, down the long pathways of the Grove. Wary, though not over so, she avoided large groups that had formed, full of live chatter.
raumlet
"We can go back later if you like," Ren said. Iudrix was now ahead of him, behind Querii; he glanced back over his shoulder at the crowd. "If he's still there. He may not be. Querii, why don't we go to the Houses first instead? That gathering may be disrupting things."
Yavril
Querii threw a glance behind her. "Yes, that makes sense. You can lead the way, then," she stopped entirely, turning back to Ren. "I do not know the way. I never had a reason to go." She gestured for him to step ahead of her.
raumlet
"Alright," Ren said, speeding up to overtake Iudrix and Querii and leading the way towards the ramp that lead down to the bottom floor of the Grove. He gave Iudrix a grin as he passed. "Would you like to visit your House first? What Cycle are you? I'm Dusk."
Brom
"I'd rather not, I- I don't know if I much like him. Probably." Iudrix cast a quick glance back over his shoulder around Ren and back at the crowd. He shivered a little, the tips of his faux wings vibrating. "I am too. Dusk, that is. I- I know the way but you probably know it better."
Lillica
Iudrix saw that since they'd passed, Wardens were beginning to gather around the crowd. Yet gathering around the Wardens was another group, maybe two or three that would seem inconspicuous on any given day. Their weapons though, those matched the staff on the White speaker's back. Faded blue and white things with snow globes built into them.
raumlet
"Maybe not," Ren said. Now that they were in the Grove, he was surprisingly cheerful; even Iudrix's nervousness didn't throw him off. "It's been a while since I really visited the Grove, and I haven't seen my Luminary for... Ah. Months?"
Yavril
Querii followed quietly, just happy to be in the Grove again.
Brom
So Iudrix found himself in the lead, keeping silent about the strange false wardens. There... was probably some reason for them, one he just didn't know. "I was just focused on the ways out but... this way." He trailed off to a mumble, leading the other two down the path. Only to stop to one side of the intricate 'building', hesitating up near the wall. "I didn't really listen, maybe it's best if I just stay out here." A few butterflies fluttered. "Maybe he won't remember me but maybe not and- and maybe it's best not to be seen all messed up."
raumlet
"It can't be much worse than how they remember me. You never blew anything up, at least," Ren said from his post at Iudrix's shoulder. "Go on - you don't look messed up, either. It'll be fine."
Brom
"I guess I came this far." Iudrix half-smiled, taking his sword in hand as some sort of confidence boost. His expression was as wavered as the illusions that followed him, but he did lead them around and up the ramp that felt more familiar than it should have. Standing in the middle of the wide doorway the sapling gave an awkward hello to the others sitting inside- before stepping to the left to let Querii be seen.
Yavril
Querii smiled, she hoped reassuringly, as ludrix moved aside, trying to hold an air of trustoworthiness. For many of them, this was the first time they'll meet an Asura, she knew. She took the lead without question, and wondered if it would be better to speak to them individually or as a group. She settled on as a group - she'd have to repeat herself less. The little room wasn't over crowded, but enough to begin. She walked through the small groups to a relaxing Mentor. They exchanged a few muttered words before the woman called together the group. "Excuse me, everyone! This Asura would like to speak to you!"
"Thank you, Mentor." Querii bowed respectfully before adressing the group, "I am a representative of a group called the Consortium. These are my associates, ludrix and Ren. The Consortium studies a great many things. My role with the Consortium is to research and understand Sylvari like ludrix, who is rather special. Because of this, we require Sylvari around his age to compare him to. Hopefully somewhere from one to three months, but a little older or younger would also suffice. Any Sylvari who volunteers will be given food, shelter, and an adequate amount of compensation. We would be leaving within a day or so to Kessex." She paused, stopping herself from rambling, and looked back at Ren and ludrix, hoping they'd help her case.
raumlet
Faced with the small crowd of unfamiliar face turned their way, Ren froze - he didn't recognize anyone in the group. After months away, that made sense; the Houses were temporary, a landing place for newly Awoken while they got on their feet, and Ren's group was well past that. Unfortunately, Querii was too small and Iudrix too thin for Ren to hide his bulk behind, so he settled for trying to shrink back in the doorway and make himself as small as possible. Very few of the saplings seemed interested - several were looking Querii over with curiosity in their eyes, but only one or two bent their heads to whisper to a fellow. After a few increasingly awkward moments where Ren started to wring his hands, one of them stood and started over to Querii.
Yavril
The Sylvari was male and short, a dark sea blue with vibrant white eyes. Careful, and wary, but not un-trusting. He looked down at Querii, then between ludrix and Ren. "I have seen you in my dream," he admitted, "But that does not mean we should trust you." He was clearly more interested in ludrix and Ren than Querii at the moment, and his gaze wandered between them lazily. "What does she wish us to do, brothers?"
Brom
"Me? Uh..." Iudrix looked helplessly over to Ren, not quite sure how to react to that. He certainly didn't recognize the blue sylvari in front of them. "She wants to look at you, I guess. See what differences there are." He looked back down at the other, shrugging his skinny shoulders. "I'm really not that special."
raumlet
"Just - uh. She needs to know what, um, unaltered Sylvari of Iudrix's age are - are like," Ren said. Miraculously, he kept his voice relatively steady. "Iudrix, uh - l-left the Grove very early and participated in an... experiment." His eyes shot nervously to Iudrix. "With side effects."
Yavril
The Sylvari paused, shifting his agonizingly slow gaze between them. "It's entirely safe? No one will be harmed?"It was clear this man was some form of... leader, for a lack of a better word. Someone the others trusted, at the very least. "No one will be harmed," Querii interrupted, drawing the Sylvari's gaze. "You can trust me."
Brom
Iudrix' faux wings drooped, not sure if he could make promises, uncomfortable with the attention. He'd step back but Ren's bulk was in the way. "I think so." He hesitated. "There shouldn't be any reason for anyone getting hurt." He looked away from the sylvari, looking to Querii instead.
raumlet
"You - you won't have to participate in anything you don't feel comfortable with," Ren said, glancing down at Querii in both confirmation and warning. One sapling had been damaged due to him; he wouldn't lead more back to be injured, not if he could help it. "And... Um. W-We'll explain. What exactly will be done, I mean, so you'll be able to decide if you're comfortable."
Yavril
Querii caught the glance, but she didn't pay it much heed. She wasn't worried about harming the saplings - no tests like what was performed on ludrix would be performed on the new saplings. Even if Lillica eventually suggested it, she wouldn't allow it. Duncan nodded slowly. "I will join you, then. It should be interesting. My name is Duncan." He turned round to look at the rest of the saplings questioningly.
raumlet
Another Sylvari got to her feet as Duncan looked around, padding over on bare feet to stand at his side. She folded her hands in front of her and stared down at Querii openly. "I'll come as well, then," she said softly. "My name is Barran."
Brom
A few butterflies flickered around Iudrix. He understood why Ren got upset about the whole thing so often a little better, it was rather uncomfortable. "It won't be long, I think. I- thanks." He looked at Duncan again, biting his lower lip in thought.
Yavril
Duncan looked over his shoulder at ludrix with quiet consideration."You are welcome, brother," he responded. "I believe that will be all of us. When will we leave?" "Soon," Querii told him, nodding at the woman who had joined Duncan in thanks. "Collect anything you need to bring. You two should be enough, but if we can find more..." She trailed off. She'd rather not pull more Sylvari from their lives, but she wouldn't push away more help. Two was enough, though, to allow her to do what she needed to.
raumlet
"How were we leaving? Duncan and I could meet you by the asura gate, or near the watchgate," Barran said, "If there was other business you needed to see to in the Grove. We - I don't have much to gather," she said, raising her brows at Duncan in an unspoken question. "I could be ready within a few minutes." Ren, for his part, had lapsed into silence, a hulking presence behind the two of them despite his attempts to look small - these were just saplings, but he'd be glad to be gone. Everyone in the room was looking at them, and not every turned-up face was unclouded. A few of the older Sylvari in a corner of the room had been whispering together; one had slipped out the door without a word, leaving the others in their huddle.
Yavril
"Nor I," Duncan confirmed. Querii sighed. It was probably best to leave sooner, rather than later. To get them home quicker. "As long as you are sure. I am not sure how long we will need you for. Meet us at the gates of the Grove; I need to get a few tools from my place here."
Brom
Iudrix sighed, relaxing his shoulders. While he was getting used to collecting attention he didn't like it. "So we aren't going anywhere else? Just here is enough?" His tone had a hopeful sound to it, though part of him still wanted to stay in the grove he was still afraid of possible consequence. The skinny sapling turned to try to brush past Ren and go back down the ramp, careful to not whack him with a wing.
Yavril
Querii nodded, "Yes, two should be enough." She didn't stop him as he exited, instead looked at Ren, "ludrix can go with the saplings. You should follow me - I may need help with my equipment." She followed ludrix out without waiting for a reply. "Halt!" Wardens had appeared at the bottom of the ramp, covered in full armour. Their gazes were intense. "We are under orders to take in Esrenniel of the Cycle of Dusk. Please step aside." The man who led them had dark red hair and skin, and his voice boomed across the Grove. A few passer-byers even looked on in curiosity. "...Esrenniel?" Querri asked, confused. Her brain made the connection to Ren quickly, and she looked back at him. I thought you said you wouldn't be arrested, she thought as she glared back and forth between the Wardens and him. Duncan stood back in silence, not willing to get on the Warden's bad side. He couldn't see them, but he heard their voices outside.
raumlet
Ren froze at the top of the ramp, sudden fear gripping him and rooting him to the spot - he stared down at the Wardens over Querii and Iudrix's heads, his eyes round and startled. Briefly, he caught Querii's eye, but his expression betrayed nothing but utter confusion. "I - b-bring me - what do - I, is this about the... the engine that e-exploded? That - that was months ago -" "You were seen to abduct a sapling of less than two weeks from the Grove. We are to escort you to your cell, where you will await sentencing," the leader went on, speaking over Ren's stammering as he started up the ramp, fellow Wardens in tow. He fixed Iudrix and Querii with a glare. "Now step aside." "Wh- no, y-y-you don't understand! I-Iudrix -" Ren's voice trailed off in a choked little noise as the Wardens approached their small group. "Well then," Barran said, just behind Duncan.
Brom
Iudrix looked back at Ren, his eyes wide as well. From the moment the wardens started speaking fear practically radiated off of him, the wispy illusions that followed his emotions more and more jagged. If Ren didn't watch out, he might get cut. "NO. I asked to go!" The sword was in his hand unbidden and the sapling braced himself. It was almost funny, he was so thin and his wings bristled out all angles. "I didn't want to stay! You can't!"
Yavril
Querii had stepped out of the way after a moment's hesitation, sure they could deal with this later if they just got everyone else under control, and - more importantly - away. "ludrix!" She forced herself to take control of the situation - she doubted the saplings would intervene. "It'll be fine. Calm down, for now." She tried to tell him, through careful tone and gaze, that they could get him back later. They had work to do, now. She only narrowly avoided his long sword as she stepped in closer.
raumlet
"Iudrix, d-don't - pl-please -" Ren caught Iudrix's arm, heedless of the sharp-edged apparitions that nicked his arms as he brought his shaking hand down on the sapling's shoulder. Gently, he forced Iudrix's arm to his side and moved him to the side of the path with the same strength that let him lift and carry for Lil, even though he was trembling from head to toe. "Th...that - won't help." "Less than a week old, and you think the decisions you make will be reasonable?" The Warden was clearly impatient now, but he gestured sharply to Ren rather than face the flickering cloud of butterflies surrounding Iudrix. "We have our orders." Although he was shaking, Ren edged past Iudrix on the path, only letting go of his arm when he was past him. "L-let Lil know? Please?" He asked, looking back at them. The Warden grabbed him, spinning him around and lashing his hands together behind his back - Ren yelped, surprised and frightened, but he didn't fight. He didn't even trust himself to talk, at this point.
Brom
Iudrix struggled but lacked any sort of strength to stop Ren from pushing him aside, his feet slipping on the ramp floor despite his best efforts. As soon as he was let go he immediately went to dash forward, only to be stopped by another shorter-but-no-less-strong sylvari, one of the wardens that had caught on quick enough. "No! Stop! It's my fault! REN." The sapling continued to try to wrench free, his voice like shattered glass.
Yavril
"ludrix!" Querii cried out, too short to hold him in any way, but tall enough to put a hand on his arm. "We'll get him later," she hissed, not loud enough for the Wardens to hear. Unable to do more without physically freezing him to the floor, she hoped he would take her word for it. She flashed Ren an apologetic expression, trying to make sure he caught it.
raumlet
"I-it's okay, I'm - I'm okay," Ren managed, trying to keep his shoulders back even though his fear was nearly palpable as they spun him and steered him down the ramp. He couldn't bear adding to the Iudrix's panic. "Let - let Lil know! Please!"(edited)
Brom
The sapling finally stopped struggling, panting as he helplessly watched them drag his friend away. "I asked him! It wasn't his- let me go!" He gave one more pull and vanished, only to pop back on the other edge of the wide ramp, nearly teetering off it. Iudrix was still emitting butterflies like a sprinkler, eyes wide and positively pink as he stared back at Querii as if begging her to do something. The warden went to follow, only to turn and join the others when it was obvious there wouldn't be any true chasing.
Yavril
Though it pained her to do so, Querii didn't follow the Wardens and Ren as they trotted out of sight. ludrix's wild expression was begging for an explanation, and she sighed. "ludrix, if we had stopped them? they would have taken us all in to the jail, or we'd be fending off all of the Grove's Wardens. I have a reputation to keep, and we have a job to do." She glanced back at the saplings, vaguely worried they would be frightened off. They remained, however. Duncan was watching them with sharp eyes, but he didn't flinch away. "Take the saplings to the tavern on the second floor. I'll go to my apartment, gather my things, and meet you there. Then we can find a way to deal with Esrenniel. We will not leave without him."
Brom
Iudrix was beyond upset, height and magic not the only reason he drew eyes like magnets now. "We have to save him. I- I-" The sentence went unfinished. With a quick jerking motion and a flurry of ephemeral wings he turned to the two that had agreed to go. "Come on." He began to head to the tavern just a little too fast, forcing himself from breaking into a full run.
Yavril
Duncan threw back a look at Barran, eyebrow raised. Depending on the next hour, he might advise against going with this bunch after all. For now, though, he'd see where it was going. He followed ludrix as close as he could, checking Barran was still behind every so often. Querii let out a sigh of relief - she had only been half sure ludrix wouldn't defy her and run off to save Ren this instant. She watched they were far enough away before waving a goodbye to the rest of the group and descending the ramp herself. Her apartment was nearby, in a group of them. She walked through the Grove quietly, trying not to draw attention to herself until she reached the complex of homes. They all knew her, there. When she did, she threw a smile to a Warden who lived next door, and reached her cluttered room in no time. Intricate artwork and diagrams of both Sylvari and machines hung on every available wall space, some coloured, some erased and redone, others with recent notes added on with pen or another page. The table held a device that was reading the dream in the air, and other assorted bits and bobs of reading technology. A curved dresser she had brought from Rata Sum stood on the far end, half open from when she had been packing to leave the first time. Out of it she pulled an old, worn bag. It was nothing special - even had wholes in a few places - but it would do the job. She took only a moment to pause and look about before beginning her work, shoving gear and readers into the bag as fast as she could.
raumlet
With her long legs, Barran had no difficulty keeping up. She hummed to herself as they followed after the strange Sylvari. It would have been hard to lose him - the lightshow he was still producing turned heads as they headed up the ramp to the second floor. When they came to a halt outside the arched door, she stretched, letting her arms fold behind her head and eyeballing Iudrix over Duncan's head. "That was certainly unusual. Did he really kidnap you?"
Brom
Iudrix just gave her a baleful look, shaking his head just a few times too many in reply. "I asked him to help me out. I didn't want to stay I was told no and- I don't want to be trapped. Now he's the one trapped and I- this wasn't supposed to happen!" There was another flash of butterflies as the sapling moved inside, finding a spot on the wall to sink against. He covered his face with his hands. "Maybe you shouldn't be dragged into this."
Yavril
"I find it strange that your friend would be put in jail for taking you outside the Grove. Mentors take saplings out all the time, do they not?" Duncan didn't really know how to console this older Sylvari, despite it being in his nature to do so, and where others might have flailed Duncan reduced to a stoic version of himself. He glanced between Barran and ludrix a few times as he waited for the answer.
raumlet
"The Warden did say it was before he was even two weeks," Barran said as she squatted down beside Iudrix, back to the wall, and folded her arms over her knees. Again with the scrutiny - Iudrix's butterflies, Iudrix himself, the sword at his side. "We didn't go much further than the farms before then. I think you're lucky. Where did he take you?"
Brom
"He's not a mentor! Just- a friend. I wanted to explore from the beginning but with the--- it upset people, okay, I got dragged back a couple times before Ren agreed. I just... never came back." Iudrix mumbled into his palms, eyes shut. "I shouldn't have, ever. Kessex. I went to Kessex. There's cliffs and a little town and the ocean. And a house with stairs and- I can't believe I got him locked away what am I going to do?"
Yavril
Duncan paused before responding, sitting in front of the other two, arms crossed in meditation fashion. "Didn't the Asura say she would help get him back?"
Brom
Iudrix peeked at him from between his fingers. "I don't know what she plans to do. What is there to do? Maybe- Maybe I'll make a portal. I'm sure I can. It's just- tearing a hole through point A and B isn't it?" One of the butterflies got too close, running a line of gold up the back of his right hand. They were still sharp, he nowhere near had a handle on those things.(edited)
raumlet
Seeing the thin cut appear at the light brush of wings, Barran judiciously scooted away from the small cloud of butterflies. As pretty as they were, she'd already discovered pain wasn't very fun. "I believe breaking someone out of jail is illegal?"
Yavril
"Perhaps they wouldn't have to?" Duncan rolled his shoulders, "Perhaps they could pay a bail?" He was rather unfamiliar with the Wardens' jailing rules, but he didn't mind. He lost interest in whatever answer they would give, however, when he noticed the butterflies flitting around the man seemed to be tangible. His eyes followed as they flitted around ludrix's wings and head.(edited)
Brom
"I don't have any money. Unless his bail is...." He stopped hiding his face long enough to dig into a pocket, pulling out a handful of oil stained change. "9 silver and 3 copper. So I'm gonna have to. Illegal or not." Iudrix took a deep breath, just dumping the coins in a pile on the ground between him and Barran. "I don't think Querii is gonna be able to do anything."
raumlet
"What about that 'Lil' he was telling you to speak to?" Barran asked. She picked up a coin and inspected the greasy sheen on it, turning it this way and that, then dropped it back on the pile with a clink. Her eyes went right back to Iudrix. "Seems like he thought she could help."
Yavril
Querii finished pushing anything that might be remotely useful into the bag and slung it over her shoulder. She scurried outside, not bothering to say hello to any of her neighbours anymore - she needed to get back to ludrix. The longer she was gone the more she worried he'd do something drastic to free Ren. Of course, something drastic might be exactly what they needed - but she'd be damned if he did it alone.
Brom
"He can tell her what happened himself, when we all get back." Iudrix forced a smile, it was a joke. Haha, funny. The blow of emotions and burst of butterflies said otherwise. "I'm sure she'd- she'd be glad if I did something like make a portal." Something about the topic was like a rolling wave of despair.
raumlet
Barran caught Duncan's eye, lips pursed. "I don't think the Wardens would like that," she said. Her hand half-lifted from her arm again but stalled on its way to Iudrix - those butterflies were darting uncomfortably fast. "We may not be able to go with you if they're upset."
