The Visitors by Ragnar Kjartansson

The Visitors was produced in 2012 and it was displayed as a large installation composed by nine projections on screen on 1:1 scale. This work of art combines music, performance, poetry and cinema and the way it was installed (in a huge room at Hanger Bicocca in Milan), allowed the viewers to enter a magical and carrying atmosphere. The videos shown various musicians, mainly friends of the artist, who, for more than an hour, played each a different instrument while singing the same song: Feminine Ways. This song was inspired by a poetry written for Kjartansson by his ex-wife. The audio and the videos were recorded separately and then mounted together. The scenes are set in nine rooms (the library, the kitchen, the bathroom, the office, the bedroom and the porch) of the huge and run-down mansion of the nineteenth century immerse in the New York countryside. The entire staging was designed by the artist himself who has been really careful in organising the set as to underline the visual and sonorous elements for the audience. The whole installation aim to be a reflection on some personal themes, such as the strength and the romance of emotional bonds with a hint of melancholy typical of the nordic culture where the artist comes from. Kjartansson was born in Iceland where he studied art and where he currently lives and works. He often creates performances which involve more disciplines and through which he challenges the balance between reality and imagination.
