The Establishing Image

The establishing image is vital to the introduction of the photo story. It’s the first image that magazines and newspapers will use to introduce the reader to the feature article. It may be a wide, it may be an observed portrait. It might contain many people or a single person or even none at all. However, its singular importance is to illustrate the pages that proceed it to introduce a story, so therefore, it MUST contain INFORMATION.

For this assignment, I have three topic briefs to photograph; Community; Isolation; and Urban Regeneration. I have the Christmas holidays and a couple weeks once I am back at uni to complete these shoots. The Christmas season will provide good ideas for the ‘community’ shoot, as there will be various events and festivals on within cities and towns.

These photographs were also shot for the establishing image. This title was community, and I chose to do a community of scooter and bike riders. At first glance it looked like I had walked onto the set of some kind of 'This is England' film meets 'Quadrophenia' On this particular day (remembrance sunday)  they all met at Regents Park and waited for each gang to arrive. I was lucky enough to ride on the back of a Lambretta and shoot on the go. Once everyone was there we took over the streets of London, purposely driving slow and blocking up each lane so that even if any onlooker hadn't already stopped to stare. They did. The fumes were disgusting and finding your way through the smoke cloud wasn't much fun either. It wasn't until we had just turned our engines on after a two minute silence-organised and carried out by one of the riders was over and once again each driver roared up their engine that I got the whole community side to the men and women, and began to understand their world. We had just turned off of Oxford street and no rider would go too far without another, not wanting to leave anyone behind. They were driving so close your knees brushed driving past, but the upmost respect was kept at all times through out the day and a level of peace and remembrance was felt.