Yavril
Duncan nodded, sensing the tension even without fully understanding the butterflies. "You should wait for that Asuran friend of yours. And upsetting the Wardens is never a good idea." Just at that moment, Querii burst through the arches of the tavern, taking deep breaths from her jogging/speed walking through the Grove. Part of it was the anxiety of ludrix doing something stupid. Her shoulders visibly relaxed when she noticed ludrix and the saplings. "Good, you're here. Are you ready?"
Brom
Iudrix stood up when Querii arrived, rubbing at his eyes. The cut on the back of his hand left a streak of sap on the leaves that made up his cheek. "Maybe you shouldn't," he said softly to Barran, before completely facing the asura. As much as he could, being so tall he'd have to crouch to get a proper face-to-face. "To rescue Ren?"
Yavril
"Yes. I'd rather avoid conflict, if we can, but it may be necessary." She shifted the bag over her shoulder to be more comfortable, "Do you happen to know how the Wardens' jails work?" She shifted her gaze on Duncan and Barran too, "Any of you?" Duncan shook his head quietly.
raumlet
Barran shook her head as well, still squatting on the floor and so closer to eye level with the Asura. "No. I've seen their cells once, but only briefly. It was very unpleasant."
Brom
"No." It was only one word, but it caught in Iudrix' throat a bit. He really didn't have any idea. The sapling shook his head. "I'm sure we can figure it out when we get there. We have to get him out. Have to."
Yavril
Querii raised a hand. "We will, ludrix. We should head over there, if you're ready."
The Warden holding onto Ren pushed him into a vine cage with little mercy. The cage was near the entrance to the jail, with a semi-clear view of the front. It was unforgiving and unfriendly, and a woman sat, knees pulled up against her body, in the farthest corner. She didn't even look up when Ren fell into the cage. A female Warden frowned almost apologetically at her associate's harsh treatment, but she moved along with him when he left.
raumlet
The moment they entered the jail, the misery of the place washed over Ren - his knees, already watery, began to tremble so badly that the Wardens were half-dragging him by the time they reached his cell. The hard shove put him off balance, and he fell, landing on his hands and knees. This was worse, so much worse, than the Rata Sum jail cell; that had been quiet and well-lit. Here, the murky light barely reached the edges of the room. Soft noises surrounded him, almost worse than the roiling emotions from the other inmates; almost, because at least the sounds could be blocked out. Slowly, he pulled himself into the corner farthest from his new cellmate and tucked his face into his knees, his hands covering the soft buds of his ears.
Brom
"Of course I'm ready." Whether the other two were or not it didn't seem to matter, Iudrix was out the door before they had a chance to answer, the stained coins left on the floor and forgotten. Not that he got too far, the location of the jail was actually rather foggy.
Yavril
Querii gave Duncan and Barran a look as she rushed out after ludrix. She held in an amused smirk as ludrix paused, unsure where to go. "This way," she directed, towards one of the ramps to the lower level. Duncan followed quietly, throwing Barran a bermused expression.
Brom
Iudrix reluctantly allowed Querii the lead, practically bouncing in place as he waited for her way too short steps. The closer they got the more impatient he got and when they could see the entrance that CLEARLY led to somewhere horrible it was all he could do to hold himself back. "That's it isn't it? It has to be it." The butterflies were brighter down in the dim light and his sword was practically a beacon. It was almost surprising he wasn't wearing himself completely down with the constant magic- he hadn't been this upset for this long before.
Yavril
Querii nodded, "Yes, that's it." The place gave even her a shiver. There was a strange sense of foreboding about it, with the Wardens swarming like flies. She approached one of the guards warily. "Excuse me, my friends and I are here for Esrenniel."
raumlet
"Warden Fealla handles visitation. She'll assist you," the Warden said, pointing to an armored Warden behind the desk just inside the Garden before he turned away, clearly uninterested, and leaving them to approach the woman he'd indicated. As soon as they mentioned Esrenniel, she called another guard over and thumbed at Querii and her small group of saplings. "This lot wants to see the one we just brought in - aren't you the one he took from the Grove?" She added, giving Iudrix a once-over - it was difficult to miss his obvious distress, the fragmented butterflies around him. Her voice took on a reproachful edge. "Look at you. We do what we do to keep you newly awoken safe, not to torture you." She waved at them in dismissal, and the guard led them on into the Garden proper. Ren hadn't moved from his corner of the cell except to put his arms over his head; he knew he'd only been there for perhaps an hour at the most, but already, it felt like much longer. He was almost grateful he'd been left alone so far.
Brom
"I asked to go! I wasn't- I'm fine!" Iudrix answered as he had too many times before. He, thankfully, didn't dare argue with Fealla other than that one squawk of protest instead following the guard assigned to them . For a deepest fear the ambience seemed to match pretty well and the sapling found himself just staring around wide eyed instead of paying attention to anything useful- like exits. He almost missed Ren, despite his size. Almost. "Are you okay?!" He left the group, running up to the cage to grab the bars.
Yavril
Querii watched ludrix run towards Ren, but did not follow. This was clearly a moment of some kind. Instead, she turned to the Warden who'd spoken. "Esrenniel is of the utmost importance to our job, and a valued member of the Consortium," she'd apologize for pulling Consortium strings later, "And we need him released." It had occurred to her they might bar ludrix from leaving as some form of penalty, even though he was above the age restriction, but she hoped for the best. "We can pay any form of bail required."
raumlet
Even in the dim light, the tear tracks were evident on Ren's face when he lifted his head; hastily, he scrubbed his cheeks clear before he tottered to his feet. "W-what are you doing here? Go home," was the first thing out of his mouth as he joined Iudrix at the bars, his arms wrapped around himself. "Let Lil know. I'm - I'm fine. I've, uh... I've been in jail before." His voice whithered away as he spoke until Iudrix could barely hear him. "With all due respect, ma'am, the Consortium's power does not extend to the Grove," the Warden replied. "He'll be staying with us at least until the Warden Captain has had time to speak with him and decide on a suitable sentence."
Yavril
Querii frowned and brushed a loose bit of hair out of her face. "Who is the Warden Captain? Why is he not here? Let me speak to him, I'm sure we could come up with an arrangement." Duncan sighed and took a seat just outside the jails entrance. This might take a while.
Brom
"I'm gonna get you out of there," Iudrix half-whispered, pressing his face up against the bars. His eyes were most definitely pink now. "I don't know how but we will. Okay? Lil can find out later." He pulled back to look over his shoulder at the guard, still talking to Querii.
raumlet
"Please don't do that," Ren said weakly. "Please. That's a bad idea." "The Warden Captain is out his rounds, attending to his other duties. When he returns, then you can speak with him about an 'arrangement,'" the Warden said. He didn't make air quotes, but they were implied. "Before that, I'm afraid there's nothing we can do for you. No harm will come to him here."
Yavril
Querii had to think fast. She considered claiming Ren had some sort of illness and forcing them to release him, but the guard didn't look dumb enough to buy it, and even if he did believe her he might instead just put Ren into some form of solitary cage where they'd never be able to release him. She groaned, was it worth it to wait for the Captain? "Excuse me one moment," she finally said, and approached Ren's cell beside ludrix. "This might take a little while, Ren, but we will not leave without you." She didn't notice the tear stains until she got a better look at him, when she frowned. "Are you alright?" Ren's cellmate groaned loudly, but didn't shift.
Brom
"I don't care, it will work out. We'll get you out. We'll do it." Iudrix let go completely when Querii approached, looking down at her. "What did he say?" He jerked his attention back up to the guard, who was most definitely watching them. That was not the face of someone who was going to open up a cage or negotiate at all. The sapling's brow furrowed, another spike of fear but not for himself.
Yavril
Querii took her eyes off of Ren to look up unhappily at ludrix. "He said only the Warden Captain can release Esrenniel, and he's out on his rounds at the moment." She was still trying to figure out how to release Ren without waiting for the Captain, and didn't continue, instead trailing off into her own thoughts.
raumlet
Ren glanced nervously at his cellmate when she groaned, scooting closer to the bars as if they could protect him through the vines. "I'm - I'll be fine," he said, but his arms were still wrapped around himself. "The Warden Captain won't be gone all day. I think. I can wait."
Yavril
Querii frowned. "I am not convinced on either of those counts. What's upsetting you so much? Is it her," she asked, jutting her chin towards the other Sylvari in the cell, "because I can have you moved or... something. You're no use to us in this state."
Brom
Iudrix just shook his head in complete disagreement. "I'll make a portal." he said suddenly and ALMOST too loudly, a fluttering of butterflies matching his sudden intensity. "I can do it. Probably." He looked at the guard again.
raumlet
"Querii, I'm in jail," Ren said, his voice strained. "For something I - I didn't know wasn't acceptable anymore. Iudrix, don't, please! There - there has to be something we can do. Talk to the Warden Captain. I'm f-fine, it's alright."
Yavril
Querii shrugged. She supposed he must simply be more delicate about jail time than others - she herself had been in jail once (if only for attacking someone who insulted her work) and she'd seen others there. None of them were crying. But that was besides the point. "It... might not be a terrible plan. If you're this upset, I'd rather you not stay in here very long. And if he thinks he can do it..." She snuck another glance back at the guards.
Brom
"I- I need to be able to do it. You can't stay in here. You're not fine, you're locked away I have to." The pitch of his voice rose a bit as Iudrix tried to convince himself. It was just tearing a hole, right? The premise anyways. Without giving Ren another chance to complain the sapling shut his eyes, gritting his teeth and grabbing the bars with one hand and shoving the other between them. There was a moment of trembling anxious silence- and then a tear. It was not a circle at all, more of a jagged edged oval, like a broken mirror bright and pink in the dark. Thankfully, or maybe not so much, he'd managed to put the two sides close enough together and after a stunned moment he pushed right through. With no idea how long it would hold there was no time for apologies Iudrix wrapped his skinny arms around Ren and tried to pull him back with him.
Yavril
The Wardens, not being blind, of course noticed ludrix's sudden actions. "Hey!" One called out, gesticulating to try and get ludrix's attention. "What do you think you're doing?!" Querii bounced backwards, a little worried about her reputation, but there was no going back now. She couldn't freeze. She pulled out an expandable pole from her pack and held it like a staff - she wasn't going to hurt the Wardens, but she figured she might need to freeze a few in place.
raumlet
"Iudrix, don't!" was all Ren managed before those thin arms went around him and yanked - he resisted for a moment, pulling away from the quivering portal and the approaching guards, but he was already unsteady on his feet, and Iudrix's terror gave him greater strength than Ren expected. He was through the portal and out in a flash, nearly knocking Iudrix off his feet. Stunned, he swayed on his feet, clutching at Iudrix's arms.
Brom
As soon as they were through he stumbled, somehow managing to not fall over despite the two of them. Even going that short a distance hadn't been pleasant, it was still disorientating and travel of any of that sort still made his stomach roll. But they were through and alive and free and that- There was a horrible sharp sound as the dubious portal behind them popped and shattered in a spray of pink and purple without his continued focus. The suddeness of it was like a wrench back to reality and Iudrix immediately released Ren, looking to the warden that called out was now moving towards them far too fast for comfort. "C-can you run?" the question to Ren was more begging than requesting as the skinny sapling looked frantically around for Querii. Her legs were probably too short for real running. One of many, many things he had not considered.
Yavril
Run. Querii swore - there was no way she'd be able to keep up with these two while running. She supposed she could use her very basic elemental knowledge, but she'd never used it to traverse an area as large as the Grove before - and that's assuming it would work. She gripped tighter to her makeshift staff. Duncan heard the commotion and jumped up. "Wha-" he entered just quickly enough to see ludrix pull Ren through his vine-cage. Duncan stood flabergasped, with an open mouth. He had not signed up for jailbreaking.

"I - I don't want to!" Ren stammered, still hanging onto Iudrix's arms; he shrank back against the cell as the guards drew closer until his shoulders bumped into the bars - Iudrix may have let him go, but Ren's grip on him dragged him back along with him. A quick glance at Querii told him that she wasn't likely to be any help, what with that stick she was brandishing at the guards. "J-just let them put me back in the cell, please, and - and g-get Lil, please, Iudrix?" Barran had taken a seat by Duncan, balanced on the balls of her feet like before, and taken to bouncing the flat branches that served for her hair. When Duncan jumped up, she leaned forward until she could peer into the jail proper, then pursed her lips as she took in the scene. "...Maybe we aren't going to Kessex after all."
Yavril
"Oh no you don't," Querii muttered. She took a breath with closed eyes, felt the cool of water magic flood her system. With a swing of her staff towards the Wardens, she sent ice wrapping around their feet and shins, filling the air with cold. "It's too late, Esrenniel. Now - get moving," she gestured with her staff towards the exit in a wide, sweeping moment, "Before the rest of the Grove figures out what's going on! I'll take the saplings." One of the Wardens began to say something; "You'll-" Querii, though short, pressed her staff against his chest, "You want me to freeze your head?" She looked back at Ren and ludrix, "Come on, now!"
Duncan watched Querii, amazed. Water magic, but not the healing kind he'd always practiced with He was too distracted to be insulted at being called a sapling again. When Barran spoke, he looked back at her, "I have no clue, at this point."
Brom
Iudrix found himself dragged back against the bars and Ren, the world's worst shield. He didn't really have the strength left to truly fight it after that display, wings crunched up against the bigger sylvari as he twisted his head just enough to try to see Ren's face. "They can't put you back in there. I won't let them. It'll be worse if you don't run. Please!" Querii's magic would only buy them so much time, maybe not enough. At this point he wasn't even thinking about the two they'd dragged with them, it took him a moment when the asura mentioned them.
raumlet
Unfortunately, Ren was stuck fast just as effectively as the Wardens Querii had frozen to the floor, except fear kept him standing where he was, not magical ice. It wasn't until Iudrix whispered, "Ren!" in that fearful tone that Ren broke free - with a strangled noise, he lifted Iudrix and dashed towards the exit to the Grove as fast as his legs would take him. Barran's gaze tracked them as they passed, her brow cocked; she glanced over at Duncan, grinned broadly, and then sprang to her feet and was off after them.
Yavril
Duncan groaned - this was just like Barran - only hesitating a moment before chasing after her, considerably slower. "Wait up!"
Querii grinned as Ren and ludrix chased off into the Grove, and as Duncan and Barran followed close behind. She ran off with them, daring not to look back at the Wardens. They had a considerable head start on her, but she'd be damned if she was even a minute late. As she ran, a crazy idea came into her head. No, it was too crazy. But... No. No... Yes. Querii grinned - this would be interesting if it worked. She jutted her staff foreward, and a few feet ahead of her an oval of ice appeared, thick enough to hold her. She leapt on top of the cold piece, and with some admittedly annoying patience and focus, she managed to make the thing levitate. "Yes!" she cheered, and sped off into the distance and towards the Grove's entrance.
Brom
Iudrix didn't even complain when he was picked up, just relieved they were moving. He didn't complain when he was dropped a few strides later, either. Not even taking time to brush off his knees he quickly scrambled to his feet and kept going, fear forcing his legs moving even though he could already feel the burn. Not sure of what he'd see he didn't look back, trusting that Querii's cheer was a sign of a good thing. Somehow it was enough. Despite it all the whole lot of them managed to keep ahead and after a long stretch burst free into Caledon, leaving the arched entrance of home safe and unharmed. At least for now.

Ren hunched over the moment they stopped, his arms wrapped protectively over his head. "I - I am going to throw up," he said weakly, his voice a bare, wobbly whisper. "I can never go to the G-Grove again." Barran, however, was grinning ear to ear as she jogged up to them, Duncan thrown over her shoulders like a sack of flour. Kneeling, she dropped him off her shoulders and stretched.
Yavril
Querii slowed to a stop beside Barran and leaped off her ice-board. She took a few deep breaths to recover from the adrenaline high before glancing at Ren. The poor Sylvari was certainly... intense. "Of course you will," she told him, "The Wardens will forget this soon enough, and it isn't like your crime was all that bad."
Duncan groaned as Barran plopped him onto the ground with a thump. Her picking him up was unexpected to say the least - he hadn't even been that far behind! But he supposed he didn't give off a running vibe, and Barran had always seemed impulsive and bold. He was chuckling, though. Despite being carried over Barran's shoulder, the running from the Wardens had almost been fun. He decided to give Barran a hard time about it, though, and looked up at her angrily, albeit with an amused glint, "Thanks for that."
Brom
Iudrix dropped down next to Ren, breathing hard. "You're not locked up. That's what matters." He reached out, very carefully and slowly, to touch the other sylvari's arm with his fingertips. "I- I'm sorry. I couldn't leave you. I'm sure if- I'm sure there will be a point I can go explain to them."
raumlet
"Not that bad!" Ren stared over at her, incredulous. Fresh tears rolled down the fuzz on his face, and his chest heaved with a sob. "Maybe, maybe to start with, b-but - I - I broke out of jail! You attacked the Wardens!" Covering his face again with his trembling hands, he hunched over himself; he didn't pull away from Iudrix's hand, but he didn't lean into it, either. "You're very welcome," Barran said, her grin still in place. She thumped Duncan's arm playfully, nearly putting the smaller Sylvari off balance, before calling out to the others. "If we stay here much longer, won't the Wardens catch up?"
Yavril
Querii frowned. He was taking this harder than she had thought he would, but she wasn't over sensitive. Maybe the previous jail time she'd overheard about was causing some bad memories? Whatever the reason, Barran was right. "Yes. We need to move." She shot a glace at Duncan, an amused smirk on her face. "You coming, or is she going to carry you again?" Duncan had to hold himself very firm for Barran not to push him over. He pulled himself to his knees, then his feet, and looked down at Querii with attitude. "I'll be fine, thank you."
Brom
Iudrix stopped being delicate and just hugged him, pressing the half of his face that wasn't covered in thorny vines against Ren's side. "We'll go back to Kessex it will be okay. You're free." He gave an involuntary shudder himself, remembering the misery of that dark jail. "They're right, though, we have to keep going." The sapling was nowhere near stable himself, but at least he was putting on a decent show of it, even the flickering phantasms slowing down. Though that was more out of pure exhaustion than anything. "You're free now. You're free."
raumlet
The hug was much more effective than the simple touch - Ren leaned into him, although he made no effort to get up until Iudrix let him go. Still shaking, he pushed himself heavily to his feet and wiped his face on his sleeve. At this rate, he'd rub all the fuzz right off. "Iudrix," he said, "The cell wasn't - I - I didn't -" Helplessly, he shrugged, his hands loose at his side. He couldn't think how to explain that being confined didn't bother him, not to the sapling who was so scared of just that. "Let's... just go home."
Yavril
Querii had begun to move forward, gesturing for the rest to follow, until she heard Ren. Home. Few Sylvari called any place but the Grove really home. She wasn't sure what it meant about Ren, she didn't know enough about him yet, but it was enough to give her pause. "Come on," she repeated, but softer this time, beginning to realize she may need to be more careful around him than she was used to.
Brom
It took Iudrix a bit longer to get up after letting Ren go but he finally struggled to his feet. He took a deep breath and looked to Querii and the two they'd dragged along with them. "You'll like it, it's nice. The cliffs are- Just don't touch any of the elementals. Don't look at them, if you can help it." He hung his head a moment and took another breath before straightening up entirely. "Let's go." The sapling turned down the familiar path and started running again. Much slower than before.
Warnings: Is this emotional abuse?? I don’t even know how to warn for this. Lil’s really mean to Drix. Long, also done over Discord.
Lillica
Lillica hollered loud as she could for Ren and Iudrix to come quickly! The two were likely upstairs passing the time with cards, as they often did over the last two weeks. It was one of the better ways to waste away an afternoon, like any other afternoon, waiting for the new equipment. Even though Iudrix seemed less than capable of most games, for some reason he'd had a knack for cards. The reasoning was beyond Lillica, after hearing his age she doubted he'd had enough time to learn the rules. He just seemed guided by luck to a good hand for nearly every game. Luck, she thought, might go by a different name with him. It could just as well be another impact of the lingering chaotic signatures in his body. After all, she'd seen stranger reports in humans.
Today, though, they might finally get a chance to see what exactly was going on with the sprout. "The package has arrived," she declared when they finally reached the first floor of their Kessex Hills lab, "I already set up the first reader. The other two instruments will take a little tuning, but once we fix them up it'll finally give us what we've been waiting for."
Brom
Which cards were the ones you cared about when they don't match? Iudrix had been sitting there a good minute or two trying to figure it out, his turns always dragged. Just as he was finally about to go- Lillica yelled. Just spreading the cards out across the floor the sapling turned and started to get up, scrambling to try to figure out if something- blew up? It was a possibility. Luckily he was wrong. "The package? Oh." He'd stopped wilting a couple days in, but his posture did visibly sag now. "Right."
raumlet
Luckily, Ren was a patient partner in cards, although it had less to do with actual patience and more with the fact that his thoughts were whirring away at top speed. Every time Iudrix's turn rolled around, he tuned out and let himself daydream - the last smelting tests had actually been successful (mostly), which meant that if he could replicate it on a larger scale, maybe... finally....
Lil's shout jolted him out of his thoughts as he waited on the sapling; dropping his cards as well, he pushed himself to his feet and followed Iudrix sedately down the stairs. It wasn't likely to be anything dangerous, from the tone of her voice. His first impulse when Iudrix slumped at his side was to remind him - again - that the contract he'd signed only pertained to that one test. He'd harped on about that enough, though, and Iudrix had simply shrugged every time. "What sort of readings?" was all he said as he squatted down and began to stuff the unwound packaging paper back into the shredded boxes.
Lillica
"Iudrix has mentioned two particularly fascinating alterations to his perception of the world. First, he seems to view all things red as pink, purple, or something in between. Second, there is the matter of his hand, and that phantom sword, so to speak. It's visible, but only to him, and only when moving. Otherwise Iudrix stated that it really doesn't have an impact on his life. With what the higher ups finally approved, these instruments of measurement, we can finally figure out exactly what's going on here." Lillica heaved a massive stony block from one of the shorter boxes, setting it to rest at Iudrix's feet. When she flicked a button, a massive screen popped up above it. "Asuran holomancy. Isn't it magnificent? With this one calibrated, we might even get a rough visual on what Iudrix is seeing."
Brom
Iudrix, of course, didn't bother with the cleanup. Instead he just watched Lil as she dumped the screen at his feet. Hesitantly the sapling reached out to touch the holoscreen, not even considering maybe he shouldn't yet. "So it's an illusion? Illusions to see illusions?" The pain he'd originally felt after the experiment when conjuring his own little illusions had faded over the days like a healing sunburn, but he was still wary. Or, at least, slightly more wary than he had been before. "Are we going to repeat...?" His voice trailed off and he looked at Lillica. Specificly avoiding Ren's eyes.
Lillica
Lillica shook her head, "Not at all. Any further testing on you wouldn't be worth keeping, you are no longer at a basic, control state. If I wanted to test the effects of chaos leakage on sylvari again, I'd need another, untouched sylvari. Besides, we don't have any more batteries. It'll take quite awhile before I can start project Zezzifer again and make more, you know how finding help is. These devices," she patted the holo-projector, "Are specifically to figure out what's going on with you. Once we understand, I might ask you to do a thing or two, and afterwards your condition should start improving. I can't say you'll be as good as new, but at least we'll make you more comfortable. Now Ren, have you gotten the other instruments out yet? I'd like to have everything set up outside as soon as possible, Iudrix has waited long enough as it is."
Brom
That explanation seemed to make him happy enough. Iudrix snapped back to his regular posture, goofy and tall as it was. "I'm already comfortable. There's- there's really not much wrong anymore. I barely even notice." It was true, he felt positively normal now. But as with all things when it came to Drix, he really didn't have a great grasp on what normal WAS. It'd been so fast he'd left, and faster still he broke, by this point he'd lived twice as long in the state the experiment had left him then he had untouched. "Maybe if you see it, though, it won't be so bad I broke the gun." Without further hesitation he went to put his palm flat against the screen if he could- shooting it straight through if he couldn't.
raumlet
"No," Ren said, looking up as Iudrix's hand slapped to a halt against the screen, "But I will. All this? Or something else?" He waved vaguely at the unopened boxes around them.
Lillica
"The other stuff is mostly connectors, power converters, and tools to help calibrate anything that's off," she answered, shutting off the holoscreen again, and starting outside with it. "Just make sure everything's running, and anything that isn't probably needs a cord or crystal from the other boxes. Simple. Iudrix, could you step outside again? Just over there, like last time, but you can move around if you want while we get this ready."
It took surprisingly little time for all the equipment to get dialed in. By the end of it there were three other main pieces, again pumping out graphs and other data, with the holoscreen at the center. Lillica and Ren were behind it. They powered it up, and the screen flashed into existence- a charming violet glowing square in the air. Through it was Iudrix. Lillica turned some knobs and inserted a crystal, one of the ones she'd sources from the mine that fed her batteries and once many years ago, the Thaumanova. "This works," she said, and a moment later Ren could see it too. The screen had lit up, a shining of bright light was now blocking Iudrix's eyes in their view. The rest of his body was lined with duller, sometimes barely visible patterns, like white veins crossing his body. It occurred to Lillica that they may include fact be the vessels, contaminated by chaotic energy. Most striking of all was the sprout's hand. It was completely obscured by a shimmering white sword, or at least it appeared as white on their screen. The sword seemed old, chipped in places, and missing a tip. It shines brighter yet whenever Iudrix moved his hand, for these were the times he claimed to see it.
"I think I'm beginning to understand," Lillica giggled, "There really is a sword." She was overjoyed at this realization. Although it certainly appeared to be an anomaly, this was still a magnificent find.
Brom
At Lillica's request he obediently stepped outside, though he was too curious to move around much. Instead he just watched with his head slightly tilted, still not understanding a lick of all that equipment. Once he was aware they were actually looking he did move a bit, waving his hand slowly up and down before going still again. "In my dream I had a sword. N-not a particular one. No guns. I don't know if- that wouldn't have anything to do with it?" His tone was a little hurried, there was a twang of worry in it again. "I can't see it very well."
raumlet
"...Huh," Ren said from where he was hunched over next to Lil to peer through the screen. As concerned as he was, he couldn't keep the note of curiosity out of that small noise - this was fascinating, really, now that Iudrix seemed to be... not okay, exactly, but stable and relatively happy. He straightened up to peer over the screen at Iudrix, who looked perfectly normal out there with the sun beating down on him and no glowing sword in his hand, then bent back down to peer through the screen again. "The gun... became a sword? I don't really understand. I suppose that's a hallmark of chaos magic," he muttered, more to himself than anything.
Lillica
"Chaos magic does have a tendency to make things into other things. Morphing is kind of its strong point. The original Zezzifer was a veritable bounty of chaotic energy, and project Zezzifer's goal was to recreate other such existences. The last one was coherent long enough to instill it's essences into a battery, the one you tested. I guess that it only makes sense for such transmutations to occur."
Lillica trailed off in her speech as she started looking over the data. Their new graphs were particularly intriguing, the spikes indicated that by Florpp's Second Inquiry into Chaos, the sword and possibly some of the energies by Iudrix's eyes could be made tangible.
Lillica decided to focus on the sword. Eyes were much too precious to risk unpredictable magic interactions. "Iudrix, I'm finding this all very fascinating. From the look of it, Ren is too," she giggled again, for it had been weeks since she last saw him smiling, or even hinting at interest in the project, "I think I have an idea on how to deal with the sword. Iudrix I know you aren't very old, but are you able to cast any spells? Any magic at all? I want to know absolutely everything you're capable of."
Brom
"I haven't tried much. I know I can do more, but I think I'm missing the first steps." The stuff he would have been guided towards, had he actually listened and stayed in the grove where he belonged. "I can show you some butterflies I guess. I haven't really tried anything bigger." He paused. "I- I could probably move across the room again, I think. I feel like I remember what that felt like to do. It wasn't pleasant though." He was smiling too, now, a small, unsure grin that was almost sweeter than a wide one.
Lillica
Lillica let out a quiet sigh, "hmmm.... I'm not sure. Let's think. I have a theory, but it's not exactly scientific. But to make anything of it, I'd need more chaos energy, and it's got to be directed and controlled. Neither of these I can do, not right now, not with what we have here, and certainly not anytime soon. I know Mesmers have a vast repertoire of chaotic magic at their disposal, but I'm not sure which spells actually carry chaotic energy."
raumlet
"We could have him try out what spells he knows and see," Ren said. He'd dropped his eyes guiltily when Lil giggled - the last thing he wanted was to continue testing on Iudrix, but... it was interesting! He couldn't lie and say it wasn't.
Brom
Iudrix scratched the back of his neck with one hand, the one without the sword. "I can make some butterflies, if you want." He shifted his weight a little bit, feeling a little awkward now that he was putting on a show. After a deep breath he finally closed his eyes and made a couple simple gestures, ephemeral pink bug-lights following it. It was... incredibly unimpressive.
Lillica
Lillica eyed them, but it didn't seem right. She saw them with her own two eyes, but on screen none of them flashed. "Hmmm, that's not right. They don't seem to be registering as chaos, do they Ren?" She looked to him for assurance. Typically, she'd see chaotic energy in the form of refractions, fractals, and odd jagged patterns. The only times I took shape were when it was impacting something else, such as a gun, or a mesmer's tendency to produce butterflies. Otherwise, chaotic magic remained ever changing, formless in its resistance to take form for itself.
raumlet
Ren shook his head - even through the screen, they just looked like... well... butterflies, even as they shattered and faded out of sight. "You know," he said softly, "Gene... She's a mesmer. If Iudrix doesn't know anything that's useful for this, Gene can teach him. Probably," he added hurridly, raising his hands. "I... I can't say that she'll have time. Or even want to. And it'd be a while before she got here... But I'll write her. Iudrix, is there anything else you can try? Would a weapon or a focus help?”
Brom
The smile vanished and Iudrix' wings drooped. He stopped with the butterflies. "No. Probably not. I'm not real good at much of anything." He sighed, looking at the ground. "It wouldn't get your gun back anyways. And that stuff kinda hurt." The last bit was real quiet, the sylvari sort of mumbling to himself.
Lillica
"Gun be damned, now that I can actually see what's going on I'm much more interested in you. Ren, don't forget to document everything."
Lillica stood up to walk out towards Iudrix, "From what I've learned chaotic energies typically manifest in the chronomancy, phantasmal, and glamour aspects of Mesmery. They can crop up elsewhere for sure, but it takes more effort. I don't suppose you know anything of illusions or glamour fields?" She crossed her fingers. Anything would do, they just needed a hint of it. Just a bit to top off the sword, if her theory was correct. A null or refraction field, a phantasm, even just a little one would provide all they need. Suddenly Lillica had a thought. "You know Iudrix, I'm not sure if you ever were taught the difference between illusions and phantasms, but if you were.... Could you whip up a phantasmal butterfly?"
The thought of it made her lips curl into a smile again. Mesmery always focused on making things look like other things, always people as people, or charr as charr, or sylvari as sylvari. But these shapes were complex, and likely beyond Iudrix. So what about butterflies? He could make those. So then why not make it less visible but more tangible? Would it truly draw a natural link to chaos?
raumlet
Ren's brow had creased as Iudrix spoke, his shoulders sagging. If it hurt to cast - that wasn't encouraging, in his book. "Lil," he said, still hunched over by the screen, "If this is still causing him pain, maybe we should postpone testing... ? There's no rush. Has the pain been getting better, Iudrix?"
Brom
He shook his head. "It doesn't hurt ANYMORE. I mean- the chaos did. Before. It hurt a bit after but it's okay now." Iudrix considered Lillica's works, furrowing his brow. "I wasn't- really taught anything. Not um. Not before I left. Showed once so I knew where I would be going but..." Head still dipped and brow still furrowed he closed his eyes, focusing on concepts that seemed to dance just out of his reach. "Phantasms- they DO things, right? Instead of just being there?"
Lillica
Lillica nodded her head, "Exactly. They are tangible, they can interact with things on a much greater scale. Regular illusions simply effect the senses, maybe inflicting a small psychological wound, but otherwise the purpose is distraction and misdirection. I think that if you can step your butterflies from illusions to phantasms, by the nature of magic it will naturally be infused with a tiny essence of chaos. It makes sense, really. That's their purpose. Chaos."
After all, it would be the easiest way to grant an illusion enough independence to act without the maker's will.
raumlet
Ren looked between Lil and Iudrix, then held his hands up. "Alright. Fine. I'll go get the typewriter." Pushing himself upright, he headed back into the house to fetch what he needed.
Brom
Tangible. Physical. Iudrix focused on the thought, concentrating in silence as he tried to bring some sort of thing into existence. Whatever he was doing seemed to be doing something as little slices of light cut through the air, hanging only moments before fading completely. His frown deepened, the frequency of the lights intensifying alongside his annoyance-- and suddenly he stopped, opening his eyes. They blinked out. "It's not working. I can't."
Lillica
Lillica sighed, scratching her brow. "You almost had it. If you really won't be able I guess there's not much I can say but first... Try this." She moved to be three feet in front of Iudrix, "Mesmers are... Well they're a lot of things. There are many types. And although I'm working most closely with chronomancers, I have also come to understand a thing or two about chaos. I want you to make your butterflies again. Just normal ones. As many as you can, right in front of you, and quick, before Ren comes back."
Brom
Iudrix nodded once and took a deep breath to calm himself. "Alright." he managed a bit of a smile. "I can do that." Closing his eyes he tilted his palms up to almost cup the air in front of him. There was a moment of nothing and then, without warning, a swarm of purple and pink, flashing and glowing and dancing between him and the screens. It was, perhaps, the most impressive thing he'd managed to do on purpose so far.
Lillica
Lillica's face stiffened, "Iudrix, it is as Ventari teaches. Hard ground makes for stronger roots. Please, remember this."
She took another deep breath, then circle Iudrix as she talked, keeping the same three step distance between them. "You are sylvari, fruit of the pale tree, child of the dream. In your life, there has already been a wealth of knowledge bestowed upon you. Look back, think of the time before emerging. Sometime, somewhere, you saw it. A phantasm. Or maybe you only ever saw a warrior carrying a great shield. Perhaps a stone wall, or if not that, a great Oak. You have already witnessed fortitude in the dream. Remember this image of something that cannot be pushed through."
She stopped circling Iudrix now, "Two weeks ago, you first experienced pain. Not someone else's, and not the small scrape of a knee or bite of your cheek. It was a rending, frightening, unfamiliar and horridly real experience. Even now you are scarred. Please, just for a moment, remember that fear, remember that pain, and know that it isn't over."
Lillica suddenly tugged a pistol from her belt, titled the Ruinmaker by its created, and pointed it straight at Iudrix, then pulled the trigger-A blast of smoke, light, and immeasurable fear.
raumlet
That noise was unmistakable - Ren had heard it too many times to not know what it was, especially so close, right outside his front door. Garenhoff was safe. That was one reason they'd chosen this place. No centaurs breathing down their necks, the ettin kept at bay by the elementals; they were free to work without worrying. So there was absolutely no reason for Lil to be firing her gun -
The typewriter hit the stairs with a noisy crash that definitely meant bent keys, but Ren had already vaulted down the steps and was halfway to the front door before it had time to reach the bottom of the stairs. "LILLICA!”
Brom
The sapling's eyes snapped open as Lil began to talk, following her movements through the veil of butterflies as she slowly circled. Slowly but surely his expression dropped from mild confusion to pure, unadulterated fear. The sort of black hole of fear that swallowed everything into itself- thoughts, actions, wisdom. And when she pulled the trigger? The butterflies exploded outward. They were tangible alright. A thousand glittering shards of broken pink and purple stained glass in a meaningless spray that cut anything the delicate edges of their wings touched. Him. Lillica. The wall.
Lillica
Lillica grinned despite her freshly split lip. The floor had been coated in glue, sprayed across all kind of magnificent patterns, bare wherever a shard had block it. When Iudrix finally regained his composure, he would see that one of the shards had pressed against his phantom sword, right at the missing tip. Only the difference between shard and sword was gone. In fact, the butterflies hadn't been the only things changed solid. Now complete, Iudrix found himself holding a new blade. A purple, ethereal, in places chipped blade. "Congratulations," Lillica said, "I think we can call this one a success. Keep the blade, chances are it's attuned to you now anyways. I'd like to study it, if possible, but I understand if you'd rather leave. And I am sorry."
With that, Lillica stepped back inside, brushing past Ren as he rushed out to try and make sense of what had happened.
raumlet
"LIL -" Ren caught either side of the door to halt himself, his eyes wide, and surveyed the wreckage of the terrace. The wood was pitted and chipped now, coated in glue where it wasn't torn up, and Lil was striding past him with sap already trickling down her chin and a neat slice in the collar of her jacket; he gaped at her, then out at Iudrix before his eyes dropped to the sticky glue splattered across the planks and Iudrix's shoes.
"Y-you - You shot him?!" He stammered back down the hall at Lil's back, his voice rising with each word. "You SHOT HIM? LILLICA! Lil - Iudrix -"
Ren dashed to Iudrix's side and reached for his arm with a hand that shook, not just with anxiety, but with a restrained tension that thrummed through him as he looked the sapling over for injury. "If I - I d-didn't know - she was going to, to - to lose her mind and - " His voice cut off, choked; he pressed his other hand to his face for a moment and fought to control his trembling body. "Y-ou, are you - you're n-n-not -" Iudrix was still on his feet, which at least meant he wasn't immediately dead. That was a starting point.
Brom
Iudrix was practically mint colored he was so pale, his eyes still wide with that bottomless fear. He trembled in complete and utter silence as he just stared at Ren, a cut across one cheek highlighting his terrified expression. The hand Ren didn't grab held a sword now, yes, but the fact it was as real as he was didn't even register in his mind. Nor did the many, many shallow slices across his bare arms. Lillica's congratulations had just sort of rung hollow across a numb comprehension. The sapling stayed silent.
raumlet
At a loss, Ren did the only thing he could think of - he pulled Iudrix, sword and all, into his shaking arms and hugged him. It wasn't a very good solution, but what could he say? 'Sorry for letting her scar you' seemed insufficient, even if he thought he could trust himself to speak. He should have known better than to leave him alone with her; he should have known better than to bring a young mesmer around her in the first place.
Lillica
Lillica stumbled into her room and barely managed to lock the door before collapsing into her bed. "Hard ground..." She mumbled, but it was hollow now. The plan had worked, yet in a way so much more spectacular-- and in fact terrifying way than she imagined. That wasn't a shield Iudrix had made. It was an outright attack. Lillica remembered that often, early magic users project their art onto the world with whatever is most natural, in a form that reflects the inside. Mesmers, as mages of the mind, were particularly prone to such behavior. Sylvari even more so, being capable, emotional, and able to act despite little true life experience when they emerge. Iudrix had shaped and immediately shattered his mass of butterfly phantasms, and in such a display that he was almost certainly a fractured mess on the inside. "Damn it..."
Brom
He was so thin when someone finally got their arms around him, tall yes but in the end there really wasn't much to Iudrix. "I think I'm done doing magic for now," he mumbled, still trembling, into the bigger sylvari's shirt. "I'm not really shot. I'm okay." It was just as much to reassure himself as it was to reassure Ren. "I didn't hurt you did I?"
raumlet
Ren shook his head against Iudrix's ear. He'd been a moment getting outside, long enough for the danger to pass - although he supposed Iudrix might not have seen that, being understandably distracted. "I-I'm fine, but you..." he said, his voice still trembling. Iudrix himself... Ren hadn't missed the nicks and scratches covering him, the trickle of sap here and there. He went to push Iudrix away from him to examine him again - and his shirt went with the other Sylvari, stuck firmly to his own. Ren blinked down at the fabric, then at the glue still puddled around their feet. "...Well."
Brom
Oh. That was glue. Iudrix looked down at his chest stuck to Ren's shirt and let out a strangled laugh. It was sort of a desperate torn sound more than anything of real amusement, tears welling up in his eyes. "Sorry. I didn't know." He lifted the pink sword as if to try to cut the pieces of his own leafy shirt away, the motion smooth as if the weapon was just a natural piece of him.
raumlet
"It's okay, it's okay," Ren said hurriedly, catching Iudrix's wrist and pushing his hand back down. The transparent blade made him uneasy. "The glue is water-soluble. That means this isn't permanent, it's just... strong. There's a shower out back. Problem is, um..." He looked down at their feet. His own, he could tear up, but Iudrix's shoes were coated with the tacky-drying glue and were firmly affixed to the terrace. "If I lift you, can you kick your shoes off?"
Brom
Iudrix nodded, wiping his eyes with the arm that didn't have a sword at the end of it. The cuts stung but he barely noticed- luckily most of them were more akin to papercuts, though there were quite a few slightly deeper. Nothing too serious. "I should have realized she wouldn't really kill me."
raumlet
Ren squatted as much as he could with his shirt glued to Iudrix's, shifted his arms to loop at the top of his thighs, and hefted him up as Iudrix worked his feet free of his boots. His own shoes turned out to be stuck firmer than he'd expected - he kicked them off and tiptoed across the tacky-dry glue coating the planks, grimacing each time his feet peeled off the wood with a tiny sucking sound.
"She didn't have to - to terrorize you. I know someone who could have trained you," he muttered against Iudrix's shoulder. He headed around the corner of the building to the cramped alley, where a makeshift chemical shower had been set up. Stopping under the showerhead, he dropped Iudrix and reached for the pull-chain. "I'm sorry, it'll be cold."
Brom
He was just real quiet as Ren lifted him, not even complaining about being carried despite the fact he was perfectly capable of walking on his own. The flat of his sword thumped against Ren's leg a couple times as they moved, the pink tip dragging in the dirt. He stopped trembling along the way- only to start again when the cold water splashed across his face. Not that he was complaining, not at all. "It worked, though." He finally replied, dipping his head beginning to work on tearing apart their shirts.
raumlet
"That doesn't..."Ren shook his head sadly. Their shirts peeled apart only reluctantly, both leaves and cotton still sticky with glue, but they did come apart - Ren pulled his shirt off and rinsed it out under the showerhead as soon as he was free, wringing the fabric out a few times. The water beaded up on his fuzzy skin and rolled off until he stepped out from under the spray. "It - it wasn't okay. The ends don't... don't always justify the means. Get the worst of it off? I'll, uh, grab towels."
Ren brushed past Iudrix to the back door and disappeared inside; he would be back in just a few minutes with towels and a shirt for Iudrix to wear until his own sopping clothes dried out. He held them out for Iudrix and then turned his back to give the sapling some privacy. "Did you... W-would you like me to take you back to the Grove?"
Brom
The sapling just left his shirt soaking on the ground, staring down at it the whole time Ren was gone, water droplets running down from the vines on his head through the leafy grooves in his cheeks. When the other returned he took the towel with quiet thanks, setting down his sword so he could start to dry off. The question made him pause mid-motion. "I wasn't there long enough to have a place. By now- I'm probably forgotten." It had been two weeks after all. Which was forever!
raumlet
"I wouldn't think so. They - they would welcome you back, even if they did," Ren said softly, his back still turned. He folded his hands in front of him and fiddled with a burn scar on his knuckle; the skin was shiny and bare. "The Wardens still remember me. Not exactly fondly, but they do. If... if you want to go back, I'll take you. If you want to stay here, you can, but..."
Brom
"I- I- don't know. I didn't like being told I couldn't go- they'd just do the same thing wouldn't they? At least here I can go if I want. Right?" That panic rose again in his throat as he suddenly realized that might not be the case. That carefree trust had been shattered and now he wasn't sure of anything anymore. "I can leave any time? Just go?" He picked up the sword with his free hand.
raumlet
"Iudrix, I..." Ren risked a glance back over his shoulder at Iudrix, his hands still clasped in front of him, when he heard the faint ring of the sword as the sapling picked it up. "I can't force you, but I - I would like you to stay, or to go back to the Grove because I - I would worry. If you just left, you... y-you don't have anywhere to go. And maybe that would be okay, but - "
Ren dropped his eyes to his hands, thinking of the way he'd been looked at in Divinity's Reach - the distrust. The fear. "I would worry, Iudrix."
Brom
"Yeah. Well. I'm fine. I'd be fine. I'd find somewhere." His voice had a choke to it as he answered, tone a little harsh. His emotions were still a horrible whirl, clashing as the fog of shock wore off. Iudrix fought his way into the clean shirt Ren brought, unwilling to put that sword down despite the fact putting shirts on was a difficult task on the best of days. Finally he pulled it down over his skinny chest.
raumlet
Ren sighed heavily and dropped his hands; he glanced over his shoulder again, checking to see if Iudrix was dressed. "Maybe. Probably, actually. I mean..." He shrugged his bare shoulders. In all honesty, what had Ren done for him? Other than bring him to someone who had permanently damaged him within his first week of life. Iudrix may have been better off if Ren had just left him in the Grove; even if he'd run off, how much worse could it have been for him? Lamely, he finished, "You don't have to stay."
Brom
For a moment Iudrix just stood there, holding his sword so tight it was a wonder his knuckles didn't glow. Then, without warning, he turned. And started running. His boots were long gone but Iudrix didn't even notice- his focus was not on why or where but do. He had to know if he was free.
Lillica
Lillica watched her latest subject run off into the wilds. "Zezzifer Battery Subject One," she whispered as she wrote, "Dismissed." The pain hanging in her last word was failure manifested in voice. Counting the initial Zezzifer subjects, she had lost three volunteers now. It was a 100% rate of abandonment. The teams from her previous trials, despite being spared from any physical pain, had also left. Apparently the nature of Lillica's inquiry took a special sort of resilience to follow, a type that so far she had yet to find in anyone else. It didn't matter. Someday, she would be able to do the next trial. Someone would volunteer, and whether or not they quit in the end, Lillica would amass ever more data, ever more key findings, so that someday (perhaps not soon) free energy might be available to all.
raumlet
"Iudrix!" Ren chased him to the end of the alley, but there he stopped - he laced his fingers behind his head stood there watching the sapling go, uncertain and anxious, before forcing himself to turn around. Scooping their wet shirts up off the ground, he went back inside, slamming the back door with more force than was absolutely necessary.
Ren made the mistake of making eye contact and ended up with a sapling in tow. Lillica takes advantage of this turn of events!

Iudrix stopped midway through the opening to fiddle with his bag. It was a shiny new thing, a backpack that had clearly never been dumped in the mud or any dirt at al. Not that it would stay so pretty long with the way he had shoved so many things so haphazardly in. Wadded up cloth practically spilled out, the thin Sylvari trying to fit it back in with brute force alone.
Esrenniel shuffled his way down the walkway, bowed under the weight of the bag hanging off his back; he cradled it awkwardly with one arm to minimize the footing. This bag was tattered and worn, clearly well-used. The strap was frayed and had been stitched clumsily back together at one point.
Drix looked up suddenly, jerking to attention and spilling the wad of fabric to the floor. It was a shirt, looked like. He relaxed after a moment, clearly having had expected someone else. "Oh, uh."
Ren caught the other Sylvari's eye and winced inwardly - now he'd done it. He'd made eye contact. "Uh," he said, paused, then tried again. "Did you... did you need help?" Nevermind that his own bag was cutting into the soft curve of his shoulder.
Drix immediately looked to the side as soon as eye contact was made. He awkwardly bent down to grab up the shirt again, trying to just stuff it back in the bag. "No, nope. I’m fine. Just gonna... Uh, sleep near the Night Garden. Yeah." He forced a dumb grin, painfully guilty.
Ren looked between the overflowing bag and the Sylvari's guilty grin, his brow creased in confusion. His own heavy bag begged him to move on, but... “Are... you sure?" He asked, tipping his head.
Drix nodded a few too many times. Then stopped. Leaving the shirt to spill out again he pushed some of the vines that stood for hair out of the side of his view. “I’m fine but it looks like maybe you could use a hand. I'll just help you out and then Turn Around And Come Right Back Home." That last part was said just a tad bit too loudly, the thin sylvari glancing back over his shoulder.
Ren blinked, his brows creeping closer together in confusion as he craned His nego to lock behind the other. Um. You... probably shouldn't? These are uh... They're bombs," he said. “I... I had forgotten them." He grinned awkwardly and went to shrug, then stopped as his cargo jostled. “Is, uh... Are you being followed?”
Drix hunched up his shoulders, an indigo glow lighting up his cheeks as he blushed. "Uh, ah, no. I'm just- Well everyone keeps telling me to stay in the Grove. With the -” he waved a hand, a pink butterfly flickering in and out with the motion. "Things. Going on." The sylvari paused. “I’m not afraid of bombs."
Ren muttered, "Still..." and shifted the strap on his shoulder. He'd heard similar - but the Dragon's call was distant for him, easy enough to tune out if he had something to focus on. "I don't have very far to go," he lied, then held a hand out for one of the shirts spilling out of the pack. "Where were you headed? I could help you there. Oh, ah, I'm Esrenniel.”
Drix just pointed, letting Esrenniel take the shirt. It had too many arm holes. "That way. Or.” He frowned momentarily and shifted the point a little more to the north. "That way. Not to the snow, of course. But maybe close. I'm Iudrix."
Ren blinked, looked between the shirt and the wings sprouting from Iudrix’s back.”Oh, I’d….assumed. That those were decorative, I mean," he said. "How - where were you headed?"
Drix sorted! "Of course they are. I'm not a wasp. Otherwise I'd fly right out." He hesitated at the question. "Okay, so, I'm not necessarily... the most sure. saw a lot of things and... Well."
Ren stammered, "Oh - no - I meant - that is, ah, that they weren't... real? Obviously they aren't, uh, functional." He made an awkward gesture, shirt in hand. “I mean… Ah. I was headed to Kessex.”
Drix shook his head. He twisted a bit, showing that the leafy shirt didn't quite close across his back and the wings were in fact part of his shape. "...Are they that weird? I see other people with stuff stickin' out, maybe I should see if it would hurt to um, trim." He spun back, a little more lively now that it was very plainly obvious Ren wasn't going to scold him for running off. "Then again, can they grow back? I - that's a serious question." He bit his lower lip.
Ren waved the shirt again in a negative. "No, no," he said quickly, wringing the cloth between his hands. "It- it would probably hurt. But it would grow back? Or should? I’ve regrown a finger." Ren glanced down at his hands. "It, ah. It hurt. The entire process was uncomfortable."
Drix rolled his shoulders experimentally, considering. "...Yeah, I don't think need to experience that yet," he finally replied, just a simple statement. “Rolling over on your own limbs when you sleep is probably a lot less uncomfortable."
Ren couldn't help but laugh a bit. “I, ah, it was... I would suggest avoiding it if possible. Why... Uh." Looking down at the shirt in his hand, Ren frowned. “If...If you don't mind my asking, why are you leaving the Grove?"
Drix looked down at the bag still tucked in the crook of his elbow. "I feel like should. That's what we're supposed to do, isn't it? Do what we were meant to? It’s like…” He frowned. "An itch. I guess. I dreamed of a lot of places, and I know they weren't these. I checked." The frown wavered and faded, the thin sylvari smiling softly again.
Brow creased, Ren considered the pack slung over Iudrix's shoulder. "Well. Yes, that's... not... it isn't untrue; 'Where life goes, so too should you,'" he said, losing the stammer as he repeated the lesson he'd learned by heart. "I've, ah, never felt that one applied to me. Not particularly. It's just that, um, are you... prepared?"
Drix considered it a moment, silently counting as he looked over his pack. "Well, I have swords. And shirts. And some water. I'm sure I'll find whatever I need when I get there." Wherever 'there' was. Iudrix nodded once in self-confirmation. "Yeah, I think I'm prepared."
"But... Do you - Uh." Ren scratched his head, waffling between offering advice and knowing his place; he'd only just met this sapling, and, well, he was a sapling himself, truth be told. Perhaps a more seasoned one - the singed fuzz on his fingers spoke to that - but a sapling nonetheless. "Can you... use the swords?"
Iudrix bit his lower lip. "Can't be too hard." His smile wavered again, but only for a moment. Without the extra shirt the bag was easy to shut so he did, tossing it over his shoulder in a stubborn show of determination. "I'm sure I'll be fine, it's what I am supposed to do."
"Oh," Ren said, still holding the shirt limply in one hand. His eyes were wide under his spiky brow. "Iudrix, that's, I'm... Uh, Swords are... more difficult than that? Where - what were you going to do, again? If... uh, if you're going to be alone, maybe... Maybe you should speak to your Luminary?"
"Shoulda guessed you'd tell me not to, too." The thin sylvari heaved a sigh. "I feel so trapped." he sunk back against the wall, slowwwlllyyy sliding down until he was sitting on the floor in a leafy pile of failure. "Probably just get dragged back again," he mumbled under his breath. The bag was squished now but it didn't matter anyways.
"I-I'm sorry," Ren stammered as he squatted down next to Iudrix; he lowered his own bag carefully to the ground and slipped the strap off his shoulder, then set to wringing the shirt between his hands. "It's - it's just that - I mean - " Gesturing helplessly with the shirt did nothing to move his thoughts from his brain to his tongue, but he did it anyway before switching tactics. "I-I've been to Southsun. With my friend. And it's horrifying! Even Kessex - krait, and elementals, and ettin? Tyria is... it's... It isn't a very safe place."
Iudrix gave a halfhearted shrug. "I haven't been anywhere. Just... here." He went quiet, thinking to himself. Considering. "I don't really want to wait for some dragon to die before I get to start living. Seems like the more I keep asking though, the less I'm gonna be allowed to do."
"That's - that isn't true," Ren said, waving his hands. “I - I'm only a few months old, and I-I, I've done a lot. But I... I can fight, and. Um." Pausing to scratch his head nervously, Ren fiddled with the strap of his bag and looked around, as if some escape from this awkward conversation would conveniently present itself. "If, uh, you... can't take care of yourself, you could get hurt. Or, um. Die."
"I'm sure I can fight too, when it comes down to it," the sapling replied dismissively. He sighed. "I don't see why death matters if you don't get to live in the first place. And I'm not really, here. It's like an itch I can't scratch or something." Iudrix shifted to his side a bit in order to draw one of his glass like swords, awkwardly resting it across his knees. "Can't be too hard. I figure it's probably like magic, you gotta just manage to do the right thing once and remember it."
Ren raked his fingers through his spikes again. "Not... not quite. Magic is - it's innate? As far as I can tell? But fighting," he shook his head. "I picked up a rifle in my Dream, but - it wasn't the same when I woke. The weight of it - and, uh. The knockback. Things don't impact you in the Dream like they do when you're awake. I almost splintered my collarbone the first time I fired my rifle when I woke."
"I had swords, but I didn't use them really... Mostly it was the butterflies." He gestured, waving free a couple of the little illusionary pink bugs which quickly faded away. "Not that.... I really fought anything in the first place." Iudrix rested his forearms on the flat side of the sword, looking over at Ren to give him another wavering little smile. "I mostly just... was. Haven't quite figured out what that really means, cept that I'm not supposed to just stay here."
"You - y-you couldn't find something to do? Have you spoke to your Luminary?" Ren asked, without much hope. His own Luminary had quickly grown tired of Ren's presence, given that it usually came with the Wardens at his elbow and some complaint to register. With the number of Sylvari awakening every day, the poor Luminaries had their hands full. "At least you should ask for, well, training. Of some sort."
"Not something I wanted to do... I want to move, not train." The thin sapling gave a shrug, letting his head droop a bit as he considered his choices. Even his wings looked wilted. "I know I SHOULD listen to them, but I don't think I'll be anything but frustrated. Maybe if I had a little bit of their patience I would, but I'm pretty sure I lack it altogether." He lifted his eyes to give Ren another half-smile.
raumlet
"Training is moving! Well, of... of a sort. I-it would keep you busy," Ren hurried to reply, helpless against that little smile, but Iudrix's expression remained unconvinced. His options here were limited here; he could excuse himself and flee, leaving the sapling to his own devices (which was hardly an option at all); or he could think of something else, anything else. Panicked, he blurted out, "You could come with me?" and then immediately winced. Too late - he'd said it.(edited)
Brom
Iudrix' eyes widened in surprise. "I can? Thatwouldbegreat!" His smile got a little bigger and he moved to set the sword on the ground, ready to jump right up and go immediately. "I can practice stuff along the way. It'll be just the same as if I stayed to train here." His face was all smiles now, even those silly wings of his seemed to have perked up with the idea of ACTUALLY GOING SOMEWHERE.
raumlet
"I - I can't train you," Ren said hurriedly, lifting his hands to settle the sapling down. If he'd been as excitable as this, he was sorry for everyone he'd ever interacted with; but then, he had been arrested and thrown in a cell in Rata Sum before he was a month old. Who was he to judge? "I don't - I could teach you to shoot? But that's all. I, uh, I don't like to be so... close. I'd rather avoid fighting at all. And I have a - a friend, someone I work with. I-I don't know that she'll be - that is - you may not, uh, be able to... to stay. Very long."(edited)
Brom
He sat back again with a thump. "I wasn't, uh..." the sylvari mused for a second on the correct word. "Propositioning you." He raised a brow, in an exaggerated bemused sort of way. "I don't even really know you! I only know like... a handful of people that's a little early to be picking anything I'm not gonna try to get between you and your..." Iudrix paused again, to think for the word. "Girlfriend. I just want to get out and honestly if I can just get out of the grove I can go alone. Practice doesn't really mean you training me. I'm sure I know it, I just have to try it out."
raumlet
"Propositio-" The painfully dark blush that colored Ren's face sprung up instantly as comprehension dawned, and his glow spiked in surprise. He waved his hands furiously in a panicked negative. "N-no, no - no no no, no, that's not - Lil's - we're, I-I'm not - " Whatever it was he was trying to say, it wasn't coming out; he dropped his face in his hands, as if not being able to see Iudrix meant Iudrix couldn't see him, and hunched into the fluffy leaves sprouting from his shoulders. Without lifting his head, he managed, "Th-that's not it."
Brom
"Then as long as I leave before you meet up with her there's no reason for her to be jealous or whatever." Any other reason for someone not wanting him around was just not comprehended by Iudrix as he smiled again. "Look I just really want to go but if I try to leave on my own someone will just track me down again. I need some sort of an excuse at least at first. And no one else will agree I can leave."
raumlet
"No, tha-that's.... Lil's not -" Taking a deep breath, Ren peeked between his fingers and fixed his eyes on the floor, which was thankfully non-judgmental, as floors tend to be, and gathered his thoughts under a shield of formality. "Lillica and I are - are friends. Strictly friends. Th-the issue is that, uh, our research is... very dangerous? I - she may not want s-strangers in the, um. The - in our lab. I-I'm not sure," he finished miserably, without making any attempt to catch Iudrix's eye again.(edited)
Brom
The sapling sighed. "Then I just won't go in? That's even less of a problem. I'm not there to poke around your lab or anything." He tilted his head, leaning to the side as if he could somehow manage to catch the larger sylvari's downward gaze. "I'm not afraid of.. whatever it is. But I won't touch it if you don't want me to. I don't see what the matter is."
raumlet
"That's - th-that's sort of the issue, not being afraid. The lab's not confined to the lab," Ren muttered into his palm, finally glancing up at Iudrix; he looked away just as quickly, but the eye contact was made. The entire apartment was a wreck right now. Between his own smelting experiments, Lil's prototypes for her batteries, the explosives and sharp instruments lying around - Ren grimaced. Pushing himself to his feet, he carefully hefted the pack over his shoulder again and waved vaguely. "If you - um. You really can't touch anything. Really. Um, but, i-if you can be careful, you can come."
Brom
Leaving the sword on the groun, Drix held up both hands and spread his fingers. "I won't touch anything. Promise." Gesture complete he grabbed the sword and pushed himself up to his feet. The now-slightly-squished bag was still on his shoulders. "If I wasn't supposed to go places, I wouldn't want to so much."
raumlet
"Okay," Ren placed one weary hand on the doorknob to their small, shared apartment and looked back over his shoulder at Iudrix, who was peering out over the railing at the water far below. The trip out here had been... interesting. Educational? He'd learned a lot about herding an over-exciteable child, at least. Keeping him on the right path all the way to Garenhoff - and out of harm's way - had... Well. Even with the waypoints, it had been a long journey, and Ren had spent most of it wishing to be home. Now that he was here, the reality that Iudrix was too settled in, and his nerves were back in full force.
"Okay," he repeated. The door wasn't locked, by the feel of it, which meant Lil was here. "Please... remember not to touch anything? If you don't know what it is, please, don't... don't touch it. Okay?"
Brom
Iudrix had already crossed his arms over his chest before Ren finished his sentence, realizing how nervous the other sylvari was. Sadly locking up those things on his back was much less easy- they weren't real wings, so it wasn't like he could... fold them or anything. "I can stay out here for a bit!" he replied just a little too enthusiastically. "Or- or go if you need me to."
Lillica
Lillica heard their boots knock on the stone entrance floor and immediately pulled her nose from the projects. As a gadgeteer, she had grown to be something of a footwear enthusiast. Slick shoes, fast shoes, rocket boots, thigh high jump generators, you name it. Through months of testing on more than a few designs Lillica acquired a keen ear for the sound of footsteps. Today she heard two, one of them unmistakably belonging to Ren. She knew on account of the secret metal plate she'd installed on each heel, just a little prank. She'd planned to magnetize the floor on Halloween but was so busy with business she lost the chance. All the same, it was a surprise to think someone might accompany Ren to the lab. Perhaps a dear heart? Lillica laughed so loud at her own joke the two likely heard her from outside. After rising from her chair, Lillica stuck her head out the doorway to see just who Ren dragged to work. "Oh Ren~," her voice echoed in the hall, "I know you've got a friend with you. Introduce me please, titles and all. I want to make an intimidating first impression."
raumlet
Lil's voice reached them as he pushed the door open - he wasn't surprised she heard them coming, and there she was, blossomed head sticking out the door down the hall. Shrugging off his coat, he hung it by the door and stepped back to let Iudrix enter.
"I don't think you need your titles to be intimidating," he called back, leading the way towards the lab proper. His stammering disappeared as he spoke to her; it was difficult to be nervous around the woman who'd fished his severed finger out from under the table while he was busy bleeding everywhere. With a wave at Lil, he turned back to Iudrix. "That's Lillica Foster - notable gadgeteer, Institute of Apprenticeship project head, creator of the permanent personal flame shield, um... Honorary skritt?" Grinning, Lil motioned for Ren to continue. "Aaaand champion genius. And this is... Um."
The stammer was back along with Ren's nerves; he glanced back at Iudrix behind him in the hallway, then gave Lil a helpless little shrug of his broad shoulders. "This is, uh, Iudrix. He - he wanted to leave the Grove."
Brom
Iudrix went to wave, quickly remembering himself and sticking his hand back under his arm instead. "I already promised I wouldn't touch anything! Many, many times." The purple and teal sapling gave her a hopefully smile, more for Ren's sake then his own. It was... difficult to not look at everything but he was doing his best as he stood awkwardly in the doorway, not quite stepping through yet. He still wasn't even sure if he was just going to get kicked right back out. "I don't have any titles yet. Or anything."
Lillica
Lillica smiled when Ren tacked on champion genius to the list of achievements. "Come on in! I don't mind hosting guests," she beckoned to them both before adding, "And tell your friend Theres got a thing or two I wouldn't mind having touched." Lillica left to her office on that note, leaving them to chew over exactly what she meant. While Ren attempted to show off the lab, Lillica got buy rummaging through cabinets, desks, and piles of scrap for her latest battery prototype. In the end, the Gadgeteer found it sealed in a glass case by the window, conveniently forgotten at the brightest corner of the room. Lillica flipped the casing off so she could take her creation downstairs, presenting it like a prize in her two outstretched, leafy red hands.
"Sorry for the wait. If you want, I'll let you touch this. I have a few tests to run on it, and the more realistic the circumstances, the better the data. Replacing the dummy with a dummy would be excellent for checking the safety on verdant bio matter."
Brom
Iudrix raised a brow as he gave Ren a questioning look, now even more confused as to why the other was so damn nervous. Unhooking his arms from one another he stepped the rest of the way into the hall, close enough to one wall the leafy tip of one 'wing' smashed unceremoniously into it. The fact it was bent didn't seem to bother him. "I thought your girlfriend was mean-" he managed to half whisper before she came back, battery in hands. "Is this a bomb?" He took it anyways, rolling it around and looking over the sides. There was zero nervousness to it, just pure curiosity. "It's interesting."
raumlet
Ren, who had been carefully unpacking the bombs he'd brought home (which he'd swaddled in shirts Iudrix had graciously allowed him to use for just that purpose), straightened up with a bomb in one hand and a scandalized expression on his fuzzy face. "Lillica! I didn't bring him here for that, he's just a sapling!" Nevermind that Ren himself wasn't even a year old.
Lillica
Lillica threw a blank stare Ren's way until he stopped talking, then faced Iudrix again. "It's a battery. A chaos battery. Tests indicate there is leakage both in and out of use, but they also suggest the leaking energies shouldn't be in the harmful spectrum for humans. You are leafy. I am leafy. Nobody has done extensive studies on the effects of minor chaos energy leaks on our kind, so I'll have to do my own studies here and now. Would you mind being the subject? All I need is for you to stick it in an elixir rifle and vent fumes for thirty minutes while I record the data."
Iudrix didn't seem to mind, but Lillica took it as him just being polite. To reassure him she added, "Don't worry, this is just a prototype. If I ever release it it'll be a much safer model! Oh, and Ren. REN! Grab the old elixir rifle and three pesticide cartridges, please?"
Brom
"Chaos... energy? Uhhh..." Everything she said might as well have been in another language, they were way off the deep end of his gifted knowledge. "What's an elixir rifle and how do you... vent it? Is that like shooting? This is a bullet?" He looked over to Ren helplessly, not to stop it but for more information.
raumlet
"I'm not helping! Don't - don't make me h-help with this, Lil, no one has volunteered for a second round of these tests, and he's - " Ren gestured at Iudrix with the bomb in his hand. "Iudrix, it - it's not that it's a b-bad idea, I - it's brilliant if it'll work - but it's... this is very dangerous. It's a battery, not a bullet. She wants you to release a cloud of chaos energy for half an hour and just... just stand in it! Which is not beneficial for humans and isn't likely to be much better for Sylvari! Lil. Lillica! Please don't ignore me!"(edited)
Lillica
Lillica shook her head at Ren, "Fine I'll just do it myself. But you can bet I'll be taking your name off of the contributions list when I publish my findings."
Having said her piece, the Gagdeteer started for a closet on the other side of the house, leaving the two to talk until she returned. The closet was packed with old attempts at modifying existing designs. The exclusively glue bomb kit, the too-big toolkit (someone had perfect that before she got a chance), and of course, the elixir gun (soon to be) of chaos. Lillica's own crowning achievement, the permanent personal flame shield, had come from this same line of creations an modifications. She returned after a few tweaks to its bolts, and was ready with paperwork to cover her ass before they began testing.
"Just sign every page, bottom left."
Brom
Ren's upset words should have given him more pause. And Iudrix did seem to think about it, watching the fuzzy sylvari when Lillica went to go get her equipment. Ren did seem pretty upset. But then again, he also said Lillica would be angry and that Drix might not even be let in the door. Weighing the choices it seemed to him that there was more reason to just try what was asked- Even if Lillica wasn't the one that got him out of the grove, she was sort of Ren's girlfriend or something so if he owed one he might as well owe the other, right? By the time she got back his decision was made, the sapling happily taking the pen and only briefly scanning the pages before signing each one. "It can't be that bad, I'm not afraid."
raumlet
While Lil went off to find her supplies, Ren knelt to unpack the bombs with jittery hands, shooting Iudrix guilty glances the entire time - he'd brought the young Sylvari here, into this. If anything happened to him, it was on Ren's shoulders. If he didn't help... If he just let it happen...
"F-Fine," he said while Iudrix was signing. Shoving Iudrix's shirts back into the bag in a messy ball, he got to his feet again. "Fine, I'll help."
Lillica
Lillica perked up to a new level of bubbly, tech-induced joy when Ren agreed to help. The efficiency would be astounding with a partner on board. "Alright, that's fantastic! Ren, you know all of the standard procedures with testing. Today we'll be breaking rules seven, nine, and twenty three with our tests, but it's covered by the exceptions stated in rule eighty nine of the Consortium guide to standard innovative practices. Be sure to take note of that in the write up and any additional documentation. I'll go ask the townsfolk for permission to use the terrace, so get the typewriter out and then start instructing your friend on how to use the Elixer Gun. I'll take over when I get back. Come on now, let's get going!"
Having said her piece, Lillica immediately slipped out the door to flag down the civilians nearby, and then promptly shoo them away.
Brom
Realizing he still had on his backpack, Iudrix shrugged it off. For a moment he just stood there, bag strap in one hand, battery in the other. There didn't really seem anywhere too appropriate to put the thing. "I can just- I'll put this here." He dropped it on the floor, smooshing it as close to the hallway wall as he could with one leafy boot. The sapling took a deep breath. It was true he wasn't scared, but this was definitely seeming a bigger step than leaving the grove. "I'm not shooting that thing, right? I just turn it on?"
raumlet
"Right, you'll only be venting it for a bit," Ren said miserably; he'd taken the elixir gun when Lil had shoved it at him, and he beckoned Iudrix over to show him how to handle it. "This lever here - see? Just pull it back and hold it. Ordinarily it would vent heat and a little steam, perfectly harmless, but ordinarily these things aren't rigged up to chaos batteries. Which is why we'll be on the terrace. Here."
Handing the gun off to Iudrix, Ren motioned down the hall after Lil. "Follow her. I'll be out in a moment."(edited)
Lillica
Lillica had cleared the space outside. One or two citizens refused to budge, but when she said as seriously as possible that the tests would continue anyway, they hightailed it out of there. She was ready for Iudrix when they met her.
"Alright," she started, "I'm guessing Ren explained everything to you? Good. I drew a little circle on the ground with chalk over there, you just stand in it and don't do a thing until I tell you. Ren should be getting some specialized glass to for a protective wall on the doorway, just in case. Meanwhile, I'll go snag some finer instruments of measurement." Lillica tapped her gold and brass shoulder plate, "I installed a few chaos readers in this thing when I started this project, but they're not as precise as I'd like. The real heavy duty ones may look a bit scary, but I promise they don't pose any threat to you."
Lillica left Iudrix for a moment, returning with a massive metal box hanging from each hand. They handles of each connected to thick frames that formed the body of the devices, and their inner workings were on display through a small glass window. After Lillica set them up, pointed them at Iudrix, and plugged them in, the window lit up in purple and green holotech displays. They poured an eerie glow on the stone walls and floors, even casting a certain aura of evil genius onto Lillica herself. Not even the bright sun of mid afternoon could melt away such feelings of dread, not when the measuring boxes started their shrill hums of calibration before the tests.
"This should do it," Lillica grinned, "Now once Ren gets the glass in place we'll begin. All you have to do is turn it on when I say, off when I say, and stay in the circle."
Brom
After a second thought Iudrix left his swords with the bag as well, stacking them one on the other on top of his bag. The top one of course almost immediately slid off to smack onto the floor (and probably scratch it) but he had other things to worry about now. "Is it going to burn?" he asked, tilting his head a little as Ren showed him which level to pull. "Should I hold it away? Or close? Or... I guess the point is to hold it close." He took the gun when it was offered, following Lil out the door. Funny enough it was the circle that gave him the most pause so far, even though the sylvari walked over TO it, he didn't quite step inside. He turned to the window and it's eerie glow, the bright displays unlike anything he had any awareness of. "What do I do if-" Iudrix shook his head. "Nevermind." He stepped in the circle, elixer gun awkwardly clutched across his skinny chest.

Ren came hobbling sideways down the hallway a few minutes later with a thick, heavy sheet of glass and a typewriter clutched precariously in his armpit, his lips pressed into a thin line - mostly from the strain now. Mostly. "Lil," he said, then "Thank you," as the other engineer stretched over the glass to take the typewriter from under his arm. Rather than set up the barrier, though, he stood there for a moment with the glass in his hands and looked out at Iudrix.
"Iudrix, you -" Glancing at Lil, Ren almost stopped; he drummed his fingers on the glass for a moment before continuing. "You can stop and leave the experiment at any time with no penalty. That's... that's part of the contract. Which I know you didn't read. But that's - you can do that. This isn't likely to be lethal, but it'll be... it's going to be uncomfortable."
His piece said, Ren moved to seal the doorway with the glass. It was scratched and pitted in a few places, enough that he wouldn't trust it as a blast shield anymroe, but it would serve well enough for this. Once the barrier was in place, he sat on the floor and let Lil hand the typewriter down to him; he hunched over it, fed a sheet of paper in, and settled in to record.
Lillica
Unfortunately, Ren was correct. Iudrix had every right to step out of the experiment, and since it hadn't even begun yet, she couldn't leverage fines on him either. Before anything more could happen, she needed to know. "Iudrix, are you in or out?"
Brom
It wasn't as if he had enough coins to even pay any sort of fine if she could. "I'm sure it will be fine. Yeah, I'll do it." Iudrix managed a smile, a much more confident (and stubborn) one now they were so close to actually doing something. He fumbled with the gun, trying to find a comfortable way to hold it while still being able to flip the lever. It wasn't a very good job, guns felt weird in his hands.
Lillica
Lillica smiled back at Iudrix, "Thank you. Both me and the consortium at large appreciate your participation. Now then, flip the switch."
Iudrix found said switch on the left side of the Elixer gun. It was a little black plastic lever that seemed almost rusted in place, so that when the time came to flick it up the damn thing took a little muscle to move. Once on, the battery began humming as its internal chao-catalytic reactions started up. Iudrix could feel a slight burning in their hand wherever it touched the gun metal, and soon the feeling spread from hand, to arm, up the neck, and settled in the eyes. As soon as it did, Iudrix was able to see wisps of purple smoke issuing from the cracks between the battery and the slot in which it was stored. Every three seconds these magic wisps of energy seemed to solidify and turn into fragmented cubes, then back to their original form like a glitch in a screen. The others didn't seem to notice, though their instruments had begun ticking and whirring, recording all the data of what transpired in, on, or around Project Zezzifer Battery Test Subject 1, Iudrix.
Brom
He yelled in surprise as the sensation traced up his face , almost dropping the gun. Letting go with one hand to rub at his eyes the tip of it smacked into the drawn circle on the ground as it was. There really wasn't much noticing the cubes, when his eyes weren't shut Iudrix was too preoccupied with the burning. "I'm not going to go blind right?!"
raumlet
"We don't know, Iudrix," Ren called back, with a reproachful glance up at Lil above him - not that she saw. "Humans have, but no Sylvari. So far. ...That I know of." Another glance up at Lil, more concerned this time; he hadn't actually been there for the other tests she'd run. Oh, he'd read her write-ups and spent plenty of time discussing the idea with her, but having been privy to (and a beneficiary of) one of her grant requests, he understood that reports could be... flexible. "...Right? Lil? Please tell me I'm right."
Lillica
Lillica nodded, "True, but this is mostly because any previous studies on the effects of chaos leakage from equipment on sylvari or other verdant life forms did not have enough empirical backing to be considered valid. Ah, and the humans were exposed to slightly higher amounts of chaos energy before blindness occurred. Our instruments are indicating you still have a comfortable blanket between current levels and the threshold for onset blindness."
Lillica noticed a spike in one of the graphs, then nudged Ren to record it. "Could you describe how you feel? Any thing you might see, hear, smell, or perhaps taste? Qualitative data can be just as useful as quantitative."
Brom
Iudrix forced his eyes open, though he kept his hand near his face, curled into a fist. "I-uh-I -" there was actual fear and distress in his voice now, it shook as he tried to describe it. "It hurts. M-mostly in my eyes but my arms too, sort of. I can see..." he paused to scrub at his face again, shaking his head and trying to make out the shapes. "Crates? Cubes. Cubes. B-but only for a moment." He winced.
raumlet
Ren had paused for a moment to put his head in his hand, but at Lil's nudge he dropped his hands back to the typewriter and continued tapping away. His eyes flitted between the monitors and Iudrix out on the terrace - other than a faint warp in the air around the sapling, there was little indication of what was happening, but Iudrix's drooping posture was enough for Ren. They were barely two minutes in; how was he going to handle the full thirty minutes?
Lillica
Lillica nodded her head rapidly, "Cubes? Visible cubes? Ren, do you see them?" After Ren's slow shake of the head, she continued, "Me neither. I have an idea though. I've been getting my chaos crystals for this experiment from a cave in chart territory, searched it out myself to get the mining operation going. We're fairly certain the crystals used in the thaumanova reactor are from the same source. The reactor was reported to show similar reactions in their crystals to the reactions of the source crystals, and at the same time according to our dating tests. I've attributed it to a tendency towards natural resonance in that particular source crystal. Perhaps this same resonance is bonding you into the loop? I can't think of any other explanation for why you're seeing cubes and we're not."
Lillica whispered to Ren, "At least not off the top of my head."
Brom
"I don't- I don't have any idea what that means. Is it bad? They're only there a second. Like the pink butterflies." His voice got a little stronger now that the initial surprise was over, but the sapling still sounded pretty scared. Iudrix was practically yelling at them when he answered back, much too loud- as if the glass was a brick wall they had to hear him through. After a moment of rubbing hard at his face again he fumbled for the gun, lifting it back into that still awkward but better position across his chest.
raumlet
"That's... that's a bit concerning," Ren said, low enough that only Lilica could hear. His brow creased as he looked up at Iudrix. In other fields, he could keep up just fine with Lil; in some, he even surpassed her. Chaos energy was not one of those fields, and he could only wish he knew more s he watched the sapling. "Thirty minutes shouldn't be long enough for any permanent effects of that level. Er... Probably? Right?"
Lillica
Lillica shrugged at Ren, "I’d like to say yes, and based On human standard data he should be fine, but you cannot forget the purpose of this test. To gather information on how these chaos equipment leaks might impact verdant bio matter, such as us sylvari. Nobody has done enough testing with empirical backing to give an idea on what we'll expect, right now we'll be informing the entire field with our findings. Do you understand?" Lillica waited for a Ren to nod, then turned back together face the subject at hand. "It sounds fairly normal to me, the butterflies are unexpected but probably just a product of your Mesmer affinities influencing the typical cubical shaping. Let me know if the shapes, whatever they are, start forming something more solid, or for longer durations. It shouldn't, but if it does we can stop the tests. When things become more tangible like that, chaos energy starts getting unpredictable."
Brom
"Okay. I can do this. I'm okay," Iudrix yelled back, trying to sound completely normal. It... didn't work as well as he thought it did, it still HURT. The leafy faux-wings that jutted from his back seemed to start wilting. Nothing sudden or dramatic, They just seemed to... sag. He was already starting to wear down whether he wanted to admit to them or not. Weak and not very good at hiding it. "N-nothing's changed."
raumlet
"I know that, Lil, that's why I was concerned when you dragged him into this," Ren muttered, more to himself than anything. "I - I just don't want him to leave this permanently scarred."
Lillica
Lillica adjusted some dials and intensity levers on her instruments. "There we go," she was ignoring Ren now, "This should make things a little more accurate. Iudrix, you're doing fine. My projections indicate we have another five minutes before you approach the human threshold. If you really don't want to risk any potentially permanent side effects, you should drop out soon. Otherwise please keep the observations coming they are very important to monitoring your status."
While Lillica was speaking, more butterflies continued to erupt into Iudrix's vision. They fluttered through the air, exploding into smaller butterflies whenever they collided with one another, bursting into smaller butterflies and those into ever smaller ones. Sometimes they would run into the curiously manifesting cubes, to the same effect. Only one of the butterflies, much brighter than the others, looked to attempt dodging its mystic brethren. It jutted forward between cracks in the swarm, paused once or twice, and drifted around clusters of the smaller bursting jumbles. Eventually it landed, right atop the Elixer rifle, which at once tuned bright pink!
Despite this curious reaction, very little of what Iudrix could observe was visible to Ren or Lil. They were able to read the storm of chaos on their graphs or by peering at the various measuring instruments, but no display of mad colors ever entered their vision. To them, Iudrix simply stood in a circle, held a gun, and shook terribly.
Brom
"I-it's not hurting any worse. Still the same. Um- it's -it's getting hard to see." He tried to focus on the tiny bright things one at a time but it all was so bright and fast and it felt like the moment they were there they were gone. "There's so many." Somehow he managed not to drop the now-pink gun, in fact pulling it a little tighter against himself. "The gun turned pink. I'm - it's not hurting more. I'm okay." He wasn't looking at them through the glass now, just the butterflies.
Lillica
Lillica nodded at him, not entirely sure of the things he described. The gun certainly didn't /look/ pink, but you can never be sure.
"Two minutes before human threshold exposure, Iudrix. Decide now whether or not you'll continue the test."
At this point, Lillica's words started to sound warped. Like every last syllable was held back in a little vacuum, or tugged on so that it had to catch up to the rest of the word later. At times the last syllable of one word ran into the first second and third of the next. The cubes, ever present, had started to stay longer and longer before reverting back to the original misty forms. Two of them had stuck entirely, now suspended in the air, bursting all butterflies which hit them, but not budging and inch themselves. The essences of chaotic energy had started to crystallize and solidify. Things were becoming more ridiculous, but also more tangible. Just as Lillica finished her final warning to Iudrix, her red leaves and anything else sharing the color shifted to a brilliant purple hue. From this point on, Iudrix would risk permanent side effects.
Brom
There wasn't an answer. It wasn't obvious if he actually comprehended what she said, the sapling focused completely on the frozen cubes through watering eyes. Shifting his grip on the gun that was no longer the same gun he let go with one hand and slowly reached out to touch them. "I think- I think I can hold these ones," he finally yelled to the two behind the glass, still not answering the question. Iudrix was glowing now, the indigo that pulsed in his face and limbs much too bright and much too fast. The burning seemed numb and far away- his senses overwhelmed by the colors and shapes. After a moment he repeated himself, even his own words warped and lost.
Lillica
When Iudrix made contact with the floating cube, the Elixer rifle at once fractured, warped, and broke into dozens of cubes loosely held together as a similar shape. It was as if the gun were pixelated, but in three dimensions. Every cube was on solid color, vibrating at different speeds than the ones around it, but over time they shook faster and faster, turning lighter or darker as they did until all cubes making up the gun were a uniform translucent pink. It seemed like the blink of an eye to Iudrix, but to the others another five minutes had already passed. By then, the vibrating cubes were nearly untouchable, the energy with which they moved had become so great that one by one the cubes floated off from the original structure as steam does from water. The cubes passed through butterflies swarms and came to rest atop the one Iudrix had first stretched his hand to touch. One after another, they built on it, creating the shape of a T, or rather a hilt to a growing pink and purple blade. Ren and Lillica were finally able to witness a fraction of the world Iudrix was caught in, visible only by how the Elixer gun was being literally deconstructed, or rather evaporating before their very eyes.
Brom
The act of describing what he was seeing was a lost whisper from what seemed like forever away. There were only butterflies and lights and the pulses of energy that consumed him. Somehow through the chaotic storm Iudrix managed to wrap his thin fingers around the hilt, sinking slowly to his knees in the process. Or was it through the floor? He couldn't tell. It didn't matter. There was nothing, and everything.
Lillica
The blade grew longer, longer, yet longer as the Elixer gun dissipated. Soon, the entire barrel had gone. Then the frame. Part of the stock, next. But before the gun had completely disappeared, before the blade was fully formed, the chaos battery began cubing itself. It exploded into a ten by ten burst of pink and purple much more forcefully than anything else-- and then in a flash of blinding white light it ended. The butterflies, the cubes, the gun, all gone. For just a few seconds longer, the sword was visible before fading out as well. It's tip, unfortunately, was incomplete. Lillica pushed aside the glass screen for Ren to rush over. Her lips were a tight frown, and her brow creased. "We were just five minutes short. Just five minutes from a complete set of data. I am.... Never mind. We'll discuss it later, you don't seem entirely here."
Lillica took a few final checks on her screen. There was lingering chaotic energy, nothing serious except a concentration approaching threshold on Iudrix's hand, and a little bit behind his eyes. She decided to examine it more thoroughly later. Lillica began packing up, taking the instruments back inside.
Iudrix was left alone with Ren. There was still tingling throughout his body, and whenever he looked at something that he knew to be red, it was purple instead. Butterfly violet, as a Mesmer might describe. The only other curious change was that whenever he moved, Iudrix saw the shadow of a sword extending from his hand, like an echo of something that was once there, scene from the corner of an eye, or a ghost. Whenever his hand came to rest, the sword was gone. Just as before, nobody else noticed. It was a reality for Iudrix alone to experience.
raumlet
Ren had squeezed himself out from behind the glass almost before Lil had the chance to push it out of the way, his feet thudding heavily on the planks of the terrace. "Iudrix! Iudrix, are you -" He cut himself off as he dropped to his knees next to the wilted, kneeling sapling - of course he wasn't alright! And it was Ren's fault; he'd known about Lillica's research, and he'd more or less hand-delivered Iudrix to her. Gently, hesitantly, he touched Iudrix's shoulder with a shaking hand. "How are you feeling?"
Brom
Iudrix didn't answer at first. Instead he promptly leaned forward... and started violently throwing up. After it passed he raised a shaking arm to his mouth, wiping it off with the back of his hand. There was another silence, a long moment where everything was still. And then, he answered. "It doesn't hurt anymore." The sapling raised his eyes to Ren and gave him a wobbly smile. The glowing had stopped with the explosion, and despite the now rather heavy wilting of his faux wings he was in one piece. More or less.
raumlet
While Iudrix retched, Ren waited and rubbed his back, the only thing he could think to do - his answering smile was pathetic, a half-hearted wibble of his lips that didn't reach his eyes. "Okay. That's... Um. That's good! Definitely good. Lillica is going to want to talk to you again later, but you... you should rest now. I'll carry you in, okay?" He said, and although his intonation implied a question, he slid his arm under Iudrix's knees and lifted the gangly sapling without waiting for an answer; the arm cradling his back was wedged neatly between the drooping wings, sparing them further damage. Staggering only slightly under the weight, Ren sped back to the door with Iudrix's long legs bumping against him. "Sorry," he said as he stepped over the typewriter he'd knocked over in his haste to get out the door. "About... all of this." Immediately inside on the left was a small, cluttered living area; toeing a pile of papers off the couch, Ren deposited Iudrix on the cushions as gently as he could and then knelt to scoop the papers back into a pile. From his position on the floor, Ren looked up at Iudrix, utterly contrite.
Brom
"I can walk-" Iudrix managed to partially get out before Ren just picked him up anyways, the thin sylvari still too dazed to put up any sort of a fight about it. He didn't complain when dumped on the couch, shifting to get more comfortable and finally rolling over enough to hide his eyes against one of the cushions. His voice was muffled by it when he talked, face pressed into the relatively soft fabric, eyes closed. "So I shouldn't leave immediately? I said I didn't have to stay."
raumlet
"I... you - should stay. I wasn't comfortable with you leaving immediately as it was," he muttered down at the papers on the floor in front of him. Some Consortium nonsense - he thumbed through them idly, something to do with his hands rather than pull his foliage out. Guiltily, he glanced at the door. No sign of Lillica yet. "You don't have to assist with her research. That isn't why I brought you here," he said softly, almost too quiet to be heard, then pushed himself to his feet. "Would you like anything? Water? A blanket, a pillow? Are you - well, you may not want to eat..."
Brom
He'd heard. "I'd still be in the grove. I owe you." His face was still jammed in that pillow but he spoke louder than Ren did. "It doesn't hurt... anymore. Just feels like-" Iudrix tried to think of the word, shivering a little. He gave up. "It doesn't hurt anymore." As for the question of whether he needed anything, the sapling just neglected to answer that at all, instead asking a question of his own. "How many were there? How far did they go?" He was, of course, referring to the butterflies, not aware of the fact no one could see any of that but himself. They were so strong, so bright.
raumlet
"That doesn't mean you need to put yourself through these tests," Ren replied. He dragged a knitted blanket out of the hammock hanging on the far wall, folded it into a neat rectangle, and draped it over Iudrix's head to block the light filtering in through the window. The couch dipped as he seated himself at Drix's feet, his chin dropping into his hand. "How many of what?"
Brom
"You didn't see? Any of it?" Iudrix' tone was a little incredulous, he even shifted a little to peek out from under the blanket, the knit sticking comically to the thorny vines that draped down his face. "Like-" the worn sapling lifted his hand, waving it to flash some of said butterflies like he'd done more than a few times before. They appeared, yes, but it hurt, like fingernails scraping across a sunburn. He hissed in reaction, holding back a yelp and burrowing his face back into the pillow again.
raumlet
"Very little of it. The gun changing color, and the gun disappearing," Ren said, shrugging his broad shoulders. "Phenomena within a chaos energy radiation field is limited almost entirely to the field. Which is partly what makes study of it so difficult... The test subject has to be able to give accurate descriptions while inside the field. That's, ah. Difficult. As you know now. Rest - just rest. She can quiz you on what you saw later." He gave Iudrix's calf an awkward pat. There was no telling how extensive or permanent the damage Iudrix had taken was, but there was no point in the sapling pushing himself.
Brom
"I still don't know what any of those words mean. If you couldn't see it I don't know if I have the right words to describe." He sighed, wings drooping a little more. "I don't know any of these things, I didn't dream about any of it. Maybe I'm not gonna be as much use as she's expecting."
raumlet
"I didn't dream about machines," Ren said. He leaned back against the cushions and folded his arms over his chest. "Not... not really, at least. Metal and wires, things I didn't understand at the time and still don't if I try to remember what I saw. But mostly it was..." Brow creased, he paused, trying to find the words to express himself. "...People? Not faces, voices and gestures. And places. I visited to Rata Sum as soon as they'd let me leave the Grove because of my Dream. I don't know what relevance it all had, though. My Dream certainly hasn't served to guide me." Another shrug. "Dreams can only fit so much."
Brom
"I had a song. A real specific one but I have no idea what it is." Between his embarrassed mumbling and the pillow shoved in his face Iudrix was pretty hard to make out. "If it's a hunt it's the worst one." He'd listened quietly, not interrupting until Ren was done. "How long until they let you leave?"
raumlet
"Ah... two weeks? I was very, very young, and I came right back. Things were... They were different." Ren sighed and dropped his head back against the couch, his eyes fixed on a cobweb in the corner of the room. "We weren't dragon minions then, as far as we knew. And I could shoot - I awoke with the ability to, well enough to defend myself. Not that I would have needed to on a day trip to a well-traveled city. Your timing was unfortunate, Iudrix, that's all."
Brom
"Oh." He pondered for a while. "Two weeks is still a long time." For him, it was. "I don't know if I still would have wanted to wait. I would have but-" the pitch of his tone rose along with the speed of his words. Finally he paused and evened out again. "Everyone got so upset when I wanted to leave. I didn't like it. Being stuck."
raumlet
Ren looked down at the lump of blankets and limbs that was Iudrix - all he could really see was the vines still caught on the edge of the blanket, and he reached out to pull the blanket back down over Iudrix's jaw. "They were concerned, and for good reason," he said. He was rather wishing he'd left Iudrix there or even gone so far as to warn the guards - Ren certainly hadn't done him any favors by bringing him along. "How old are you?"
Brom
"It doesn't really matter does it? I mean. I'm done just fine." Iudrix huffed an indignant sigh from under the blanket. Slowly and after a long moment he relented. "About half that. The. Uh. Two weeks." The words were practically whispered into the pillow, he clearly didn't want to admit just how many days he'd been around.
raumlet
Iudrix couldn't see it, but Ren's eyes went wide and round; he'd leaned in to better hear Iudrix's muffled words, but he leaned back, startled, and stared down at him. "A week? Thorns, Iudrix," he said softly, horror evident in his voice. "Why did you let us do this to you?"
Brom
"I didn't know it would feel like that. I was asked. BESIDES, it doesn't hurt any more." He repeated the declaration yet again, turning his head so Ren would be SURE to hear it. "I don't regret it. I'm not stuck in the grove any more." Iudrix lifted the blanket off his face, sitting all the way up with a groan. It slid part way off, catching against a wing and pulling it down further- just adding to his current dishevelled appearance. "It- it wasn't THAT bad."
raumlet
"We don't know what the long-term effects are, even of those thirty minutes," Ren said. His voice wavered; he pushed his hands through his spikey hair and let them rest there, eyes still wide as he stared at Iudrix. "And whatever they are, Iudrix, they're permanent! We can't undo whatever we've done to you. And you're a week old!"
Lillica
Lillica reentered the room while wiping her hands in an oily white towel. "Twenty five minutes, rounded up. I double checked out instruments and corrected for natural mini time distortions that occur around chaos magic."
Lillica sat down right next to Iudrix, handing him a clipboard, pen, and paper, "I forgot to include this with the other stuff. Please give a complete written account of what happened during the test, be thorough, spare no details. I'll need everything I can get, because our Elixer rifle seems to have disappeared and the battery along with it. No battery means no study of the battery, post trial." The gadgeteer sighed, "It also means no more battery tests. We're back to project Zezzifer's initial purpose, unfortunately. It'll take some time to find more chronomancers and a willing subject, so in the meantime stop by here anytime. I'll occupy myself by documenting how your condition changes over time. If the measurements hinted anything, it's that you've got /something/ from the test still stuck in your body, and probably a little more than latent chaotic radiation."
Brom
Lillica saved him from having to declare yet again he was fine. "Uh...." Iudrix took the clipboard and pen, hugging it to his chest with one arm for a moment while he tried to gather his thoughts. "It's not gone, It's-" He held out his hand to her, palm up. "It's the sword. Sort of. That's not really there any more either, is it?" He frowned, tilting the clipboard out to look at the empty page. "I don't really know how to say it. Any of it." The thin sylvari drew a test line down the margin of the page. "Do you have one of these in pink?"
raumlet
Ren seemed to sag as Lil spoke about more tests; his elbows dropped until were more or less cradling his head, his lips pressed into a thin line. "I need to go check on something," he said, more to himself than anything, and pushed himself up off the couch suddenly, tipping Iudrix into Lil as the cushions sprung back into shape. His exit was remarkably swift for such a big guy in such a crowded room, and a moment later, he was thudding his way up the stairs to the work area on the next floor.
Lillica
Lillica frowned as Ren walked out of the room. "He seems grumpy, and to be honest so am I. We really lost a lot more than we might've gained today. That's not your problem though, just the errors of testing. Now what this about a sword?"
She leaned forward to examine Iudrix's exposed Palm. "Your hand looks normal. Is it the right, left, or both that seem to be troubling you? And more importantly, what kind of trouble is it? I need more than some vague mention of swords to go on, Iudrix."
Brom
"I didn't mean to break the gun. I didn't know touching the squares would do that. They- well, there were a couple SOLID ones, I thought I could hold them. But the gun fell part instead. It started to... build itself? Into a sword. I think." There was a thick air of despondence as he spoke, not having realized losing the gun was so bad. "I- went to take it and that was it. Sort of. I can kinda... feel? Where it was." Iudrix furrowed his brow. "It's not there, though. Just that one. I didn't mean to."
Lillica
Lillica sighed, pointing at the blank lines of the paper, a not so subtle suggestion to write as he talked. "I did see a concentration of lingering, or perhaps infused chaotic signatures in your hand. We'll need to request access to or funding for new equipment if I'm to understand exactly what's going on with you better, so don't be afraid to embellish on the reports Ren gave you earlier."
Brom
Iudrix propped the clipboard against his knee and awkwardly started scrawling words in unpracticed text, his handwriting wobbly and halted. "Embelish?" He paused to look at her. "Should I put down about your, um... your leaves turning pink? Or do you have another sheet you're writing?" He was still definitely distraught about fucking up the experiment, but a little curiosity was slipping back in. "You didn't say anything about what it did to YOU."
Lillica
Pink? That couldn't be right. Lillica held out her hand, examining the front and back. Her eyes traveled down her wrist, forearm, and up to her shoulder. Lillica then pulled the collar of her shirt forward and took a peek inside. All red. "That explains it then. I also saw some chaos energy signatures in your head, specifically behind your eyes. I'm afraid that there really is some damage after all, because Iudrix... I'm not pink. It'll be interesting to see if the sword is just another side effect of your altered vision, or if there's something more going on."
She finally stood up, taking any of the completed forms to double check, "It might be in your best interest to stay close by while we monitor your condition, at least until new equipment arrives. And you know, I'm not saying this just because you volunteered for potentially life threatening testing, but you really put yourself out there. Let me know if you'd like to get involved with more stuff like this. As Ren said earlier, I'm the project head of The Consortium's Institute of Apprenticeship, and I'd love to have you."
Lillica leaned in to whisper, "Oh, and don't worry. Even though there was no official agreement, I'll be sure you are compensated for your service today."
Brom
That was a bit harder to comprehend. His eyes didn't hurt anymore, shouldn't they be...? Letting the pen roll down into his lap Iudrix rubbed at his eyes with the back of his hand, motions far harsher than necessary. Luckily he stopped himself when Lillica started to make her offer. "I- I- I- this is a bit much. Maybe I should go back to the grove. I think that's why Ren's upset. ...Are you sure you're not pink?" He rubbed viciously at his eyes again, a little bit of that indigo glow pulsing in his face.
Lillica
Lillica nodded her head, "Positive. I'm afraid it's true, your eyes are a little off. We'll see if it fades with time or not."
Lillica tapped the papers again, reminding him of the task at hand. "And I really do hope you'll stay. There's payment, you know? And training. Depending on the work you do, living quarters may also be included free of charge. Ren is part of the same program, and as you can see he's perfectly normal spare an occasional episode of grumping at me."
Brom
He looked down at the paper then up at her, eyes a little too wide. "I-I- don't even know what I'm doing. MaybeIshouldgo." With a sudden motion the sapling stood up straight, setting the clipboard down between where he was and Lillica. "Th-the wardens are probably looking for me. Again. I-" Iudrix turned towards the hallway he'd left his swords and bag in. "I should probably-" He went to take a step and stumbled instead. There was a flash of colors and noise, and the sylvari found himself suddenly no longer in front of the couch but across the room, fighting vertigo and trying not to puke again. It was... quite unintended.
raumlet
"What was that?" Ren's voice was small with the distance, but his footsteps were heavy on the stairs as he thudded his way back down to the first floor. As he came around the corner into the living room, he nearly walked right into the dazed sapling - his hand, currently in a thick leather glove, rose to catch Iudrix's arm automatically, both steadying him and stopping his own momentum. A frown creased his forehead. "Ah - sorry. Are you... are you alright, Iudrix?"
Lillica
Lillica giggles, "Of course he isn't okay. The poor things trying to walk after nearly a half hour of exposure to chaotic leakage. It looks to me that Iudrix is at about the fifteen minutes past human benchmark equivalent symptoms. That should mean a day or two of rest before typical limb function returns. Waypoints can get you elsewhere just fine but I really recommend staying close."
Brom
"I- I didn't mean to- No." His arm was shaking in Ren's grip, but at least Iudrix didn't throw up all over him. "I- I was gonna go back. They're looking for me. Probably." That had hurt, like a slap across the face- but the disorientation was worse. The sapling slumped a little further. The shock had at least knocked him out of that downward spiral of panic, but he was definitely still dismayed. "It's a little much..." his voice trailed off.
raumlet
Had it come just a few hours earlier, Ren would have been overjoyed to hear Iudrix's intention to return to the Grove - but with the drooping sapling shaking in front of him, the last thing he wanted was to see him stress himself out further by pushing himself. He wasn't even certain if the Menders would be able to help him. Not that Lil would help him much, either, but at least she'd be able to tell him what was happening.
"You... you might want to lie back down. At least for now. I can carry you if you can't walk," Ren said gently; he glanced up at Lil and motioned for her up off the couch, his other hand now supporting Iudrix's elbow. "The survey can wait. Or you can dictate, I'll write it for you."
Lillica
"So long as it gets done," Lillica said, then left the two alone. She had things to do, and by now her role in the test was finished until the forms were filled and new equipment arrived. Lillica said goodbye to them both, retiring upstairs for rest before the next round of meetings later in the evening. Whether or not Iudrix stated was out of her hands.
Brom
He let Ren guide him back to the couch, laying down as well as he could with those long legs of his. Half-curled, Iudrix turned so he faced the back of it, limp faux-wings sticking out over the edge. "I'll fill it out later," he mumbled, mashing the rejected blanket up against his closed eyes. "I-I'm sure I'll be seeing right then. I just need to sleep. Or eat something. I'm sure that's what this is." He shivered. So far there'd been an easy answer to anything that felt off.
raumlet
"Maybe," Ren said, doing his absolute best to keep the skepticism out of his tone. He'd tried to warn Iudrix - he could only wish he'd been more persuasive. "If you need something, or if something... changes, um. Call? One of us will come. Probably me... Okay? Or - do you want me to stay?"
Brom
"I'm fine." Unlike the other times, this declaration sounded a lot more unsure. "I just won't move. Or look. I'm fine." Iudrix sighed, curling a little tighter. He mostly kept to his word, if anyone came down to check they'd still find the sapling in the same room- but curiously enough at some point he moved from the couch to the floor, using the blanket as a pillow. It was honestly more comfortable, he could stretch out and nothing got folded or crunched. He'd also done a little of the paperwork, not much but some of the pages had more words on them. At least one of the pages had been crushed, the awkward attempt at describing crumpled into a ball out of frustration and tossed aside.
Mr. Gutsy, Unn Ferrousdottir, Esrenniel, Geneviette
Gutsy and Unn get to watch Gene and Ren be very sad salads together.
Warnings: Tiny sexist remark regarding Ren.
Unn Ferrousdottir: "Barkeep! What's the specialty?"
Mr. Gutsy: "Ah, my love! The specialty is drinks! What'll ya have? It's on me, and by me, I mean on the boss." He laughs.
Unn rolls her eyes at Gutsy's antics. "Whatever you recommend, dearest."
Gutsy ponders. "For you? The hard cider! Let's see..." He pokes around for the hardest cider he can find.
Unn: "Hard cider it is then, make sure it's icy cold - Hoelbrak cold."
Gutsy places a bottle of ..."cold" hard cider on the bar. "That's as cold as we've got it!"
Unn grabs the bottle in front of her, takes a sip and nearly spits it out. "Uh... What part of Hoelbrak have you been to?!"
Gutsy: "The forges." He laughs. "I don't got anythin' to keep em cold at the moment. Once the boss gets back, he can handle it." He grins.
Unn pinches the bridge of her nose. "Well, why didn't you say so earlier?"
Gutsy shrugs.
Esrenniel steps into the bar, a bag over his shoulder and bags under his eyes. He looks tired, and a bit disheartened as he approaches the bar.
Gutsy: "Oi, salad! Get ya something?"
Unn: "Be forewarned, nothing is cold."
Gutsy: "I mean, it's colder than lava. It's colder than say, the sun."
Ren: "Ah, a few bottles of ale? Whatever is on hand is fine... We can chill it ourselves." He shrugs.
Gutsy: "Oh? Good to know!" He grabs a couple bottles of ale off the counter and places the drinks on the bar. "That'll be 21 copper coins whenever you're ready."
Ren digs out his coin purse and counts out the coins, dropping them on the counter and pushing them towards the Norn. "Thank you." Taking the bottles, he drops all but one into his bag.
Gutsy swipes the coins and tosses them into the till box. "If you get hungry for snacks or somethin', just gimme a holler!"
Ren wrenches the cork out of the one left and takes a swig. Tipping it to the Norn, he turns to leave.
Gene frowned, excusing herself from the group. That voice... she turned, and it was just as she feared. Ren. She quickly turned back, unsure what to do now.
Gutsy: "Hey sweetness, you know what you get when a bouncer bounces a Sylvari?"
Unn: "No...?"
Gutsy: "A tossed salad!" He laughs.
Ren spies a familiar figure across the room and hunches his shoulders as if he can hide behind the tiny bottle in his hand. Ah, the one person he'd rather not see right now, when he's already so... so disappointed in himself. Gene glances at him and looks away, and he winces.
Unn shakes her head at Gutsy and his lack of tact.
Gene groans at the Sylvari joke, but in spite of herself she feels the corner of her lip twitch up in a smile.
Gutsy: "Oooo, looks like the room is gettin' a bit heavy. You know what fixes that? More beer!" He cheers and sneaks a swig of something expensive.
Unn turns around and looks around the bar, taking in who is sitting or standing and where.
Gene sighs, and heads toward the bar, giving Ren only a small glance on her way. Surely he did not want to speak with her.
Gutsy: "Get ya somethin'?"
Gene: "Something that won't put me under the table instantly."
Gutsy: "...Sure!" He mixes a drink known as the Norn Kicker, a special drink that would put a Norn under the table. He places the drink on the bar. "That'll be 10 copper!" He grins.
Gene sneaks a glance at the giant woman standing near her. The hugeness of the norn never cease to amaze her.
Unn: "Make sure that is a Sylvari sized drink dear, NOT a Norn sized one."
Gutsy: "It's small, I swear!"
Gene tosses the man a few coins and takes her drink. She nods to the barkeep. She certainly hopes he is right, as she can't drink much.
Gutsy swipes the coins and grins devilishly.
Ren ducks his head and hurries toward the door, his bag of bottles clinking over his shoulder. As much as he'd love to approach Gene, not today, not now.
Unn: "Be careful with that, pink friend, Gutsy tends to underestimate the strength of his drinks."
Gene turns as she sees Ren leave. She gives only an absentminded nod to the Norn woman, wrapped in her own thoughts.
Gutsy: "Go on, drink up! It's a lil' somethin' special I whipped up at my ol' job in the Reach!"
Gene sighs, giving the norn a look and sipping the beverage. It's incredibly strong. "Treesong, what is in that?" She asks, and immediately can feel its effects, putting one hand on the bar.
Gutsy: "The stuff dreams are made out of!" He laughs.
Gene glares at the norn. "I'll.. b-be back..."
Gutsy: "I'm lookin' forward to it!" He grins.
Gene doesn't know what was in that drink, and all of the sudden she doesn't care. She walks out of the bar, the walk slowly becoming more of a stumble.
Gutsy: "Look, she's gonna chase her girlfriend!" He laughs.
Unn watches the Sylvari weaving towards the exit, and hopes she makes it to her destination safely.
Gene looks around, tired. "Ren? Reeeen..." Why Ren? Who is Ren to her anymore? But she wants to see him.
Unn: "Really Gutsy? That's a little bit low, giving someone that drink when they ask for something weak."
Gutsy: "Bah, they don't know what they want. It's up to me as the barkeep to make sure they get what they need! Which is blackout drunk!"
Unn puts her hands on her hips and gives Mr. Gutsy a dirty look. She smacks him on the back of the head.
Ren leans against the boxes and takes a swig of the bottle of ale. He nearly drops it when Gene calls his name, spilling ale down his front - he peers out and looks at her with wide eyes. "G-Gene?"
Gene smiles, looking in the direction of the voice to see Ren. "Hey! Th-that bartender guy... gave me something funny." She stumbles over. "Makes ya' think, though! About being so aa-angry all the time..." She smiles at Ren, now utterly drunk. "You were never angry, though. I liked that about you..." Feeling weary, she puts her head in her hands and sinks to the ground, leaning against the crate. "Why is everyone so mean..."
Unn walks over to the doorway to see what is happening.
Ren sets his bottle on the crate next to him and squats down in front of Gene, his hands hovering awkwardly just shy of touching her. "Gene - are... are you okay?" He touches her arm gently, ready to lift his hand away if she shows the slightest disinclination to his touch, his expression concerned. He looks up at the pair watching them and blanches a bit.
Gutsy: "What're you doin' over there sweetness?" He munches on some peanuts he took from a patron.
Unn: "People-watching. Making sure that Sylvari you got drunk is still alive. This oaf gave her a very strong drink even though she asked for something light. So I felt responsible for her and wanted to make sure she didn't fall into the fountain."
Gutsy: "Oh, I see!" He offers Unn some nuts.
Unn shuffles to the side to give the pair some privacy.
Gene groans a little bit, not upset at Ren's touch but upset by herself. "No! I'm not okay! I hate Vit and I hate the Grove 'cause it reminds me of you and of Vit and I hate being alone and I like what the Order does but I miss when I was happy, and I just want to go back to the way things were!" She rambles on, completely oblivious to the Norns.
Gutsy whispers to Unn, "So... who's winning?"
Unn whispers back, "The girl appears to be winning at the moment, now hush so I can listen." She tiptoes quietly and crouches near the boxes, her nosy curiosity getting the better of her.
Gutsy whispers, "We can watch a lil' closer if we turn into birds. They won't even notice. Watch! C....caw!"
Unn hisses at Gutsy, "Get down, you idiot!"
Gutsy: "...Worked better in my mind."
Unn: "You are OUT of your mind then, you goof." She shakes her head at Gutsy's absolute cluelessness when it comes to eavesdropping or spying.
Ren looks up at the norn on top of the boxes, feeling a rare twinge of annoyance. Most likely he was just trying to lighten the mood, but... Ren touches Gene's elbow before taking her hand, gently. "I'm sorry, Gene, I... I really am. Maybe, ah, he didn't mean what he said? Not that it excuses him... Ah..." Ren hesitates, unsure of what to say, what to do to ease Gene's sorrow.
Gene shakes her head, hands on her face. "He /meant/ it! Sometimes I'm so angry, I just want to punch him in the had a-and, and..." She groans, examining her fingertips. "I should g-go... I don't want to bother you... I'm seeing weird things... giant bird... norn... people... I should go home..." She almost says home is in the Grove, and she can't go there, but she shakes the thought away and stands.
Unn watches the scene playing out in front of her with fascination. She wonders what the history between the two Sylvari is.
Gutsy plays around on the chandeliers. He falls and sprains his ankle. He whispers, "Sweetness! I hurt my ankle, kiss it and make it better!"
Ren tries on a smile and gives her hand a squeeze. "You aren't seeing things. The Norn are real. And, ah, maybe it would help? To punch him. I mean... If he responds to that sort of thing." He follows her to her feet, taking her other hand to offer her stability. "Where is home? I'll see you there safely."
Unn hisses back, "Shush!! This is getting good, and I'm not putting my mouth anywhere near your feet, you walk on those! Behind a bar no less!"
Gutsy whispers, "...then kiss higher than the feet!" He laughs.
Unn: "HUSH!"
Gutsy zips it. He finds a bowl of moa eggs and gulps them down.
Unn hopes Gutsy isn't too hurt or offended but the drama unfolding in front of her is too interesting to miss.
Gene groans. "I... I don't know. The Grove, but... I... No... The Order..." She shakes her head at him. "I can get there, i-it's alright...."
Gutsy is feelin' fine. He cries.
Unn is torn between apologizing to Gutsy and watching the Sylvari.
Gutsy cries loudly in Unn's general direction.
Unn heaves a sigh and goes back into the bar, hoping Gutsy will quiet down quickly so she can get back to spying.
Gutsy springs up and smooches Unn on the cheek. He laughs, and Unn smiles. "You fell for my trap!"
Unn: "Yes, yes I did, now lemme get back to spying."
Gutsy: "Ok, ok."
Ren shakes his head. Gene can barely stand; he wouldn't be able to forgive himself should something happen to her. "Ah, that's... Gene, I would want to see you safe," he says softly. "Lillica and I staying at the inn up the road. If.. if you like, you could rest there, just for a while."
Unn hears the voices murmuring, and quickly sneaks back out, hoping she hasn't missed too much.
Gutsy slaps Unn's ass as she turns away.
Unn glares at Gusty.
Gene shakes her head. "No... no no, I can't do that... You.. We... I... No, no. I know where I... I can go." She slowly lets go of Ren, and takes a few, careful steps, the alcohol still in her system. She smiles back at Ren, a rare thing for her nowadays. "Don't follow me, o-okay? You... I... You shouldn't be around me anymore." She opens her mouth to continue, but shuts it and wanders off. As a precaution, she makes herself disappear. She can't have Ren follow her, as much as she might wish otherwise.
Unn watches the two Sylvari wistfully, desperately curious as to what has and will happen but also knowing she can't follow them.
Ren lets her pull away, but he leaves his hand held out to her, his brows pushed up in concern. "Gene..." He says, right before she disappears. He stands there, hand out, eyes fixed on the space she'd been standing a moment before; after a long moment, he drops his arm and sighs. Shouldering his bag again, he gives the norn a last glance before plodding away. Lillica is expecting him, after all...
Ren has a few questions, so he tries to hunt down Lillica. He finds Gene instead!
Warnings: None. Follow-up to this RP.
Esrenniel fanned himself absently with a well-handled bundle of papers; between the heat and glaring sunshine, he was feeling faint. With the addition of a good heap of confusion, he was about ready to declare defeat and go home. The woman who had broken his gun had said something about funding, but she hadn't said anything about where to find her, or what to do if he was interested - not that he was certain he was. But his mentor was always telling him to try new things. This was definitely new. He sighed, looking at the tattered contract in his hands.
Geneviette walked up to the banister to view the area better. It wasn't often she got to visit the place - so different than the rest of the world. She wasn't even sure where her contact wanted to meet her, he'd said something about an outpost or something... She nodded to the norn to her right, and proceeded to watch the waves, going over the directions in her head.
Ren glanced over at the figure who approached the banister as he went to fold the contract and tuck it back into his bag. He paused, eyeing her; she looked familiar, but... he ruffled his fingers through the papers and dredged up what courage he had at the moment. "Gene?"
Gene spin, hearing her name, and a feeling of dread ran through her. Ren stood there - she hadn't seen him in... she didn't even know how long. A part of her was glad to see a familiar face, but she repressed her feelings. She gave a curt nod. "Ren." She put her hands behind her back in a half formal, half awkward stance.
Ren, taken aback by the stiff response, offered her an uncertain smile. "I thought it was you, but I wasn't sure! You look, um..." He waved the bundle of papers, now rolled up in his hand. "Very different. Good," he added hastily, "Very good! But I almost didn't recognize you. I suppose it's been a while." He tapped the papers against the back of his other hand,, unsure how to proceed.
Gene nodded along with Ren as he spoke, tilting her head slightly when he tripped over his words. "I look different because I'm an initiate, now." She wondered in the back of her mind how he'd react to the news, but she told herself it didn't matter.
Ren's eyes went a bit wide. "Oh! That would be why I haven't seen you around, then, I suppose. It must be very interesting - it gets you out of the Grove, at least." His emotions were a haphazard mix at the moment; he wanted nothing more than to sweep Gene up in a hug, but he could see that this new Gene might not appreciate that. "That's good. I suppose I can't ask what you're here for, then!"
Gene nodded again. "Yes. This is my first big assignment." Some small, buried part of her wanted to grin, get a drink and tell Ren all about it, but it was too buried in anger and depression. "No, you can't. At least I don't see Vitrun anymore." She was blunt. After a pause, she continued the conversation with a question. "What are you doing here?"
Ren held the roll of papers in front of him, twisted between his hands, as much a shield against Gene's anger as a distraction to keep him from reaching out to try and soothe it. "I, ah... suppose he never apologized then. I'm sorry..." He looked down at the papers. "I was looking for someone. She said she worked for the Consortium, but no one has seen her - it's fine. Probably a bad idea anyway... most of mine seem to be." He sighed. "I was just about to head back to the Grove."
Gene instantly wanted to burst out that none of his ideas were bad - in fact, most were fabulous! But she didn't. She didn't know why she didn't, but she didn't. "I wouldn't give up so easily," was what she said instead. "She could still be around." After a pause, she said, "No, he didn't apologize. I doubt that he's ever apologized before in his life." Her face became a little angry, and a little sad, as it did when she thought of Vitrun now. She shrugged it off quickly.
Lillica Foster had been eyeing Ren for almost half an hour now. She didn't originally intend to wait so long, but something came up. Apparently Ren had someone else he knew here, and the reunion appeared to be bittersweet at best. Luckily, her eavesdropping rewarded Lillica with a tidbit of hope. Not only was she seeking Ren, Ren was searching for her, too. The papers didn't look signed, but that could be remedied easily enough! Lillica stepped from her place behind the bush into full view, approaching her brother and sister of the dream. "I thought I heard my name...?"
Ren jumped as Lillica popped up at his side. He clutched the papers tight. "You! Um." He eyed her nervously. Notably, his rifle is nowhere to be seen. "I couldn't salvage the engine, so, uh..." He grimaced, and glanced over at Gene, oddly ashamed to have her witness this particular failure of his. "They really are very expensive..."
Lillica smiled, "Actually, that's why I'm here. As a show of the Consortium's gratitude towards you for not shredding those papers immediately, I was authorized to give you this." Lillica motioned to her miniature steam rider, which hovered up to Ren's side, stopped, and shut down. "Its core is an aetheromotive engine. Lower quality, but decent enough. Consider it and anything you can salvage from that bad boy to be yours. Just our way of letting you taste the benefits to be had by signing on."
Gene examines the ground for a moment, and then them, listening to the conversation. "I should get on." She said curtly. "I'll see you around, Ren." With that, she walked off, not looking Ren straight in the eyes.
Ren raised a hand to reach out to Gene reflexively, distracted from Lillica for the moment. She was gone before he could reply. "Ah - Gene..." He sighed, then looked down to the steamrider sitting beside him. "Thank you, I suppose. That is very generous of you..." He didn't add that it was the least she could do, being directly responsible for the broken rifle. He waved the roll of papers in his hand. "I, ah, didn't understand most of this. I don't want to sign it unless I do. Would you..." He paused, started over. "Can I trust you to explain this to me?"
Lillica sighed, but took Ren's hand, offering to lead him to a table. "Yes, you can. But if you want me to be thorough, we'd best get comfortable. These aren't meant to be quick reads."
Ren nodded and took the hand she offered. "I understand. Time isn't an issue." Not like there was anything waiting for him at home. Pushing down a wave of sadness, Ren let Lillica lead him away.
Ren just wants to navel-gaze. Lillica wants that SHINY GUN! Eumu is concerned.
Warnings: None. Continued in this RP.
Esrenniel hunches over the sheets of paper spread across the table, but he's not really seeing them; he's balancing a pencil on the tip of his finger, his eyes focused off in the distant la-la land of daydreams where his best friend hasn't up and disappeared and he doesn't feel terrible about it all. He sighs and lets the pencil drop onto the papers below. It punches through, tip-first, right into the tabletop.
Lillica Foster was as curious as ever, and after returning home from her time up in Frostgorge Sound, there seemed to be something fun and new going on with all of her brothers and sisters of the Dream. She looked down from her perch on the ramp at something rather eye-catching, a rifle it seemed, with one end connected to the other by nothing more than some sort of aetheric beam! It looked marvelous to say the least, and soon Lillica found herself adjusting her Grade-B Inventor's goggles to get a better look. Naturally, being one of the curious types, closer observation would have to follow.
Esrenniel's gun, currently leaning against the table by him, is obviously a homemade affair. Despite the attempts to pretty it up, it looks like a work in progress - there's signs that it's blown up and been salvaged at least once, judging by the singed stock and chipped enamel. Ren himself seems to be oblivious to his new admirer. He flips listlessly through the papers on the desk. Picking a sheet that's more crossed-out notes than actual design, he begins to alternately crumple and shred until he has a pile of little paper scraps in front of him.
Lillica Foster's eyes honed in on the rifle's best aspect, its shiniest aspect, its curious aether-bridge between muzzle and stock. Sure, the rest of it looked like a patch job, but so did all of her best stuff, too. Lillica decided against writing it off as unremarkable until she got to play with it a bit. That's where her little array of gadgetry came in. With the flick of a switch, Lillica's steam micro-tech steam rider hummer to life, zipping wide then approaching Esrenniel head on. It watched him, flailed its tentacles, and did little else but serve as a distraction while Lillica extended a hand to poke the rifle.
Esrenniel's reintroduction to reality was with a faceful of tentacles out of literally, actually nowhere. One moment, a pile of paper scraps; the next, a pile of mechanical tentacles scattering papers across the floor as the steam rider leapt onto the table and spun wildly. "Augh!" Ren rocks back off the stool with a cry. One of his knees clips his rifle as he falls, knocking it to the ground with a clatter. It sparks wildly, releases a puff of smoke - and then the bridge flickers out with an anticlimactic sputter. Ren, distracted by an enthusiastic whirlwind of metal, doesn't notice.
Eumu Cota stirs, waking from a short nap because of all the noise, she raises her head off the nearby table in the other room, embarrassingly wiping off the small puddle of drool she left. She looks over at where the noise came from to see the small puff of smoke. She opens her eyes widely then. Realizing there's no fire she stands up and walks over to the two in the other room, yawning slightly. "Are you okay? You seem stressed." She looks at all the paper balls around and on the table.
Esrenniel doesn't answer, because he's on the floor, arms up over his head and obviously cowering away from what amounts to a toy.
Lillica Foster put a finger to her lips, shaking her head in the classic "Shush!" gesture. Luckily, her steamrider still had Ren entranced, still had him looking the other way as she swiped his rifle! Lillica quickly tripped over some debris as she tried to make a quick getaway.
Eumu Cota watches as Esrenniel cowers from the small steam rider and as Lil takes the rifle, she assumes it's hers and pays no mind to it as she walks to the cowering engie and pats him on the back, not understanding what he's cowering from. "What's wrong?" she looks at the small floating metal thing near him and pushes it away.
Esrenniel is yelling continuously at this point, his hands over his head and papers fluttering to the ground around him. "What is that thing?" As he looks over to the newcomer, he can't help but notice the spot where his rifle should be, the result of many hours of hard work and singed fingers, is conspicuously empty. He looks around frantically -- it's only a moment before he sees the other sylvari on the ground, rubbing her knee with one hand and clutching his rifle in the other. "HEY!" As he jumps to his feet, he slips on a sheet of paper and slams into the petite sylvari who tried to help him.
Lillica Foster realized she'd been spotted. It was pretty obvious the operation didn't go as planned. But these things happen when given little time to plan and something so goshdarh shiny right in one's reach... Still, Lillica was a quick thinker. It was the key to her success as a salvager, and a boon to her career in reverse engineering. She'd already devised another plan! Lillica spun around, smiling, eyes wide, and face brimming with charisma as she flashed her honorary Consortium membership badge. "You there!" Lillica stuck a finger straight at the fuzzy Esrenniel. "Now that I have your attention, on behalf of the Consortium, I'd like to make a proposal!"
Eumu Cota halfway catches Ren as he falls back onto her, knocking them both down and breaking Ren's fall. "H-hey! Ow..." She rubs her back slightly as she looks at the sylvari flashing her badge. She slides out from behind Ren and stands up, looking at Lil. "You're a member of the Consortium? you have to tell me what they are like!" She smiles enthusiastically as she completely ignores the rifle and Ren.
Esrenniel climbs unsteadily to his feet, slipping on papers several times before he gives up and kicks them out of the way rather than try to spare them. "Give me that back!" He huffs, his cheeks dark with embarrassment and anger. He points at the steamrider. "Is that /yours?/ Were you trying to steal my rifle?" He notices the lack of sparking energy and grabs at the short spikes of his hair. "No! Oooh, no, not again, what did you do!"
Lillica Foster's eyes shift left to right as Esrenniel begins his rant. "It's really not as bad as you'd think," she whispers to Eumu, "They give a lot of funding to research and exploration!" She turns back to Esrenniel, answering proudly that, "Yes, it is mine! I built it myself based on Scarlet's steam watchers. As you can see I didn't really capture it all, but I'm proud of even this much."
Esrenniel does an agitated little dance on the spot; he finally actually looks at Lil rather than staring at the rifle. "Nooo, no, no, the galvanic rotors have burnt out again! Give it to me! Please?!" He claps his hands together in supplication, then holds them out, palms up, driven by the thought of his all his hard work going up in smoke. "Please, give me the rifle. It is really, very incredibly pressing, because if the rotors have burnt out, and if the aetheromotive engine has not, which is doesn't, it's a little tank, then. Give me the rifle!" He takes a step towards Lil.
Lillica Foster stepped up to Esrenniel, handing him both the rifle and a small packet of paperwork. "Fine, but do look over this. I think you'll like what you see." She whispered, "You might notice the details on Consortium funding, bottom of page five... It's fairly generous."
Eumu Cota looks at the two of them and at the rifle, then at the steam creature. "You both built all that?" She blinks, staring at them. "That's incredible! She sits down at the table, watching Ren work on his rifle."
Esrenniel ignores the packet completely. It flutters to the ground while he digs a screwdriver out and makes short work of stripping the rifle; he squats down on the floor with the now-sputtering forestock, sparks singing his fingers as he frantically scrabbles at the screws holding in a wobbling engine. Before he can get it out, it explodes dramatically, bouncing out of the gun in a shower of glittering sparks and splinters. It whizzes by Lil's ear and embeds itself in the far wall. Ren lets out a wail and rests his forehead on the shattered forestock.
Lillica Foster: A little nozzle pops up from Lillica's shoulder pad, spraying down the sparks and embers behind her before retreating back into its casing.
Eumu Cota takes cover behind the table as the rifle explodes. "T-that could have hit one of us." She peeks up at the two just standing still, "I-it won't do that again, will it?" She stammers, staring at the scrap metal that used to be a rifle.
Esrenniel shakes his head against the rifle, then jumps, sitting up and picking a splinter out of his brow. "No. It only has the one engine. The one.... very, very expensive engine..." He heaves a sigh; it looks like he might cry amidst the scattered papers and rifle parts.
Lillica Foster slides up beside him, putting an arm on his shoulder, "Now now, it's not so bad! you can fix it, rightttt? All you need is a little more gold and time, riiiightttt?" Her steam rider hums over, carrying the packet of documents beneath it. The contraption halts by Ren's feet. Lillica whispers, "There there, we can fix it! Together! Come on, just sign here, here, and here..."
Eumu Cota shoots a scowl at Lil. "I don't think he's in the mood to join." She walks to Ren and pats his back. "D-don't worry! I'm sure you can fix it. You've already built one and now you can make another that's... less explode-y." She smiles as she wipes some debris off of him.
Lillica Foster's steamrider attempts to drag Eumu away, possibly by Lillica's command.
Esrenniel pushes the steamrider away, ignoring the packet of papers again as he climbs to his feet and wipes the tears off his face. "I don't even know what the Consortium is," he mutters. He looks down the shattered rifle and addresses Eumu, "I can rebuild it if I can get lucky enough to find another working aetheromotive engine without joining the Aetherblades. I'll..." He scratches his head and eyeballs the hole in the wall. "I wonder if I could salvage the engine, or if it would be too unstable after the impact..." He snaps back to reality and eyeballs Lil, taking a step away from her. "I don't want to join someone who assaulted me and attempted to steal from me."
Lillica Foster sighed, "For the record, I never assaulted you! And I'll be leaving the papers here anyways. You can send a bird if you change your mind." She swaggered out of the room, leaves blazing and hips swaying and junk.
Esrenniel stares around at the wreckage of his previously peaceful evening. He wipes away another tear before heading to the hole the engine punched in the wall. Perhaps he could salvage it after all...
Gene and Ren, being similarly babies, sit down and chat for a bit. Vit doesn’t like Ren too much. Takes place before (and sets up) this roleplay.
Warnings: BAD IDEAS.
Geneviette walks up to the table where Ren and Vitrun are sitting. Still semi-angry at Vitrun, she smile at Ren, ignoring Vitrun completely. "Whatcha working on?" She looks at the papers spread on the table.
Esrenniel looks up at the sound of Gene's voice and gives her a grin, laying aside his pencil so he can turn the paper to show her. "A new turret. My current net turret works properly, but I'm hoping to improve upon it."
Geneviette picks up the paper. She doesn't understand much of what's written on the parchment, but it looks very different than what she's seen. "What are you adding? Or fixing?"
Esrenniel points to an incomprehensible jumble of lines and messily-sketched notes along one side of the paper. "A new way of loading the nets - I'd like to be able to add heavier weights, to more effectively bring down targets, but my current turret has very limited space available. No sense automating it if it can only shoot twice, in my opinion."
Geneviette smiles up at Ren, partially trying to read the notes. "I don't know how much I'd understand of this, but it sounds exciting!" She grins. "Much success?" She glances sideways at Vitrun a moment.
Esrenniel sighs and flips through a small pile of discarded diagrams. "Not yet... admittedly, I've only built one! and it didn't blow up, which I count as a success of a sort." He glances over at Vitrun, then back at Gene, raising a brow at her in confusion.
Geneviette grimaces; she'd hoped he hadn't noticed. She shakes her head slightly at Ren. She wasn't going to be the first to talk to him. 'Don't worry about it,' she mouthed. She grins again. "I can't wait to see them! How come you haven't made more yet, if they first one worked?"
Esrenniel looks between the two again, but continues to flip through the papers. "Oh, I... never said it worked." He laughs, embarrassed. "Just didn't blow up, you see, which is a good sign. There was a bit of difficulty with the firing... the first net didn't separate from the second, the second brought the third with it... And, uh. I may have underestimated how far the net would be thrown. The nets. Many nets." He sighs and straightens the papers in front of him; he's blushing a bit.
Geneviette laughs good naturedly, smiling at the blush. "Don't worry! You'll get it eventually! If I can be of service, please, let me know! I don't know what help a mesmer could be, but you never know!"
Vitrun crosses his arms and gives the young engineer a judging look. "Have you considered finding a more experienced engineer to study under? You wouldn't want to be responsible for a device that eventually blows up and harms some innocent Sylvari?" He sighs.
Esrenniel blushes darker. "I don't want to learn how to build things the way someone else does it," he says, "I want to learn to build them myself. I've seen other schematics. I've built stable, functional turrets. I would like to improve upon them, if I can. It isn't like I test them in the Grove." He shuffles the papers. "...Anymore."
Geneviette chuckles, not looking at Vitrun. "Did the Wardens give you trouble? You can always test them in Caledon Forest."
Esrenniel shakes his head. "No, but some stranger was very emphatic about being careful. I test just outside of Astorea now." He frowns down at the table. "That man was very rude. But," he looks up at Gene, "I don't believe I would be comfortable having someone around while testing a turret. Misfires can happen."
Geneviette laughs, smiling at Ren. "I'm sure most can understand that!"
Esrenniel returns the smile bashfully. "I would feel very bad if you were to be hurt during one of the tests. Perhaps you could drop by after I've worked out the worst of the kinks?"
Geneviette smiles. "Sure. But I wouldn't mind staying. I could help! This looks interesting." She raises her hands slightly. "'Course, if you want me to go so you can work, that's fine too. Either way, I'd love to see the finished product." She grins.
Esrenniel goes dark across his cheeks again. He ruffles the papers. "You can stay for this part - I'm not certain you could help much, but I wouldn't mind the company! Turrets aren't very conversational."
Geneviette laughs. "That should be your next project! A talking turret. It could laugh at your enemies! You could pre-program it with insults! Oh, that wouldn't be very nice, but..."
Esrenniel bites his lip; it looks like he's seriously considering the prospect. "I wonder how..." He taps the pencil on the table. "I can't think of any practical way to shoot laughter at someone. Sound is difficult to control... Oh." He drops the pencil and gives Gene an awkward smile. "Was that a joke?"
Geneviette laughs again, grinning. "Yes, but I'm sure you could figure out a way to do it! What if you could narrow down sound or laughter, in this case, into a thin beam?" She shakes her head, blushing and looking at the ground. "That's stupid, right?"
Esrenniel shakes his head. "No, no! I believe theoretically it's possible. The mechanical aspects are the hang-up. You would need some way to funnel the sound, but..." He props his chin in his hand and stares down at the papers before him, a crease between his brows. "I don't know enough about the properties of sound waves to know where to start..."
Geneviette looks up at Ren and smiles. "Well, maybe we could figure it out, but I really shouldn't draw your attention from the net turret. What's your next step there?" She examines the papers.
Esrenniel reaches out for the paper nearest to Gene, the most recent diagram he's drawn. "My next step," he says, pulling the paper towards him and turning it around to scrutinize it, "would be to sort out why the nets, which are self-contained packages before being fired, came undone inside the machine. Most likely it's related to the excessive force - if the nets were too tightly wrapped, they wouldn't come undone in the air, and..." He shrugs. "A ball of flying rocks wrapped with netting would hurt, but wouldn't tangle you up very much. They must have come unwrapped inside the turret when it fired."
Geneviette ponders for a moment. "Maybe it was whatever the fabric was holding the nets? Have you tried using a different kind? Or if it is the force... Maybe you could put less pressure on them? Put less stacked on top?" Gene blushes, not knowing if she sounds stupid or not. "I don't know..." She sifts through some of the pages some more.
Esrenniel gives Gene a small smile. "I do appreciate it, but you aren't required to help me with this," he says. "I know this isn't everyone's field of interest. I find it very interesting - I could discuss the benefits of different bearing types all day. But if you like, I can set this all aside and we can discuss something more relevant to you." He shrugs. "Turret designs will wait for me to return."
Geneviette chuckles. "Well.. perhaps we could find common ground? I haven't gotten the chance to know you very well. What are you interested in? Other than turrets, I suppose. Any Wyld Hunts? Secret lovers?" Gene smiles and takes a seat at the table.
Esrenniel 's expression goes blank for a moment, his cheeks darkening, and he looks away from Gene. "Well, um. Ha. To be honest, I've been so busy working with machines, I haven't taken much time to explore much else... I did visit Rata Sum the other week," he says, obviously flailing. "It was very interesting!"
Geneviette smiles at him. "What did you see? Were the asura any trouble? I hear some of them want to use us for test subjects. I've met a few friendly ones, though."
Esrenniel purses his lips. "Not much trouble... Although, I tried to get into the Archives to view a few schematics I was interested in, and the guard was very rude. Non-Asura are not allowed to view the Archives, apparently. He wasn't even nice about turning me away."
Geneviette frowns. "Well that's terrible! Knowledge should be spread! I wish I could think of a way to get them to tell you about it..."
Esrenniel perks up, his eyes wide. "Aren't you a mesmer? Are you any good at disguises? If you could disguise me, I could sneak in!"
Geneviette grins. "Hey, yeah! I bet I could! I've never tried an asura spell before..." Suddenly Gene's in deep thought. "I wonder if I spread the spell out with a..." Her voice falls away, but she becomes aware of Ren again and blushes. "Sorry. Turrets are your thing, spells and illusions are mine. But I bet I could do it!"
Esrenniel waves her apology away with a grin. "I understand. Believe me, I do. When would you want to try? I expect you'll want to practice before we do - would it help to have someone to practice on other than yourself? I volunteer." He lifts his hand.
Geneviette laughs. "Yeah, it'd help! I'll have to figure out the spell, though..." She drifts off into thought.
Esrenniel nods. "You do that. In the meantime -" he taps the papers in front of him - "I will work on this. I believe I need to run, though," he continues, shamefaced. "I was supposed to meet my mentor and I admit, I forgot."
Geneviette chuckles. "I'm sorry to have distracted you, but I'll get to work on this as soon as possible!" She mutters something about the dynamics of an Asura spell.
Esrenniel scoops up the papers on the table and rolls them into a sloppy bundle; he gives Gene a wave and dashes off towards the entrance.
Geneviette laughs as Ren runs off, waving goodbye.
